WotLK, Dec 2008. Loved the ambiance of the startup areas.
It was WoW. I was into fighters like Street Fighters/Tekken/MK until I saw a friend of mine playing this.
Tested it out on some dodgy pserver where half the things didn’t work, but it was enough to make me take the plunge.
Started retail just before TBC launched, took a long break between end of WotLK and Legion pre-patch… Been playing at least weekly ever since.
Do MUDs on a BBS count?
I had played nothing but First Person Shooters, literally nothing but them my entire life until I tried World of Warcraft. It was my ex that got me into it, actually.
Cant remember the exact one, Ultima online was in the mix somewhere.
Vanilla WoW in 2005. The RP is what hooked me. I came from Starsiege and Tribes before that. We had roleplay squads in Starsiege. We did a lot of text RP. Lots of character development. So I was excited to have a roleplay atmosphere again.
I played Everquest 2 before I really knew what I was doing, lol.
I have a big brother that always played MMOs, pretty much every one I’ve played, he got me into, aside from Toontown Online.
Toontown was probably the only MMO I played as a child, that he didn’t also play.
I’ve started out in Everquest 2 at like 7 years old.
Played Star Wars Galaxies when I was 9-10. Awesome player housing.
WoW, I first started playing at 11. I’m 30 years old, now.
Between WoW, I would stop to check out new MMOs all the time.
Warhammer Online, had fun PvP.
RIFT, I loved a ton. That was 2011. Also, great PvP.
Then, Guild Wars 2 around 2012 release, played that for around 2 years.
WildStar, really enjoyed the housing and customization there, PvP again, was a blast.
The latest MMORPG I’ve played was FF14, and that was during SL for WoW.
WoW won’t be the last MMO I will play, I love MMOs in general.
Just waiting for the next big one at this point.
Wow, another Tribes player! Lol I grew up with those shooters, I loved Tribes and Tribes 2, I played Tribes Ascend for a bit.
In fact, I’m currently trying out Tribes 3 Rivals right now lol. It’s different, for sure.
I miss playing Starsiege: Tribes, taking down generators to capture the flag, good times.
OMG I miss Rift so much. ![]()
I still play SWTOR but the RP groups I was part of are gone. ![]()
Yep! I hung out at Dynamix back when they were developing it. ![]()
WoW was my first MMO that I played on my own, though I played my dads EQ account now and then before that. I got my own computer for Christmas in 2004 and my brother-in-law got me WoW to go with it, since he was playing it with his work friends and wanted me to play too. I didn’t get my account made until the beginning of January, and funnily enough he quit after like a month, but I’ve been here ever since.
I’ve played a lot of MMOs since then, the standard stuff like SWTOR, SWG, ESO and also some more obscure ones like Marvel Heroes (made by the original Diablo devs, died for stupid reasons, RIP) and Wakfu which is a pretty fun turn based MMO. Also briefly played RIFT but didn’t do much compared to the others which I did endgame stuff on.
WoW has always been my favorite MMO though, and I don’t see myself leaving until the servers shut down, unless they like, delete PvP or something.
Same. While I couldnt go back to that playstyle, I am always happy with the memories I have of that time.
Everquest. And i think it was before there was even an expansion.
I probably started with the Choose-your-own-Adventure books (Grailquest), then moved on to Adventure games (Zork: Grand Inquisitor), before stumbling into Everquest.
After a while, and a serious bout with Diablo II, I moved on to WoW and have been playing that since.
Played FF11 for about a year-ish before joining WoW midway through 05.
11 was a dreadful game that was stupidly punishing and absolutely unsurvivable as a solo player. But it balanced this by having the only good mmo community. I would later try eq, ff14, and every wow killer that came out between tbc and legion, and every one of those games were just not the right fit.
Anarchy Online.
My friend showed me the nano technician class and said it was a mage, but using future tech.
Sold right then, still miss it sometimes today
Played Warcraft 2 when I was 5/6 years old. Then I bought Warcraft 3 and played that for a couple years until I was like 11. Then for Christmas I got WoW and got addicted so me rents took it off me and then when I was like 15 I started playing again and haven’t stopped.
Best game
Ultima online. The ultimate grief pvp game. It was originally a dry loot pvp game… Great lakes shard Black company. Was a ton of fun. We took grief pvp to a whole different level.
I switched to wow as Ultima was dying, extreme grief is not a sustainable model. Originally I pvp’d in vanilla, then got into raiding. Burnt out of high end raiding and ended up unsubbing near end of wotlk, came back.to df a decade later. Df seemed fun, and has been fun.
Saw my roommate in the AV cave with a ton of other players on screen. Then the gate opened and they all charged out at the same time.
