Basically during 9.0 I had two characters it was super easy to accomplish the weekly stuff and run some keys each week.
During 9.1 I started two more characters and got them up to heroic raid level or so along with my other two characters… while also running at least one key and accomplishing all the weekly stuff across all four.
I recently leveled and geared a fifth toon (this one) to 240+ ilvl and am starting to wonder how I’m going to accomplish everything I’ve been doing across all 5 starting the next couple resets.
How do you start patches? Focusing on one character then catching the rest up later? Or do you keep up with as many as you can each week?
I usually start with the intent to do one horde and one alliance. Patch story content usually doesn’t keep me interested enough to finish one or the other.

Lol, I just play one character at the start of a patch.

Only one, my main. I really don’t do a whole lot with alts, they’re not a priority for me.
When a new patch comes out my focus is just to get my main caught up and settled into a daily routine to work on reps and completing things. Alts can wait till whenever I get around to them. And even then I’m not going to that same extent of grinding or anything.
I didn’t want to do the maw so about three, then 9.1 came around and 9.1.5 made it better, bing bang boom now I have 16 at max level.
Depends on the content.
I start with this one, go through all the content to scope it out, and if it’s good, I’ll run up to 9 other characters through it.
Mostly this, yeah.
When I used to have guildmates in the game, I’d start with two, the guild character and then a solo character. Now it is just a main and then when I need a bit of a break, I’ll pull up a main for the other faction, usually Alliance. By the time the expansion ends I’ll have a dozen or more alts.
I might screw around on a bit on alts, but they usually don’t even get leveled to cap until I’m out of easily accessible things to do on my main. I don’t particularly aim to keep alts caught up, if it happens it’s just because playing them was enjoyable.
I play one character. I think I am in the minority.
Only one. The content is way too front loaded and I have to just book it trying to make sure my toon is ready by heroic week adapting to the new daily zone, m+ affixes, new raid, and so on.

probably just one at the very beginning of 9.2, since i want to get ksm on her right away. but I’m hoping to get my hunter going early too.
Pally (This one) fav toon but not my best toon.
My warrior
My hunter
My Demon Hunter
My rogue
My other paladin
My warlock
My shaman
My Death Knight
And thats it really. Not much tbh.

Just 1 ever since Legion. Used to be 2-3.
Gonna try playing more this time around. Got a 247 mage and a 230 warrior. Gearing the warrior has been a lot tougher lol.
9.0 and 9.1 I did with only this character. I finally got around to gearing up a second char and doing the campaigns. I just caught up the last 3 quests of 9.1 campaign on him a couple hours ago. Ready to hit 9.2 with 2 chars
Since Wrath, I’ve found I can only concentrate on three. I have five and idle two. Problem is that the OCD part of me insists on getting all five to max levels.
If I had less free time, two would be the max.
BTW, it’s not just time; doing the same dailies and quests on all five can get tedious.

after a bit, mostly when my main has nothing to do/i get a bit board ill bring a few aits up to max lev. right now with partch around the corner im levelin up a few and puttin them in there “correct cov” for the 2 legendary (even tho it will takes ages to get to that point, some will never get to that point)
I usually just focus on my main until I’ve done everything I can on that character for the week. Alts are something I mostly save until later in a tier, when I’d just be raid-logging on my main anyway.
I sacrifice this toon first,a sort of scout ,that way I can see the path I need to take.
I usually just doo either only my bear or my bear and some other random thing. This time it’s gonna be bear and disc priest.
