I think I have a low FPS for the computer I bought

Good morning! I hope you’re all well. I’m coming to you because I don’t have anyone else to ask or who can give me proper advice. I bought a new computer thinking I’d have too much FPS, and the truth is, in some cases it drops quite a bit. I’d like your opinion on this, and if it’s normal, especially since I bought a new monitor, which hasn’t arrived yet, but the idea would be to play in 2K. Here are my computer specs:

Motherboard: Asrock X870 PRO RS WIFI DDR5 AM5
Graphic: ASUS TUF GeForce RTX 5070 Ti 16GB GDDR7 Gaming OC
Processor: AMD Ryzen 9 9950X3D 5.7GHz Turbo AM5
Memory: G.Skill DDR5 32GB (2x16GB) 8000MHz TRIDENT Z5

I have the FPS capped at a maximum of 120, but in the main city, it usually drops to 60fps. When I get to everyone else, it settles down to around 100, but it freezes, and I thought it was going to be smooth, meaning a constant 120fps. Also, in a BG, Wintergrasp, when there were a lot of characters, with tanks, it dropped to around 70fps.

Anyway, is this normal or am I doing something wrong?

The drivers are all up to date.

Freezing is abnormal. Can you provide more info on what you mean by freezing and situation?

FPS dropping in WoW is normal especially in populated areas. Since we aren’t able to observe the situation 60-70fps can be good.

I heard that the 9950X3D only has the extra cache on half the cores.

it’s a dual chiplet (or more specific CCD) with only one CCD having access to the X3D cache and relying on gaming optimization to properly use the correct CCD. Swifty (member on the forum) has one. Regardless, single or dual CCD, X3D cache or not, the game should not be “freezing” on the OP

so your hardware can’t fix upstream issues, only downstream. It really depends on your server, time of day, ISP, number of other players but expect impacts to your FPS when it seems like all those things are in high use.

The game should not freeze at all. That would be a concerning issue

You may want to run some various benchmarks to 1) make sure your hardware is performing up to the levels they should 2) see if you can recreate this “freeze”

This is part of your issue. However not all of it. It’s also not the major issue. I am on the 9950x3D myself and unfortunately World of Warcraft does NOT get pushed to the CCD0 (cache) CCD like it should. It loads on CCD1 (the frequency CCD) by default. This is why your FPS is so low

This will literally tank your FPS not to mention cross CCD latency on top of that. Luckily for you there is a solution and it’s called Process Lasso. You 100% need this application on the 9950X3D.

The 9900x3D is a workstation/gaming CPU. It’s also 100% NOT on upgrade over the 9800x3D. The 9950x3D is a workstation CPU that you can game on. If you are still in your return window and all you do is game I would 100% return that CPU for the 9800x3D.

If on the other hand you do both workstation task and gaming and are willing to learn how to use process lasso then 100% stick with the 9950X3D. But on the 9950X3D you have you will 100% need Process Lasso to force World of Warcraft to run on CCD0 (cache CCD) and that CCD only. If you do not do this you will continue playing WoW on CCD1 (frequency CCD) and at that point you literally have no reason to even own the 9950X3D over the cheaper 9950x because you are not even using the x3D part of the CPU

The reason you do not run into any of this on the 9800x3D is because it’s a single CCD chip. That single x3D CCD is the only CCD anything can run on

World of Warcraft freezes when it jumps from the cache CCD to the frequency CCD. The game does not stay on one CCD it keeps switching between the two. It also doesn’t spread the game over both CCD. It only stays on one CCD at a time and this is what’s causing the freezing. It’s basically a micro stutter that happens each time it switches CCDs and everything I just explained above is the only solution while on the 9950X3D.

I wish stupid retailers would stop advertising the 9950X3D as an upgrade over the 9800x3D. Because it’s NOT. It’s for a different use case that’s it. The people that need the 9950X3D know they need it and know why they need it. They are also normally more advanced users that are familiar with Process Lasso.

