Population is fairly bad. Its mostly a few tighter knit guilds and then a good chunk of mindless gdkp zug zug groups. Probably will see a decent bump here this week with SoO phase coming out but I wouldnāt hold my breath on it lasting more than a month tops before it falls back down to those few tighter knit guilds and mindless gdkp zug zug groups again.
How long will it last? Who knows. If it gets era binned then it probably just sits there for a long time. Some people that cannot let go of their horsey collection probably no life it for life. If it goes to WOD (lol) then it goes there and just falls into the above cycle again but probably very so slightly worse off.
A lot of people are in the same boat, although itās hard to believe that theyāll just let the server die as theyāre still pumping lots of cash shop items. Either a merge into retail or progression into WoD > Legion is most likely but nobody knows for sure.
Population is far from what it used to be but there are still a number of āfullā servers so from a gameplay perspective itās not noticeable at all. Thereās loads of guilds still recruiting for SoO and you can still do literally all of the content.
If youāre bored and want something to muck around on that doesnāt require much time investment MoP is a pretty solid choice, with timeless isle right around the corner itās easy enough to catch up and get stuck into the content. I probably wouldnāt go grinding any crazy titles/mounts though just in case.
Classic 2019 ends and characters are merged into Retail
Classic 2019 continues into WOD and Legion and once it reaches region we will making this question again
Classic 2019 ends and they keep the servers as MOP Era and players will receive a free boost either on Retail or Classic Anniversary WOTLK (if it happens)
We wonāt know until the Blizzcon. In any case I doubt that closing the servers and losing the characters is an option. Blizzard has never done that. They have closed servers but those characters always had a new server to migrate.
There has been two other versions of Classic that have ended. Classic Season of Mastery and Classic SoD. In the first one players had the option to migrate to Classic Era or Classic WOTLK. In the second case players received free boost for Classic MOP but the characters are still there.
Siege is out this week and new celestials will be either next week or the following. If youre interested in the raid Iād say its a decent enough time to jump in. There are more casual guilds that would bring in someone newer and you can get your feet wet in some normals. The future of the realm is anyoneās guess, but they have continued to add stuff to the shop so its difficult to believe it would just end this year imho.
First of all, ignore any kind of doom and gloom posts. Iām beginning to think that some of these people with high post-counts are here with an agenda to neg the game and to āforum slideā negative topics to the top of the forums. Youāll rarely find them posting on any other topics - preferring the ones that cast any amount of doubt on the current or future states of Classic.
With that said, MoP is alive and well!
There are some gaps at lower levels, specifically for lower level dungeon grinding where you may encounter longer queues at off-peak times (depends entirely on your role, tank or healer will always have much faster queue times). RBG participation is pretty low, and while I donāt PVP anymore I think there are some reasons why. Arena participation seems to be pretty high, thereās often people looking for 2, 3, and 5ās partners throughout the day.
But I can say with certainty that for the last month the population of levelers and Celestial grinders as well as raiders has been much higher than average. Lots of people have been leveling up for the first time, the game feels totally full from morning to late evening.
As for where things go after MoP? To WoD, of course! I recently wrote elsewhere on these forums that as long as thereās money to be made, Blizz will continue to release expansions and fresh Vanilla progression servers every few years. Theyāre following Daybreakās Everquest TLP model, but not merging the characters to live servers. As they work through the transition from expansion to expansion theyāre building the technical roadmap to repeat the process as many times as they think they can support. They didnāt do this the first time around, because the game was new, and technology was still developing. Things are much more stable now, and both server and client tech are less dependent on high-end systems and infrastructure.
You may or may not be aware, but Classic was launched after Blizz started shutting down private servers. Blizz knows thereās a market for early WoW content, and will keep these Classic progression trains running so that people donāt play on private servers where they canāt monetize their own IP. Itās our community, but itās their business, so as long as thereās money to be made from subscriptions, WoW tokens, and/or shop purchases and services, thereās no reason to think itās anything but good for their business. MS Gaming made $23.5 BILLION last year, not on the back of the XBOX console sales, but on subscription services and through its acquisition of Activision/Blizzard.
Anyhow, enjoy the journey! Thatās what itās all about.
I didnāt miss it. I already said that I doubt that Blizzard will close deserve making everyone loose their characters. Specially, given there are microtransactions involved.
I never said what option I thought was more likely or unlikely. I just described what I think are the ony 3 possibilities. This one is the most unlikely? Probably.
Bad advice. Pandaria is my favorite expansion in the entire game and even Iām able to recognize that itās been completely abandoned by the devs. Enjoy what we have left, but letās not start trying to fool outsiders looking in that weāre in a good spot right now
So what, people should be focused on doom and gloom instead, and not - as you say - enjoying whatās left? Thatās a pretty stark contradiction. But I get it, itās okay to have two feelings at once.
I donāt raid. Donāt have time to block out for it during the week. I concede that there are bugs in the raids that go unfixed. But clearly that hasnāt stopped dozens of guilds from completing the content.
So when you say ābut letās not start trying to fool outsiders looking in that weāre in a good spot right nowā, youāre speaking to who, raiders? Raid loggers? Raiders and raid loggers who expect there not to be any bugs in the game? Thatās tunnel vision, not a general observation. Itās not me thatās giving bad advice to an āoutsiderā, itās you.
OP was looking to try something besides retail, asked about where the Classic train is going, and about the population. Sounded to me like they were testing the waters, just like dozens of people Iāve met over the last couple of weeks leveling up a tank/healer duo. Truth is, the MoP Classic population is fine. Thereās tons of things to do in game that arenāt raiding. And if the OP wants to raid, they can pretty easily find a way to do that. Timeless Isle is out, with all the new world bosses.
New people from retail are here to have fun. Are you saying they canāt have fun, because your favorite expansion has a few non-gamebreaking bugs in its raids?
Weāve interacted several times in the past, and in other threads youāve outlined your complaints about bugs in raids, complaints that theyāre discovered on the PTR and not addressed, etc. Thatās totally fair to be frustrated by that.
If Iāve misunderstood your position, please fill me in. What does āIām able to recognize that itās been completely abandoned by the devsā mean, exactly? How does Blizz leaving a skeleton crew to attend to MoP affect your game play? Is it something besides raiding that makes it ābad adviceā to welcome newcomers?
My questions are perfectly relevant, you just donāt want to answer them.
