Holy paladin was my BFA main. With introduction of holy power and being forced to melee, to me, it feels clunky.
Do I pump out extra cursader to get word of glory or do I just cast holy light? I miss holy shock reset procs. I don’t mind the lack of tripple glimmer, it was azerite, but with today’s M+, aoe beacon is practically mandatory for hpala imho.
So, naturally, I gave up holy being main. Ret is just sooo boring. So I game on paladins at all. Kinda wish they’d revert the change.

Strong disagree but to each their own

I didn’t like the changes at first and I said the same thing: CLUNKY.
But I also played Prot and the Holy Power addition to him was a lot of fun, and it grew on me, so I tried Holy again and now I love it.
Practice with Glimmer of Light, it’s very good and a lot of fun to play around. I felt like I needed aoe eacon as well at the start of the xpac but playing around that wasn’t fun to me. The downtime between beacons was miserable.
And Kyrian is just mandatory, imo. Not even because of how powerful it is, but it just fills that gap in AoE healing that you desperately need.
This is my favorite build ever for PvP. I’m having a blast with Holy.
I miss Cata/MOP Holy Paladins
Adding back Holy power for Holy seemed like a last minute design choice for SL.
Design Meeting: “So Holy Paladins, umm, any ideas?, Oh uhh add back Holy Power, people loved that right? Also keep glimmer…Perfect! Jenkins you’re a genius. Next class.”

As Xhant said, I also miss Cata Holy. The holy power generation is still the same but Holy Radiance (paladin’s Prayer of Healing) always gave a holy power charge with the Tower of Radiance talent. With aoe damage you just spammed holy radiance and light of dawn.
Personally the melee thing hasn’t changed. Even back we had to crusade to generate hp and get some mana back, so I’m familiar with the style.
I feel like the spec hasn’t changed much except for Holy Radiance and the mastery, which honestly is downright awful.

We’ve been melee for a lot longer than SL. Not sure why this is a sudden surprise.
Unless you are severely undergeared (less than 200) there is no need to use Holy Light if you have the right talents, and know when to use your cooldowns.
I don’t know who told you this because it’s not even remotely true.
AoE beacon can be somewhat useful if you are pugging and your team likes to eat a lot of unnecessary damage, but I have yet to use it at all for M+.
Are you running Awakening like you should?
Holy Paladin is in a great place to be honest. Only thing I would like is Shadow Resistance Aura back as a staple. And maybe change our Mastery because it’s the most dull thing in the world. But Holy is very, very fun right now and full on constant free procs.
EDIT: The one thing I wish we had back was Exorcism. God that was a fun thing to spam and kill people with.

I am a creature of habit and have been glimmer since first hitting 60, it’s not even remotely required to go beacon. I pug like 75% of my runs

I really miss WoD hpal in arena…the burst potential was sooo much fun, furthermore I really enjoyed mastery and healing applying an absorb
Could be worse, you could be a Mistweaver. Enjoy what you have.

Actually if you go back to MoP 5.4 guide, Holy Power mechanic is more or less the same, except there is no spammable AoE generator (which I miss a lot personally). There was also no clunky melee mastery.
That’s mainly what I’m on about, I don’t feel like they put enough effort into re implementing it.
Wish they would give us Holy Radiance back (Edit: Since they’re clearly okay with reusing old ideas for future class changes), or at least make Light of Dawn useful. They can take Light of the Martyr in exchange, I find myself hardly ever using it.
The spammable Exorcism someone mentioned was called Denounce and would be a ton of fun to have, but would clash with the whole melee direction they clearly want Holy to be, so I won’t hold my breath on it ever coming back.
Yeah this makes me think how all those extra things made specs fun back then. Seems like they almost restrain themselves nowadays and it shows in classes.
