I guarantee you the Classic Devs feel worse than we do

I got in just as easily as that. You really think they went through the trouble of giving streamers unique priorities for a stress test? Why would that ever happen?

/shrug because blizzard hates them personally for not being high end streamers.

Wow,

Thought I was being apologetic for Blizzard there. Worse case there are valid reason for everything they did, It just wasn’t communicated effectively.

But if the situation created a lot of “whiny man-children” out of people that support Classic that’s an issue. It’s best for all involved to not do that in future. It’s better for business to have your customers feel valued and support your brand, not be “whiny man-children.”

The only thing I think was mistake was the email set some unrealistic expectations. It’s great that you got in before Asnomgold. But it appears that might have been the exception, not the rule.

I dont give a stuff about beta, streamers, not getting in…all I care about is that Classic is happening!! This is the best thing Blizz has done in a looooonnnnnggg time! Thanks everyone at Blizzard working on this project! They did not have to do any of this at all, they chose to for the players.

Can no one see the difference?

Streamers (and many other players) have BETA access… the other people had Stress Test Access.

Having BETA access is almost undoubtedly the reason their logins were handled differently. NOT for snowflake reasons… but because it is a different set of privileges.

For example:

I would log on and get “No servers available”.
A streamer would log on and get the server list because the BETA servers were listed. Sometimes they would only wait til te Stress Test Server came online… where I would have to relog entirely and wait int he queue.

“But what about them being able to quickly start a character?”

Did it ever occur that the FIRST character you create in a server requires an initial setup on said character server? It is likely because they already had that done with their BETA account, that they skipped that part of the process… and that was a process being HAMMERED by all the people tying to log in.

So yeah Streamers SEEMED to get preferential treatment… simply because they were BETA testers and were streaming so you could SEE their success compared to your failure.

All in all… EVEN if there was such preferential treatment, SO WHAT?

While I battled gloriously with the log in boss… they were able to stream and at least allow me to share what was going on. I am grateful for that opportunity.

I did manage to get logged in a little over 3 hours later and create a character and level to 2 before the server went down for an extended period.

Then this AM I logged in with NO issue whatsoever, leveled to 5, saw what a phustercluck launch is going to be with or without login issues. And am rethinking launch day strategies…

I blame the interactive entertainment industry in general for conflating ‘testing’ with ‘early access’ and getting folks thinking that they are somehow entitled to play the game before release.

It was a test, we tested.

I logged in a bit ago, created a character, and ran around the starting area of Mulgore with no issues… Well, except for that sharding thing making my almost dead plainstrider vanish into the bit-bucket twice.

I doubt the devs feel bad at all. They should’ve worded the stress test better, but it seems the first two hours were designed to be just a massive load on the login servers and character creation screen, where after that we were given a “reward” in time to play Classic beta before our invites dry up, now, in 12.5 hours. Plus they got decent data from after that because we still weren’t able to log in for 1.5 hours after the stress test “ended.”

Except it was done for something you’ve missed.
FUN.
It was done to promote the hilarity of an army of lvl 1-5’s trying to take on tier end bosses with a latency in the 5 digits and frame rate of a potato.

It did go down for a while after about 3 hours. I suspect it was to update the settings/code to address bugs they found during the stress test.

I logged in this morning… quickly and easily. Found the starting zones CRAMMED with people. Leveled to 5 somewhat slowly… then logged out.

Give it a try now… we have til about 6pm PST. (9pm EST)

It’s not the classic devs that should feel bad.

It’s the activision marketing department that should. (or whomever is making decisions) At this point they have done an excellent job of pissing off and dividing the community over something as dumb as streamers.

Of course they feel bad. I’m sure they expected issues… which is why they test to begin with. And I’m sure they are satisfied with the results fo the stress test, having gotten the data they need to fix some now obvious issues.

But you better believe they would much rather have had a smoother test, and people taking about the glorious level 5 adventures that were had… and how fun it was for them to spawn the big bosses, etc.

It just didn’t work out that way. But again… THAT is why they stress test… so that it doesn;t happen (that badly) at launch.

I firmly believe the biggest issue was the character creation. I think the first time you create a character on a server it has to create an entry/account on the server. The reason streamers and other beta users got in easier was that they already had these accounts created… so creating a character was just looking up the account and adding it… where as we new people were hosed by the system being able to create the accounts fast enough.

Streamers didn’t have preferential treatment… BETA testers had an edge that helped bypass the problems the rest of us faced.

There were plenty of reports of stress test only peeps getting in.

Not entirely true, did you even See how many people made it in??? Streamers were dcd, had character creation issues, crashes, etc. How is that priority when everyone had those same issues…

Are you serious?? Grow up

Im sure they dont feel bad haha, they are probably actually enjoying all the salt on the forums. Not judging, I’m salty too

Your 100% correct. The amount of entitled asshats in this thread basically prove your point.

I was stuck at work sadly but being able to watch the streams was just like the GMs of old. It was really funny.

Stress tests are designed to be nuts, the fact that people are mad that 3-6 streamer “had priority” is a testament to just how entitled people are.

Get over yourselves and understand that this was for collecting data and the devs simply had fun with it.

Beta accounts already have character slots created from being in beta. THey only needed to add a character to their list.

Those of us brand new, had to FIRST have the account created on the character server… which is where I think the failures came in.

It’s all speculation… but reasonable for sure.

As a non-Blizz dev: yes.

They wanted congestion data. They got it. Why do you think they said “after” the stress test they’d leave it up until today? Because they know people want to play and during the stress test, most couldn’t.

This isn’t rocket science.

(where wow devs actually read things from popular streamers)*

Fixed that for you.

Look… we all were disappointed we didn’t get logged in… we wanted to play Classic! Even if it was only til level 5.

But think about it. Testing a handful of starting area quests? This was done… and is being done in actual BETA.

The rest of us DID help out… at least I know I did. I sat there like a good little boy and logged, re-logged, and re-re-logged… over and over for 3 solid hours.

Everytime I got an error, Blizzard’s logs got another entry. I even tried various “tactics” to get in… Waited for the Locked Server to Offline Server to Locked Server… etc to see if it would eventually come up as Medium or Low.

I sat at the character creation screen clicking the Create Character button over and over for 30+ minutes then clicking the Character creation failed button every 20 seconds.

Not all testing is casting spells and swinging swords… in fact… I’d have to say that those who had the issues contributed WAY, WAY more assistance than the BETA flagged people who were ale to slip right in without much issue.

And keep in mind… we were INVITED. Nothing says we were entitled to it. If you are invited to something and it’s not your bag of tea… you simply decline any further invites… but there is no inherent obligation to satisfy OUR selfish desires to play the game.

I think the community should look at this as a valuable teaching moment. This is a perfect example of what #NoSharding and #NoLayering would look like. This is the kind of “server identity” that some people are fighting to preserve. So I’ll ask the question again…

Would you rather have game servers that you can actually connect to, or this?
