Humanoid Ideas and Changes (updated 5/15/2024)

As one of the few players who still care about pet battling, I feel nothing but boredom and disappointment as none of the new pets or even most of the old pets are any good, so I am on a journey to redesign as many battle pets as I could to hopefully prove pet battling could be revived under my leadership in the future assuming Blizzard hires me. Many new abilities, balance changes, and most importantly: many new pets! This list will be very long, unsurprisingly!

Once I release all of the other threads, then I will only list the humanoid specific abilities and balance changes and vice versa. I knew this would be too much to read. My apologies.

New Abilities:

  • Ambush and Tiger Palm deal additional damage if the user goes first.
  • A second version of Acid Rain (labelled by *) with polluted green visuals and is the opposite of Cleansing Rain (duration of damage over time effects raised by 1 round).
  • Arcane Familiar summons an arcane elemental (like Raise Ally).
  • Ascend to the Heavens and False Surrender are similar to Deliberate Retreat.
  • Assassinate is an evade and ambush ability.
  • Battle Cry/Murgl Gurgl is a team damage/damage buff to the user.
  • Beast versions of Sniff Out and Powerball.
  • Best Frenzies is the aquatic version of Stampede.
  • Bone Breaker is similar but stronger than Jar of Smelly Liquid (see balance change) with a 2 round cooldown.
  • Chilling Winds is similar to Scorched Earth, but chilly as the name suggests and all pets are chilled instead of burning.
  • Confetti, Parry, Taunt and Void Slip are similar to Deflection.
  • List item
  • Eye for an Eye is similar to the new Dark Fate.
  • Eye Gouge hits hard and blinds the enemy for 1 round.
  • Feral Clawing, Feral Scratching, Rabid Clawing, and Fists of Fury hit 4 times and each would also have a stronger version with a 1 round cooldown.
  • Frost Fever is the dragonkin equivalent of Deep Freeze.
  • Greed (50% critical strike chance for 5 rounds) and Lucky Coin (team 50% accuracy and 25% critical strike chance for 4 rounds) are split from Need Before Greed (removed).
  • Holy Light is the humanoid equivalent of Sunlight.
  • Holy Radiance and Rays of Holy Light are both team heals (latter is similar to Rays of Light which damages the enemy team, but the former has higher healing).
  • Jade pallete swaps of Wild Winds, Slicing Wind, Gust of Wind, Whirling Winds, and Cyclone.
  • Leg Sweep is a stronger interrupt with a 4 round cooldown.
  • Light’s Blessing is similar to Ancient Blessing and Ancient Knowledge.
  • Looming Fog heals the user’s team and changes the weather to Fog, during which healing is raised by 25%, but the accuracy is lowered by 10%.
  • Ox Charge and Shield Charge always goes first.
  • Party Time is a team speed buff.
  • Quell is a weaker interrupt with only a 2 round cooldown.
  • Riposte deals additional damage if the user is struck first.
  • Rotten Egg damages and has a 50% chance to blind the enemy by 50% for 1 round with a 1 round cooldown.
  • Shining Light is a heal over time.
  • Spinning Crane Kick is similar to Whirlwind.
  • Sugar Rush heals and grants a 25% speed buff for 3 rounds.
  • Summon Demon is the same as Raise Ally but summons an imp instead.
  • Sweeping Blow and Flying Serpent Kick deal split AOE damage.
  • Temper Tantrum similar to Rampage.
  • Void Gaze slows down the enemy team for 9 rounds.
  • Void Storm is the void variant of Arcane Storm.
  • Void Tendrils summons a void tentacle (like Raise Ally).
  • Weaker version of Body Slam with no cooldown and a stronger version of Feral Strike with a 1 round cooldown.
  • Whip Splash hits hard but always stuns the user.

Balance Changes:

  • Aged Yolk, Whole Wheat and Sear Magic now heal, but the cooldown is raised to 4 rounds.

  • Return to Sender and Snail Mail changed to humanoid to match other mail abilities.

Some entries are still unfinished, so I may need help filling in the blanks. Constructive criticism is helpful. Granted, some pets do have extra abilities for good reason: some movesets would feel incomplete (Rascal-Bot would lose Armageddon otherwise). Also a great way to include more underused abilities I want.

I have only read half of the article, but I still want to leave a reply. Undoubtedly, some abilities are dogshlt, such as Plant, Void Portal, and Uncertainty, and they should be removed. Some pets are dogshlt, because they have many identical twins, they should be changed.

But besides that, other pets and abilities should be kept, why delete or change them? What I mean is, we should get more things instead of taking away we current have.

Yes, balancing is hard. I knew these abilities are some of the worst in the game, so I had to either remove or rework: I chose the latter. Sure, not everyone would agree with these changes, but those changes were made for the new movesets to be ideal. Thankfully, my skills have improved these past few months, so you could maybe count on me (or not). I sometimes forget to list some of the new abilities and balance changes I had in mind, so I will continue to update.

Some pets are perfect now you dont have to change them. Some pets are shlt you can change them casually because it wont become wrose. Some changes are meaningless and i cant understand the intention.

