There is this entire thing called “fair use” that does cover a lot of artistic and scholastic use of copyrighted works…
NOT a gray area. They have the authority to send a C&D or take over monetization rights.
As long as a song has ever been recorded, you can record a cover of it by paying a statutory rate.
“When you consider alternate methods of distributing your recording the rates vary: interactive steams (such as Spotify) enjoy the statutory rate of 1¢ per copy, and ringtones are 24¢ per copy.”
It’s also limited.

I’m very against copyright infringement and piracy in all cases not just wow. I’m not sure if this particular instance the OP described would qualify cause i think there’s more legal leeway when it comes to covers and remixes, but for me it’s more out of respect to the artists/people who worked on it than the company itself. I don’t really care if Blizz’s profits are a few dollars lighter. I do care that people are mooching off of the work of individuals and teams who put in time and effort to create something.
Not sure, but I wish you luck. Let us know how it turns out, and whether there is any truth to the whole “snitches get stitches” thing.
Then look up performance licenses and electronic reproduction licenses. You can cover any song that has ever been recorded for a flat fee of 7 cents per printed copy or 1 cent per copy if digital. You don’t have to even get permission.
I gotta say, this is some next-level snitching right here.
This whole thing honestly disgusts me. Snitches and taddle tales are the bottom of society. Mind your own business.
Ok Karen.

Why? Don’t waste your time
Why are foreigners so obsessed with making blanket negative statements about Americans based on the actions of one (xenophobic stereotyping much?) when their own countries are messed up beyond belief?
Hanging? I’m pretty sure it’s hanging. Or branding. I guess but only if it’s a little piracy.
Lets just call it a cover song. Nothing illegal about covering a song. Also, why do you care?
Honestly, as long as they aren’t claiming the song to be their own creation/work and letting people know it’s a REMIX, it shouldn’t be an issue.
Haven’t you ever been to a bar and heard a remix of a song? Do you really think all those remixes are sanctioned by the artist? and at the same time do you think the artist and their legal team have time for this small time kind of stuff?
Are you going to start going to bars and reporting DJ’s? Damn man.
Okay. As an artist myself, you have to back down a little.
I went and listened to the track in question and it does not use any samples from the original song (Aside from a spoken voice, which was not the song, only a part leading to it). It is simply a performance, much like how people can play Metallica songs on their guitars and sell cover CDs without needing Metallica’s full copyrights on it, as long as they make it original in some way.
The Spotify song in question is 100% legal.
Those bars most likely have paid a “performance license fee” to the ASCAP, BMI, and SECAC allowing bands to perform covers for a nominal fee per song.
Edit: Which the performers can’t actually get themselves in most cases, it has to be the venue.
Anyone remember when Disney tried to sue a children’s nursery with a cease and desist for using disney characters and mickey mouse, and it blew up into a copyright pr diaster while the Flintstones and Jetsons owner offered their characters for free and caused a great boon?
Many games directly benefit from their fan community and fan works and arguably at this point help with how terrible the official writing is compared to the fantasies of the players this Bfa season.
Imagine Blizzard being upset at free, fan-created publicity…
Holy sh!t, it was a binary question that received the requested response. Abort the thread already.
A binary question doesn’t use 15 lines of text to ask it. Would you like to see the question in binary form?
“Hello, I found something that I think may infringe on Blizz’s copyrights. How do I report it?” And that’s it. Nothing else need be stated. No description of the content, no justification, just the simple question and nothing else.
An alternative way of doing this.
