How necessary is BigWigs or DBM? and which is better?

I am relatively new and have never used either…but want to get into Raiding and M+ eventually, are either of those necessary? If so, which one is better?

Thx in advance

They’re basically the same, but Big Wigs uses less memory.

Most guilds will want you to have one of them, because it’s just better for alerting you to things than the base game.

So they both do the same thing, just one uses less memory? That’s the only difference? That seems odd to me. Guess I can try both, sometimes I forget I can just uninstall these addons.

I like DBM. It’s very helpful in telling you what the boss is going to do/cast next which lets you relax when timing your interrupts and stuff like that.

I prefer Big Wigs since it’s much less obnoxious than DBM.

One tip I have seen and would recommend is immediately turning everything OFF. Go into the options and unblock every spell other it’s overload, you’ll get sirens and poppies every five seconds and pretty quickly you’ll either be overwhelmed or just tune them all out.

Then when you mess up an ability go back and click it on. This way instead of 10 things it’ll only be tracking the 2-3 that impact you and you need help timing.

It also helps to move and resize the bars regardless of which you use.

Ok thx for this… makes sense. Which addon are you referring to tho?

I used bigwigs but I would assume DBM is probably the same, they’re all usually ON by default.

I’m sure there are some little preference differences, but they’re so minor, I haven’t noticed. I’ve used both.

BW does the same.

Then you’ll have to look into weakauras…

DBM/ bigwig are mostly good of the box. but weakaura require some tuning ( even if it’s just adjusting display for your UI) that scare a lot of people allergic to tech.

I am old, slow, and dumb, so take this as you will.

The first few times running a dungeon or raid boss, I find them very useful. After a few times through, however, you really won’t need it. You can keep using it if you want, but I prefer turning it off after I “get it”. The game does give you enough information and telegraphs the mechanics adequately so you don’t HAVE to use them. Do a few bosses with, then without, and you’ll see what I mean.

The two are largely the same. Most people use DBM, so I would use that unless you have a computer that is low on memory, then use BigWigs because it has a smaller footprint.

Having one of them is necessary. Unless you are magically able to pay attention to 10 things at once in a fight. They’ve made the fights complicated specifically because of addons like DBM, so now you need them to do the mechanics, for the audible cues. (in my opinion).

As for which is better, I think DBM has a better name. “Bigwigs” is just silly.

I don’t always run DBM in N/H Raid. Every boss has an announcement for when it is about to do a big ability which is easy to follow.

I like the customization of BW more.

I also use it more for the timers than anything. Just being able to plan cooldowns, etc.

and with BW you can set it up for only the job you are doing also
also op if you get bigwigs you need little wigs for dungeons

They’re both overrated. It’s WA raid packs that do the real heavy lifting.

I use DBM, just use it cuz it’s the one friends used

I find it more useful in dungeons than raids cuz it’s much easier than trying to remember ability CDs on multiple mobs

I use whatever. Any by use I mean I install it then disable pretty much everything that isn’t required so it ends up being just a glorified pull and break timer and since all of the ‘assignments’ it could do are usually done by Weakauras instead (which means they’d have to be disabled anyways) they are only ‘necessary’ based upon guild preferences.

Depending on how well you can see things on your screen (mostly just health/castbars) you can get by without using any in most cases.
