How can Overwolf have a monopoly on addon apps?

If it was profitable for Amazon/Twitch, then they wouldn’t have sold it.

Twitch did that before the app though. It’s a separate service. I’d be surprised if the app successfully created new twitch viewers who weren’t already twitch viewers. Certainly not to make up for the hypothetical net losses that you describe.

In fact, for Blizzard, it’s hazardous to have Overwolf hijacking their playerbase’s computers with accidental malware infections. Even if they can pass the buck and say it’s not their problem, it still damages their product, and thus they’d benefit more from just offering the service themselves.

thats prolly why theyre selling it: they thought it would work but it didnt

blizz will most likely still not get involved, the game does not require addons so they will just say “your fault for downloading that especially with overwolf history”

You need at least DBM to raid in WoW. I remember in an interview, Blizz talked about how they have to make their bosses more complex to account for addons. So addons drive design.

Blizz can start by offering a handful of addons and go from there. For players who want a very wide selection of addons, they can take a risk with Overwolf.

If Blizz allowed them to do some crap like that I would unsubscribe from this game in a second. But yeah this is Blizzard, and nothing surprises me anymore lol.

lol no they dont, maybe in vanilla with decursive but these days? no they design it with the base ui in mind.

Why do you think bosses are vastly more intricate now? It’s because addons will always tell you what mechanic is coming, with a little timer to prepare, and often it’ll even tell you what to do.

Sure, you could technically raid without DBM, but boss complexity accounts for players with all these little timers and alerts giving them a lot of information.

again no, they dont design raids with DBM in mind, they design them with base ui

Curseforge, where many addon exclusively have their development site, is going to make it so that other addon apps cannot scrape it for addon info. Without such information these apps will be less complete or at best lagging behind.

This will give Overwolf a slowly growing edge over the others until or unless addon authors move their development elsewhere or mirror it on another site. Given how Overwolf has acted so far I would not be suprised to see some sort of “keep it here and only here and get 'big shiny widget” program or perhaps a “if you host it offsite you will not get x, y, or z” instead.

I hope I’m wrong but…the proof will be in the pudding. They are already eliminating the best feature beyond having them all in one place i.e. one button to update all addons without paying for a premium service.

No, addons are account for in raid design. I found the article talking about exactly that.

Here you go, remove the spaces:

https: //www.pcgamer . com/the-endless-duel-between-wow-raids-and-the-mods-that-break-them/

all i see in that article is how they nerfed unitposition (rightly so), nerfing decursive, and mentions weakauras but hey heres a direct quote from the article:

“Despite the proliferation of flexible and powerful addons like WeakAuras, Day says that Blizzard still does not design fights with the use of addons in mind.” edit “In fact, their internal raid team uses the stock interface when testing new bosses.”

you were saying?

It’s hilarious because many people here forget that the curse thing is used by a great many other games for add-ons aside from WoW and many of those games players are also looking at alternatives because overwolf is such trash, I honestly hope they lose a lot of money buying this from twitch it’s the least they deserve for being such a scumbag company.

Yeah, I know it. lol

I was just noting the installer’s weirdness.

Morrowind modding is my jam. I’ve probably made a hundred of the things myself over the years.

Why did you cut out the last sentence in the paragraph?

“When it comes time to actually implement their ideas, though, they have to be more wary about how players might use mods to navitage, or sometimes even entirely circumvent, a challenge.”

You’re right though that I should recontextualize my usage of the word “design”. Blizz aren’t literally making fights that are unbeatable without DBM. However, addons inherently lower the difficulty of raid bosses, and they are more prominent today than back when bosses had like 2 mechanics each.

because that sentence is irrelevant to the point thats why

It’s not about if they can profit or not. It’s about is it worth their time and money to do it. That same money could probably be used for something else that is more profitable for them. Plus why would they want to get involved with addons, it’s probably small potatoes for them.

To be honest I’ve wondered just how Curse every made any real money off of their site. From what I’ve read, ad rates have really gone down. And I’ll bet even if they offered an ad free sub model, most of the players wouldn’t use it.

It uses an xaml base, so it’s quite easy to dig through and find when they do something questionable. If they ever decide to hide the source code I’ll stop using it immediately.

As a customer, the fact that the digging is necessary is what turns me off. You’re not digging because they might do it, you’re digging because they will do it.

If they are eventually going to start sending adverts using a poorly vetted advert network, then what they are doing now is collecting information so they can sell the adverts as targeted adverts. This is all pretty standard stuff. It’s all anonymized, so users aren’t (afaik) being individually targeted for anything nefarious, but I’m already spending money on the game. I have no interest in making money for a third party with little to no benefit to myself.

I installed Wowup yesterday and I am super impressed so far. It’s better than Curse (or Twitch now) ever was. I didn’t even need to create any account or log in to anything.

I’m going to have to give Wowup a try. I have not plans to install OverWolf, there are just to many horror stories out there about them. They just seem like a really sketchy company. And even though Twitch is working, it’s been acting weird for me. I’ve been manually updating a lot of my addons. It’s just a shame there isn’t another alternative, but as I’ve said earlier I don’t know how they make money off of hosting the addons. Well besides putting a bunch of intrusive ads in.