Father Winter’s Helper/Winter’s Little Helper: Snowball/Magic Bauble, Call of Winter/Winter Spirit/Eggnog, Ice Tomb/Gift of Winter’s Veil
Call of Winter is useless compare to Bliizzard, Ice Lance is core ability, do you want to nerf this pet? He isnt Meta pet so you don’t have to nerf him.
Rotten Little Helper: Club/Blitz, Ticking Present/Booby-Trapped Presents/Jar of Smelly Liquid, Grinch’s Gift/Overhead Bash/Clobber
Same with Father Winter’s Helper , Why take Ice Tomb and Ice Lance away? This is the strongest pet of Humanoid, if you nerf this pet, What else can Humanoid rely on.
Crusher: Claw/Poison Spit, Shell Shield/Toxic Bite, Poison Protocol/Terrifying Toxicity
This pet is good at directly damage, you make it become a sheer Dot pet, make a new Dot pet is more directly.
Fiendish Imp: Scratch/Flurry, Wild Magic/Healing Flame, Feral Scratching/Ashes of Outland
Rebellious Imp: Fel Breath/Flurry, Wild Magic/Healing Flame, Fel Corruption/Rot
Miscellaneous:
Portal and Nether Gate is important for these Imp. You change completely eliminated its characteristic.
Anubisath Idol: Crush/Stone Shot, Stoneskin/Sandstorm, Body Slam/Rupture
Deflection is important for this pet.
C’uddly: Void Bolt/Void Torrent, Void Slip/Weakness, Void Storm/Lullaby
This pet is perfect now ,you needn’t change it .
Cursed Dune Watcher: Crush/Sand Bolt, Stoneskin/Sandstorm, Body Slam/Quicksand
This is Meta pet, you change make it much more stronger.
Flayer Youngling: Swipe/Rend, Deflection/Focus, Great Swipe/Impale
You shouldn’t take away Kick.
Kun-Lai Runt: Smash/Snowball, Roar/Call of Winter, Rampage/Deep Freeze
Frost Shock is important, you change make this pet similar to Tiny Snowman.
Lightless Tormentor: Empowering Strikes/Cleave, Deflection/Ironskin, Unholy Charge/Great Cleave
This pet is pefect now, it good at Guerrilla warfare, not AOE. We already have Gilded Darknight who is good at AOE.
Squirky: Fish Slap/Furious Splashing, Cleansing Rain/For Adventure, Best Frenzies/Fish Bone
Stampede is important for Humanoid.
Zanj’ir Poker: Water Slash/Frost Breath, Cleansing Rain/Healing Wrap, Whirlpool/Frost Fever
Your changes have turned it from ordinary to useless.
Ranishu Runt: Woodchipper/Lightning Bolt, Shell Shield/Lightning Shield, Feast/Paralyzing Shock
This is the only Humanoid pet with Lightning Storm, it is perfect now.
Wyrmy Tunkins: Punch/Blitz, Frenzy/Jar of Smelly Liquid, Face Punch/Chum/Fish Bone
This pet is perfect now. It need Nether Gate.

There are better ways to apply for a job than the forums but I wish you well, maybe you’ll get your dream job.

I think deleting the spells is a bad idea; we get six and choose three with combinations in mind. Part of the fun is trying things out (if our Q time was quicker).

If I were King of the World and everyone is glad that I am not – I’d get rid of Sandstorm because I hate it and I’d break every single addon used in pet battling. Knowing your opponent’s choices and their spell cooldown is wrong and cheating, you don’t KNOW if they have an addon so it is unfair.

I don’t understand pretty much anything about these posts.

I would like to see more emphasis on actual pet battling. But

a) the devs aren’t interested and
b) most players, including pet collectors and battlers, aren’t interested, so the devs are not facing much demand.

When you talk about reviving pet battling in these threads, I presume you mean PvP? PvE, in the form of scripted battles against tamers, is doing fine. It’s not interesting, unless you make your own strats, but it is keeping players engaged.

When it comes to balance, I have to believe it is possible to do for 1700+ species, but would require a truckload of spreadsheets and a pretty crazy amount of compute time on simulations. You are just listing what seems to me to be pretty random-ish changes, with no numbers or Damage Per Round breakdowns or analysis of alternate dominant strategies, like Avoidance vs Cleave (which is a tough one - the devs have never really got that one right).

But while balance and the degenerate gameplay that occurs in the meta is an issue for PvP, I have never believed it is the one and only obstacle to the success of PvP; the actual structure bears a lot of weight here as well.

And I really don’t understand the extra abilities. I see you say that “some movesets would feel incomplete”, but that’s the choice a designer would have to make, unless you are proposing an extra option per slot?

Also, you can remove Deflection from the Idol over my dead body! :stuck_out_tongue:

Alright, I knew what I was expecting. I knew this thread in particular would be the most contentious as humanoids are the most popular by far. I knew criticism would be inevitable. Kind of a lose-lose, but I know I can’t please everyone. I only started this journey because I wanted pet battling to be fun and interesting again. Despite feeling alone in this opinion, I never gave up hope. Whether or not all of this time and effort would eventually pay off, only time will tell.
