I can't imagine a raid filled with ret pali, ferral duids and melee hunters getting very far.
...
You going to wipe over and over until you finally figure it out. Not all specs are viable in end game.
Most specs can at least deal with early raids, at least with 1.12-style tuning. Heck, a well-played feral can actually put up pretty decent numbers. I think this is just a matter of early raids, where more specs are usable, vs. later raids, where the number of usable specs dries up.
It's true and you will cripple your raids progression by sucking up all the loot then becoming completely non viable at the next tier. No thanks.
If you're a bad. Pick the holy trinity warrior/mage/priest.
If you're an average dude. Follow OPs advice.
If you're smart and dedicated. Pick whichever class and spec suites your desires.
If you don't give a duck about tryhard losers who exclude from their BWL runs cuz they struggling on razorgore and blame it on their raid composition. Pick whatever class and spec you desire.
Each spec has a place they belong but overall they tend to be subpar, take up a precious debuff slot, or something else making them a less preferred pick for raiding, even if the raids are 'easier' due to tuning issues.

Each spec has their locations, but the issue is, you wont want to gear up a Ret when you have 4 warriors needing gear, and even after those 4 you would gear up another warrior encase one has to bail.
It's just better early game to make a proper comp, and then a second replacement group for situations that you need replacements thus putting the gear in more needed classes.

Not really. Warm bodies are more important than ideal specs.
Just kind of going off what I witnessed in the demo. People are going to be pissed when they level up with their snowflake spec and no one will give them a raid spot.
Although I understand and appreciate your sentiment.
You're going into this with the mind set that WAY too many people have, that mind set being that the only thing that matters is raid logging, pvp and just generally playing what you enjoy are huge things to factor in. If raiding is all that anyone should ever do ever then why shouldn't it be a rule in game that only one kind of raid comp can be played? Why bother with other team comps or builds? Who cares? It's all about being OPTIMAL and playing at the HIGHEST RANK POSSIBLE, why would anyone ever bother trying new !@#$ or god forbid doing anything OTHER than raid logging? Jeez.
He literally never said anything like that. He was just saying how to pick your class based on PvE probably because he is a raider. He didn't say anything about PvP because he wasn't making a post about PvP, he never inherently acted like raiding is all there is to classic just because he made a PvE post, that's insane

You may not like it but he's right. Some specs are bad and many people won't want anything to do with them. That's life.
Ok, if your wanting progression OP may be right..... if you want to have fun play whatever you like. Classic is more about having fun, leveling and community anyway. Truth be told most people never stepped foot in Naxx and still loved classic for what it was!

I'm coming from a background of being a pretty hc raider. Cleared MC,BWL,ZG,AQ(no cthun kill) and killed first few bosses in Naxx. I did it all on a Tauren hunter. Every time I'd check the raids parse and my dps was just below my troll buddies I'd regret not having that +5 bow skills. So even the race is important. Knowledge is power. And I'd argue that being powerful in a war game is pretty damn fun.
who knows what classic raids will be like once DBM is released for them

Going to be easy. But I don't think it's going to be so easy that people will embrace melee hunters and the like.
It's wow classic but with the hindsight of a much more experienced player base.
So depends on the guild or group you get. Some min/max guild that wants a server first yeah gl.
Or find a laid back guild that also know wtf they are doing and prob have done this all a hundred times- prob just want the min number of tanks, healers etc and will be more open to "off specs" to a certain extent.
I found Raiding to be the least enjoyable and most frustrating part of playing Vanilla WoW—unless I count my Guild’s weekly raids on Stormwind, but those were raids of a different kind. The best part of Vanilla was playing in opposition to another human player, not learning the strategy to defeat a coded scenario.
What strikes me as strange is why those weekly raids did not make me realize that PvP and the BGs were where my heart beats; that realization did not come until WotLK, when I gave up Tanking to play a Holy Healing Priest.
I agree with the Poster who asked “You mean I can only play one toon?”
My plan for Classic remains: to level an Undead Warrior and an Undead Priest, five levels at a time, switching off between the toons; and at 60, or earlier, if possible, founding an all Undead Guild.
If there’s a viable RP server in Classic I will try to establish all this on that, though, in whatever I do in Classic, I plan to take my time.
You need to pick your class based on the role or you will be sorely disappointed when it comes raid time. Just sayin....
Role call is:
Tank=warrior
Heals=shaman, paladin priest,druid
Dps=rouge, hunter,mage and warlock i guess
You forgot warrior for dps bud. Fury warrior tops the meters. You also forgot druid for offtank and paladin for trash tank. Also it's spelled rogue not rouge! Yes you will have a hard time raiding as a shadow priest unless you are the one special debuffer and yes you won't have an easy go of it trying to be a moonkin dps. I saw a post here recently with someone pouting about wanting to be an arms warrior in raids...I mean come on. We all know what works and what doesn't in vanilla raids so yeah build your character accordingly.
On another note if Blizzard goes with 1.12 without any modifications you'll be surprised how far the ragtag guilds full of boomkins and ret pallies will get. They may not get full clears and they may not get into Naxx but they will be clearing raid bosses.
Most of our hybrids healed, at least part-time, but when we could we tried to let them play a preferred spec. How you balance progress and player enjoyment is going to vary from raid to raid. Granted we raided as part of a somewhat loose raiding alliance on an RP server (that only cleared BWL before time ran out), but persuading a would-be feral to come heal for you can be a lot easier when you've given them opportunities in the past, so it can be a practical approach, in addition to wanting your friends to have fun.
