I just got KSM 100% through pugging; some tips

Making your casters waste instant cds or worse, casting a spell on a orb you can kill in one auto is a waste of dps.

So is running all the way across the room to poke an orb right beside a lazy mage.

Yeah, I’m ignoring the explosives unless the hunter is dead lol. Nothing to hit them with anyway. Scorch maybe…but that’s too much work.

Different content, but I’ve been trying to use this outlook in group content for a while now, and I’ve found it to be really helpful. Best to just play your own character, work on your own strengths and weaknesses, and not get mired in internet pissing contests. For some players, the pissing contest is the actual game they’re logging on to play, and everything else is just sidequests. Just work around them and move on.

Depends a bit on the class but yeah something like a fire mage has no good way of killing em. In an emergency they can get one that no-one has accounted for but for the most part is a tank/healer/meleeDPS job… I say that as a healer myself.

They only spawn in melee my guy.

Yeah, I’ve gotten so used to interrupting immediately on shaman that it’s hard to break the habit on other characters. Cause if I don’t do it quick other people overlap usually and my kick is such a short cd I’d rather they save theirs but it creates bad habits when I play my mage or boomy even.

Anyways, congrats on KSM man! I hope to join the ranks before season end. Only got one 15 down so far.

I too prefer Arcane over Fire and can put out more DPS as Arcane than Fire. Just have to know when to time burn phase so you don’t waste Arcane Power in a phase where you have to be mobile / move. It’s a very nice DPS spec still, but requires timing, focus, knowledge of fights / bosses, and the ability to think fast if you’re targeted by certain raid / dungeon bosses that can mess your cycle up.

Glad to see another Arcane mage in SL.

They spawn within 3 yards of any enemy in combat with you/your group. So they can definitely spawn at range, but it’s typically around melee.

Great thread. I’d add one suggestion:

Voice chat helps A LOT. Not only is it easy to communicate things on the fly like “I missed my kick, can X get the next one?”, but it reduces toxicity within keys significantly.

Maybe it’s because voice comms helps people remember there’s another human on the other side of those pixels, or maybe people are just too scared to flame without as many layers of anonymity as possible, but either way it works and people are typically much more forgiving of mistakes when you’re in VC.

Such a positive post. Grats on your mount and KSM!! As someone who almost exclusively pugs, there are some great pugs out there that end up being really cool people. I’ve had more positive than negative experiences lately. I think end of patch people are more patient and maybe have learned more mechanics.

Oh look you’re one of the most broken op meta classes, I am completely surprised.

Tank groups mobs, melee is in group of said mobs, mage is standing 30 yards away. It won’t spawn at range.

Grats on the mount and achievement! I’d like to see a similar post from someone who achieved it using an unpopular class/spec (in the pug world). Arcane isn’t popular, mages still bring a lot to the table.

I’ve turned my back on pugging and have resorted to simply waiting for schedules to line up so that I can run with my guildies. The last time I pugged, it took 2hrs or being declined before i got accepted into a +8 PF, only for us to chain wipe for an hour before the tank finally said that he wanted to sleep, since he hasn’t slept yet. I only get an average of 2hrs/day, and I don’t want to waste it on that noise.

I timed two +21s and a 20 today while pugging. Is it really that much of a marvel? Just be picky with who you invite. Look them up, their experience (how many runs they’ve done + raid logs. You don’t want gray parsers)

Most tanks had their own routes, like 9 out of 10 of them, but a few tanks, I discussed routing with them before we started. Mostly it was what we wanted to invis in Revendreth dungeons on Fortified which can be really dicey. But usually, if the choice was what we wanted vs. what they were comfortable with, we went with the latter.

Yep, especially in the +12 and +13 range. Had a Spires go pretty badly after we pulled trash after the first boss incorrectly, and we ended up with a Prideful for like… the two mobs on the platform before 2nd boss. Hard to explain but stuff like that happened so much.

For +15 ToP, our healer got caught trying to sneak past an abom, and it made the Prideful timing super awkward. But I said I’d use all my CDs for that + some trash before that boss. The other two DPS held theirs for the boss and I think that saved us because we almost wiped from mishaps. But it can be hard to think on the fly for stuff like that.

tl;dr melee DPS.

Survival seemed awesome! Albeit it was only one of them and in a +13, but it seemed like his damage was really consistent throughout the whole run. Also there was an Enhancement shaman somewhere in there doing some disgusting damage at ilvl 207, and that pleased me since I have a soft spot specifically for them. Then there was a Feral who saved a wipe by popping into bear form long enough to soak a boss. And I enjoyed every Ret paladin I ever had, because they deleted so many problematic packs for us, although I guess that isn’t so surprising.

Many of the other rare picks like Demo lock and Mistweaver I saw in the 10-12 range, but I didn’t get a chance to play with them in 15-16.

I also had good success up through 15s taking Holy Priests in particular, although I know how strong they can be since that’s my healer of choice. It just felt a lot safer with them.

tbh the only spec I had somewhat negative feelings towards after all this was Balance Druid, but just the FOTM rerollers.

Absolutely. Playing my spec, the big thing it lacks is disruption (unless you take a truly atrocious build that hurts your ST damage and demolishes your AoE damage). So I made it a point to have people not be afraid to hold their stuff specifically for that. In return, if something like those slimes needed to be CC’d, I’d definitely rotate my own spells on them so the melee could stay on the boss.

Those are the people that make the experience worth it. Definitely worth making friends with them when possible. It’s just really pleasant when nobody’s raging and everyone remembers it’s just a game.

My brother plays a Havoc DH and seemed to get into groups fairly quickly just fine. Like in under 10 minutes each time. Meanwhile, I almost never applied to other groups to begin with. /shrug

Yep, ate plenty of kicks. Would rather eat a kick and do what I want than be forced to play a spec I don’t enjoy. Especially when I know it’s more than capable.

I play Frost and the other mage on our raid team is Arcane. I have been very impressed with his output, and his consistency. I actually have two other mage alts myself (I level to max one of each DPS spec, because I don’t learn it any other way than by doing it – swapping at max level doesn’t cut it) … and my take on Fire mage is if you play it well, you’ll beat the pants off most everyone else but it’s really easy to stink up a fight with it when things go wrong.

Frost is consistent, but has a limited top end. Arcane is an underrated spec, though. My friend, like you, will either play Arcane, or go play another class. He hates Fire and is ambivalent to Frost. It also doesn’t hurt that he has about 2x the talent I have.

So you got KSM playing a mage? AMAZING!!!

Probably true. I only do lower keys so maybe people only don’t do certain things because it’s low keys (?) but I’ve noticed ranged tends to not use interrupts when there’s melee too and in the past I’ll admit I never decursed anyone. I’m trying to do it now but sometimes I still forget. And then with ccing stuff, people - including myself - sometimes aren’t very flexible.

Congrats on KSM!! Really cool to read this from a frost mage too!