The op has three options. Stay on that CPU and learn process lasso, return the CPU for the 9800x3D or return it for the 9950x if you don’t want to learn process lasso

If you want to learn process lasso it’s actually quite simple OP. Quote me here and I will give you the steps for what you need to do

micro stutter 100% I get and would expect but “freeze” to me means nothing is moving for a couple of seconds. Hopefully it’s the former and not the latter for the OP.

Two reasons it happens 1) higher profit on the 9950X3D system. 2) general public gets fixated on cores rather than performance but like we stated on the 9950X3D launch, the marketing towards gaming is inaccurate.

The microstutter last for a Split Second in World of Warcraft when it switches between the cache CCD and the frequency CCD. The reason it’s so large is because one of the ccds has an incredibly large cache wow is currently utilizing and when it switches to CCD1 that large cache goes away. The micro stutter is much more brief when it switches from the frequency CCD to the cache CCD

Because it’s actually swapping ccds and not loading across them it makes the micro stutter much more prevalent.

World of Warcraft and Guild Wars 2 are so far the only two games I have seen have this issue on the 9950X3D. Most other games load onto CCD0 and Park CCD1 just as they are supposed to. With that said like I said in my post above if all you are doing is gaming why even get the 9950X3D because you are only using 8 cores of it. You might as well just get the 9800x3D

  1. The new computer I bought was the best I could get, and the money I could afford. Regarding the processor, I was told AMD was better for gaming, and I saw that this one in particular was very good for WoW. Apparently, it’s not so good. Anyway, the point is, I already bought it, I can’t return it, so I’ll have to talk to the person who recommended using a program and get them to explain the steps to follow.
  2. I’m from Argentina, and I don’t know much English, so I’m using Google Translate, but from what you answered, I made myself understandable.
  3. Regarding WoW’s performance, it’s not that the screen freezes, but when I enter the main city, Dornogal, or whatever its name is in English. I’ve been getting normal 200fps, and when I get to the center where there are people, it suddenly drops to 50/60/70fps, and then goes back up a bit, never exceeding 100fps. The same thing happens to me with big games, when there are a lot of people (40v40), with more tanks, powers, and so on. I thought this machine would be redundant, even in those cases, which is why I had this doubt.
  4. Could it be that with the new 2k monitor I’m getting, my FPS will drop even more?

What I meant was that I get abrupt drops from 200fps to 60/70fps in the main city when there are a lot of people, and the same in 40v40 BGS. I thought with this PC, I wouldn’t have those drops and would be able to run the game smoothly anywhere. But apparently, the problem isn’t with my machine, but with the game, I think.

Hi! I’m from Argentina. I normally play at 200ms, which is optimal for latency. My internet speed is 300mb. I’ve always played with that ping from here. But yes, these are factors I didn’t take into account, and they must also affect the FPS.

What you’re experiencing is normal based on what you’re describing.

No its not due to your 1440p monitor. Keeping it simple, its just due to how the game operates.

I already bought and used it, thinking that since it was the best processor I could buy in Argentina, I wouldn’t have any problems. But as you say, I bought it because it was the most expensive, not because it was the best for the game. Situations where there are a lot of people in one place is when the x3D v-cache shines. Your problem is you are not currently using it you are gaming on CCD1 instead of CCD0 explained in more detail on my post above

I’ll make a short YouTube tutorial for you tonight and it doesn’t just help you it will help anyone on that CPU. I’ve been wanting to make this tutorial for a while I just haven’t done it.

On top of using the program there are a few things you have to do in the Bios. Im on a Rog motherboard so my BIOS may be slightly different than yours fyi. A lot of the options should be the same though.

The specs you listed are all very good pieces of hardware. The issue with the CPU isn’t that it offers excellent performance but rather it’s positioned poorly the the general gaming public as a better gaming CPU than the 9800X3D when it’s actually on par for performance as well as being able to perform better in areas that rely on heavy multi-core performance that most people don’t need.

this makes more sense than a scree freeze; don’t forget in 40v40 that’s a top of packets being sent to the server multiple times per second (especially if they are moving and/or casting) that need to be synced up along with all the other NPCs. Drops are to be expected although your seem to be more severe.

not so much on lows but on avg and high although your GPU is more than capable so it should not be an issue.
