From what I understand, your first purchase of a unique decor item grants you housing experience. I just spent like 10k on buying items off the vendor, but I don’t see my experience going up. Am I doing something wrong? Do I make a ticket?

Has to be uncommon or higher quality, it will tell you if it will give exp on the tooltip.

Depending on your creativity, you could have dozens of the same decor and still not be enough. I got most of the wall type alone at 60+ each.

I believe he means the common practice of building objects out of other objects.
Some people build an entire unique-looking mansion from pieces of furniture that were never intended to be used that way.
I see a lot of using resized versions of very common decor instead of any intended structure you can get. I saw a dude who built a giant tower using mostly dirt-cheap silvermoon tables.
That’s why the other guy said you might not have enough.
