Yeah and molding retail in the direction that it is going lately bleeds hardcore fans that have been with the game for years. There is a trend if you haven’t noticed: less and less people play the game with each new expansion. Ever wondered why?
How about we not turn this into another classic thread? As I’ve already said, the things I’ve mentioned were present well after classic.
On the flip side people also complained heavily that the amount of effort to catchup to your friends if you join mid expansion was ridiculous, since it requires weeks of vets running obsolete content to get their buddy up to speed before they could raid in the current content. Having that come back would completely destroy anyone’s hopes of returning mid expansion and/or swapping mains mid expansion.
Well in that case Classic is gonna offer that model for you to enjoy, so I would suggest giving that a spin.
They’re going to lose players no matter what. The question now becomes, which version of the game is most fun? That question will be answered in the coming weeks.
I was in the stress test beta for vanilla. So to say I’ve been there done that, is no understatement. So I’m not really interested in classic. It has no future to me. It’s static.
I would like to see retail return to a more pure form of progress, without all of the extra stuff they’ve tacked on in the last 2 expansions.
Grinding AP is not fun.
This list is not “basics”. It is a long list of pet peeves that the op shares with many people, and his opinion as to how to remedy those.
Let’s get way more basic.
The game should be fun to play, fun enough so you don’t mind that you know videogames are pretty much a brainless waste of time.
It should feel rewarding. Everything you do in game should feel rewarding.
You should feel that everything you do matters to the character or characters you choose to play.
Things like that.
I agree with you, there’s a bit too much fluff and some of it isn’t fun. Best to keep things simple like they were in classic, but that doesn’t necessarily mean going back to a game that is exactly like classic. I think something in between can work well for everyone.
Well that’s why I mentioned very specific things. There’s plenty of other stuff that I completely left out, because I don’t have a problem with them. Like dailies, or rep grinds, or multiple raid difficulties.
Green gear in TBC was better than raid gear from classic. 90% of the game became irrelevant.
Going into a new expansion, I think that’s something to be expected. From patch to patch?
No.
If there was a way to do what OP suggests while not locking out alts completely, I’d be for it. As my available raiding time has waned over the years, I prioritize being able to try new things in the game. A system that didn’t artificially inflate gear (i.e., Titanforging) while giving alts a quick ramp-up time (more closely tie catch-up mechanics available to alts to things you’ve already cleared on your main) would be fabulous.
Unfortunately, one of the subsets of the WoW population is a very vocal group of people who think I owe it to them to mindlessly grind stuff just to prove I don’t have to kiss their rings. That’s basically hazing behavior manifesting as video game design (“I got my butt whipped, therefore I have the right to whip your butt now”).
Give me a way to experience content the way I’d like to, and I’m more apt to support you in experiencing it the way you want to.
I can’t find anything in your post that I disagree with.
Personally, my biggest gripes with current WoW is the lack of vendors and other character customization based on what Blizzard blames is player ignorance.
Why no PvP vendors? Because players couldn’t find them. Which is an incredibly laughable excuse. Same for Reforging, too complicated for us apparently.
No it will be answered in the coming months. No looking just at results that are based on hyped.
Fair point, can’t argue that.
I can probably get behind you on most things listed
Ever era of this game has had catch up mechanics they are in no way going away
This one I like. I always loved hitting max level on an alt and then hitting up the AH to buy the latest set of blue PvP gear to get started. It was a decent catch up mechanic, not too powerful but it gave you a solid start and it made professions relevant for the whole xpac.
i have 445 mythic boots that are worse than 415 benthic non socketed boots and my 435 socketed boots are better than the 445
I only disagree with number 7 - I like catch-up mechanics because they let me class-swap mid-expansion for whatever reason without needing a ton of work and backtracking. The problem with BFA is that “catch up mechanics” are literally happening in the middle of raid tiers, which is pretty absurd. (Along with gear inflation and other things.) Moderate catch-up at the start of a new tier so you can pick up your tank toon with only a mild time investment required to help your guild? I’d like that to remain tbh.
should mean Reforging.
