How was dragonflight as a whole? Review discussion

I enjoyed it more than SL, WoD and Cata. I was looking forward to the next expansion but the current state of DHs going into the opening has soured me on it a bit. But I guess there is time for me to switch out my main once again, been a DH since Legion (was a rogue up until that point).

DF was more boring than SL for me. A few minot patches that u could finish in less than a week and then afk whole season once you got what u wanted. Story seemed nice at start but it got boring really quick (so did SL but not until ZM). Overall DF didn’t feel good to me at all.

Probably one of the most boring expansions to date. Almost as bad as SL.

TWW feels very similar too. The modern devs are just not that good.

All of Blizzard’s IPs are suffering from just lack of talent these days.

OW2 is a hot mess
D4 is a hot mess
WoW has been a hot mess since Legion

I guess driving out all your talent probably wasn’t a good idea.

I started around 10.1.5 so here are my feelings.

Story was pretty good, could be better, but overall good.

Zones are fun, except Zaralek, I barely go there really.

Gearing is very fun and the catalyst is a nice addition.

Solo shuffle is very fun but match making takes too long.

I’m not sure I like the new talent system, It really doesn’t bring a whole lot of build variety, it honestly feels like I have less choice than more when it conpared to the bfa talent system.

Overall i’m having too much fun with the game and thats what matters. So yeah, DF is pretty amazing.

I enjoyed it a lot. Was really laid back and I liked the content flow of it while I was active.

However, the part that was overwhelming for me was when I left for about 8 months due to health issues. I logged in and was instantly slammed with so many new quests, I had no idea which way to go and events were overlapping each other.

There was the new underground area, the dream area, new raid quests, there was a dragon flying around burning everything up. Like, ??

That’s my only complaint was the amount of stuff that was available all at once without any guidance on which way to go first, so I didn’t know how anything happened.

Best expansion in a very long time and a huge return to form. After SL I wrote WOW off as dead.

Story: 2/10
Systems: 8/10
Class Design: (5)/(6) / 10
Zones: 8/10

Overall: C+

I’d call it a bandaid expansion. It didn’t do anything terribly revolutionary or exciting (Dragonriding is cool though, I count that as a win) They patched up a lot of bleeding in terms of PvE gearing and systems. The zones are beautiful (though the art team seems to always deliver) but it felt like a very safe expansion. The patch cadence was great but all of the world content reused elemental storms.

The story was abysmal and at times hard to even follow or determine if it was coherent. Class design was all over the place with some classes being very easy and others having far too many keybinds. I like the return to the old talent tree system but I think there are far too many core rotational abilities on them.

To sum it up, it was nothing special but it wasn’t bad. Hoping War Within surprises me as of right now I’ve purchased to continue playing arena with my buddies but it looks very content-lite.

I pretty much loved all of it… except professions which I really didn’t figure out until nearly the end (e.g. “oh! I can send crafting orders to my alts?! Well then I would have learned that recipe sooner!”). Don’t get me started on the table that made me go into Brackenhide Hollow.

Only disappointment was I thought the Azerothian Archives was going to be something else. Not just one story told through digging. But like an actual archive…

I loved secrets, hope we find out what that chest we found at the end was. Because it seemed important! And scary! We probably won’t…

I really did have the best time, though. I played the heck out of DF. Still am to an extent.

Story:

  • Contrary to what some people have said, I actually liked the story overall. It’s a huge improvement over the disjointed mess that was in SL and felt like a nice mixture of WoD, Legion, and BfA.
  • The feeling of going to the dragon isles, the pacing, and the side stories were great.

General stuff:

  • Getting to see more lore on the dragons in general was fantastic.
  • The armor visuals are a huge improvement over the past few expansions
  • Dragonriding feels fantastic
  • the Zskera Vaults are actually a cool idea and I wish they would expand with more things like this. It made farming rares actually feel nice.
  • the amount of gear catchups is great. I never felt like I was behind even if I took a break.

Group content:

  • The raids have been absolutely amazing, mechanically speaking they are fun, and I enjoyed the boss visuals.
  • Dungeons were actually fun overall. Yeah, they could always use improvements, but the mechanics for them weren’t bad.

World content:

  • World content as a whole wasn’t bad. There is a lot to do technically at this point.
  • My main issue is world quests still continue to feel repetitive overall. I would like to see more world quests or just bring back older dailies or something to make the grind a bit more bearable.
  • It’s tiring to have to do the same 7 world quests every other day basically.
  • I would also like to see world bosses scaled up as the seasons go by. That would make them feel relevant for longer.

I enjoyed it. Easily one of my favorite expansions. I rank it a solid A-Tier alongside MOP.

Likes:

  • Profession revamp
  • Return of Talent Trees
  • Evoker was actually pretty fun to play
  • Liked the Dracthyr more than I expected
  • Dragon Isles’ zones were neat
  • While it was mediocre, I liked the story. It was leagues better than BFA or Trashlands
  • Opening up more Race/Class combinations
  • Follower Dungeons
  • No more Borrowed Power systems to grind

Dislikes:

  • Moving World Quests to a semi-weekly schedule instead of daily
  • The absence of ANY Shaman character and the Earthen Ring in an expansion all about the primal elements
  • Lack of any Troll and Tauren representation in the Emerald Dream
  • Dungeons were pretty, meh. Ruby Life Pools is probably the only one I even remotely liked
  • Zaralek Caverns and the Niffen were pretty meh. Abberus was a cool raid, though.

EDIT: forgot to mention Dragonriding. Loved it. Think it’s far and above superior to old school flying. Can’t wait for more mounts to use it.

On a scale of 0 to 10 it was a solid 5. It kept my attention, but I have no desire to ever go back to any of the content it contained nor are there any items I would consider farming later.

