Meaningful contributions to society don’t have to be huge, grandiose gestures. They can be as simple as walking around your neighborhood and picking up any litter you find. It makes your corner of town look better, it keeps storm drains from over flowing, it keeps microplastics outta the local water shed & makes your nearby streams and rivers a healthier place for the fishies.

If you want bigger opportunities - volunteermatch.org is a nationwide list of people looking for helping hands. You can search your ZIP code for local opportunities. The American Cancer Society also has an entire packet on how you can use streaming your games as a fundraising event. I’ve been contemplating hosting one in honor of all the people I’ve lost to cancer, which is a larger number than I could have ever fathomed. :broken_heart:

You can contribute. Your local department of health & human services office may also have a list of organizations looking for volunteers.

If you don’t wanna deal with people, but like reading/transcribing novels and books, Librivox.org and projectgutenberg.org are always looking for help.

This 100!!!

It’s the simple things that matter most. Even if all you did on a day is sit and listen to a troubled or loney soul vent anything on their minds - Yo’ve probably heard of a program “meals on wheels” where folks go around delivering lunches to seniors → One of the unspoken pluses of that program is many of the seniors get more out of someone just talking with them for a few than any food that’s delivered- there are so many souls out there who just want someone to talk to

There are probably food pantries or social justice minded churches in your area that could use help. Even just helping stocking the shelves in a food pantry or bringing a donation of cheap mac and cheese boxes - u’r making a difference.

i’ve done the relay for life a couple of times - there’s a point at night when they light all the memorial bags (luminaras I think they were called - then someone off in the distance starts playing amazing grace on the bagpipes - i usually am not crying at this moment - i’m freakin bawlin - what a kick in the feels :broken_heart:

Absolutely! A lot of local retirement homes will actually invite school kiddos to be pen pals with their residents. Even getting a little bit of mail or a holiday card now and then is a huge bright spot in their day.

Also check with your local military recruitment centers. Sending off cards and small gift packs to soldiers deployed out of the country is also HUGELY appreciated. My husband loved cards from people when he was away. He’d make a scrap book each deployment he was on of little notes people sent. It’s particularly meaningful because you’re away from family but it at least makes you feel connected to people who care.

TONS of great, low budget, low interaction stuff can be done. You need more ideas? Come talk to this old druid. Service and volunteer work is my third, fourth and fifth life. Good thing this cat has nine of them.

yess a proper night elf
Some of my own volunteer work is as simple as setting up coffee and donuts for seniors at my church to nom on after services - gives them a good moment to vibe with folks their own age

In the end it’s the little things we do that matter

‘I use to be a volunteer cook down at the RSL in my home town. I am sure you know what that is. I have a strong fondness for helping others as you already know, but that was definitely one of my favourite things to do. I enjoyed meeting them, but more so helping them enjoy their evening. It was the least I could do’
