From what I observe, still common.
The many communities I’m in continually post some version of “1 /2 spot need x”.
So I would say they are still rampant. When I recently premade we were just facing pugs though and only one or two other 5 man premades.

this is an mmo, blizzard will never get rid of grouping for majority of content ever, they will not discourage people from grouping into pvp content regardless of what it is, they even allow you to que with a healer in blitz and no one complains. take your loss and move on
i regurarly que with friends and family into bgs and it so happens we win alot because were on the same page verus alot of randoms people are doing random go figure so it will end in a loss

No, the best way to fix that is by reworking matchmaking for random BGs and add a hidden, loose MMR that ensures there are an equal number of sweatlords / noobs on both team (footnote: it’s fine for random BGs to mix noobs and sweatlords together in the same team).
In other words, the fully geared, 2k+, 5 man premade “group of friends” will get infinite queue times… or get matched against a similar premade and look and behold, they will suddenly find the random BGs way less fun!
Any other approach is a hack at best.
Well, most likely they enjoy stomping the daylights out of people. Some geared many are not. Just the way it is and has been for a long long time (Legion or prior).

Until Blizzard wises up and stops premades for randoms with options for premaders to go to rated it just going to be a mess. It’s honestly just flat out dumb they haven’t done it. So many options.
