How new? Like no MMO experience new? Or new to WoW new? A lot of skills carry over from other games.
I would say for an absolute novice it’s good to level the class you want to play so you can learn it well.
I would warn your friend to avoid the community as they are mostly hyper-enfranchised manbabies.