More pointed reasons:
I did not, and still do not like Dynamic Flight. There are a lot of reasons for me, but the biggest two are:

  1. Hand Pains - initially there was a lot more interaction required to maintain successful “Flight”, and I have severe issues with my hands.
  2. Visual issues - sensory overload was massive issue for me. It would literally cause my brain to sort of ‘soft lock’.

Both of these things got better as the expansion progressed, but my default is still static flight because, as the saying goes, once bitten - twice shy.

Furthermore, “Pathfinder” for access to static flight should not have been a thing. It should have been available from the same moment as dynamic flying. Period. Full stop.

Overall the content was neutral.
The zones were great. Loved all of them (even the stupid cave). The themes were cohesive. The environments were nice.
Dungeons were meh, nothing significant or interesting in any of them, including DOTI.
Raids were OK. Not great, not terrible, just OK.

The UI “”“overhaul”“” was awful, poorly thought out, and someone unskilled throwing darts at a sheet-rock wall could have done better than whatever that default was supposed to be.

Reagent bags were a good idea.
Multiple ranks of crafted items were an interesting idea, if somewhat poorly and unevenly executed.
Multiple ranks of crafting materials were not a good idea; Why does it take 24 slots for all of the various base gems!?
Crafting Talent trees were interesting, but also poorly and unevenly executed.

Item sets were nice to see again.

Overall a mixed bag.

Was pretty boring, cuddly dragons, group hugs….

Things were shaken up that much either, just the same thing over and over compared with other expansions.

Would have been better if we got a large continent like Pandaria or northrend, instead we got 4 new zones… and other small areas of small size.

Same old mythic+

Same old raids

Same old PvP that is balanced incredibly badly

It took years before we got a new evergreen system (delves)

And made a new change warbands that really should have been their a long time ago, after all who likes farming the same rep over and over again, among other things…

All these things in war within is great but it’s just making everyday life in wow more modern and comfortable for the player base

After all we shouldn’t have needed that vendor business like we did in shadowlands or before then

As a solo/casual player I found it a pretty okay expansion. I mean, I liked it. Truly. But I wasn’t super duper over the moon either. It was just okay.

What I specifically liked were new types of WQs like rock climbing and cataloguing and that they had their own little progression trees, I also liked the zones, music and some patch content like the blue dragon flight questline that brought us back into the old world, and the time rifts were really fun too.

What I didn’t like was that most WQs felt pretty much pointless and useless compared with other expansions and I hated popup content that comes every hour or two hours or what have you. If I log on at 1:46 pm EST, then I want to go do what I want to do at 1:46 EST, you know? All the waiting around made me lose interest way quicker in those activities than I otherwise would have.

Professions were also too messy, convuluted and punishing though I appreciate them being made more relevant. The new version of archeology was also a convoluted, buggy mess that made me lose interest at record speed. :woman_shrugging:

A solid B+ of an expansion. Better then SL, BFA and WoD. Glad we got rid of farming borowed power systems like anima and azerite.

Pros:

  • Good Raids
  • Good M+ rotation
  • Nice world design
  • Dragonriding was a fun and interactive way of flight
  • We actualy used gear from the crafting system
  • We were given a roadmap for the expansion Blizz actually followed

Cons:

  • Storyline not that great
  • Too many different crests each season that can’t be sold/traded once not needed
  • World content was mediocre
  • Expansion legendaries were locked to specific classes/specs only

So, there were only 3 raids but they were decent sized. But 3 raids is not acceptable. I’m sorry but there’s no excuse for it. The mechanics also just were generally the same recycled stuff over and over as well. I liked that they gave us a good catchup mechanic for alts but, once the Cavern came out, I was seriously losing hope for Dragonflight. And that was like, only phase 2 I believe.

Zaralek Cavern, a freaking cavern, in an expansion THAT IS BASED ON FLYING DRAGONS AROUND, and they stuck us underground? What an absolute failure. It was easy to get loot and grind and rank it up but, it was just such a misfire. DF dungeons also were mostly forgettable. I will say I believe Shadowlands was better, for the content we were given.

The main issues with Shadowlands was it was a bit more grindy, and they obviously started improving quality of life a lot more in later SL, especially after tons of people quit after the lawsuits. But purely content wise, not even close, Dragonflight is the 3rd worst expansion behind BFA and WoD for me.

For me and what I like to do:

Pros:
Mounts
Mogs overall
Dragonriding was fantastic
Dragon story was fine with me, side stories were boring though
Tons of quests, love questing so this was fantastic
Dragons
Trading post
World content was ok

Cons:
I only do mining and skinning but from what I saw professions were horrid
Crafting and trying to figure that out was annoying
Mogs had a ton of options which is cool, but it was a lot of too close like, tan, light brown, medium brown, dark brown, gray, light gray, medium gray, dark gray, then light gray and brown etc etc you get it. SO many to get if you like to complete things, but the colors were all the same and boring
Not enough unique mounts outside of dragonriding mounts

Probably more in both categories, but that’s enough for now.
Overall enjoyed the expansion a lot.

I would rate the main story: a solid D.
The side quests story: is a big F minus… minus.
The systems: Hm… B?

So overall… D+?

Worst Xpac to date, but that’s just me. YMMV.

It was Ok. I like dragon flying and follower dungeons, two of the best additions to WoW to have come along in a long time.

I didn’t like the first major quest line with the centaurs. They were far too obnoxious, bragging about their hunting skills then yelling at you when you were trying to help them.

I liked the Azure Span story although the goofy tuskkar where a joke that went on a little too long. I liked the Bronze Dragon story.

I didn’t like getting shut down in the Emerald Dream story and other places because they were hidden behind renown grinds although I was able to go back and finish them later when that limitation was dropped.

Overall, I’d say it was OK.

Better than the past four expansions by far.
