Hey, remember the Real ID fiasco from 2010?

It’d make a certain Hunter spamming threads then also filling the threads with replies agreeing with themselves a little bit funny. Back in the day there was some extension that showed alts, and I miss it.

Pretty sure they all live under Redridge Bridge at Lakeshire

You would have to been born yesterday to not realize things are orders of magnitude WORSE now than even imagined 10-12 years ago.

I don’t want my real name displayed for my friend’s list-- people who I play with who already have a head start into thinking they like me.

There are people here who would probably key my car just because I beat them in an argument.

Cogshanks! It operated on the old forum software based on being able to ignore all alts on an account if you ignored one.

The current forum software does not work that way. You have to ignore each and every one separately which is a pain, and also makes addons like that not workable.

Bring on the Btags please Blizzard! With our chars as avatars of course and a free Btag change so everyone can pick one they are comfy with and that is within the rules.

I think people today have become so authoritarian towards each other and so submissive to corporate masters, that nobody would bat much of an eye about it today.
That said, I don’t mind the idea of battletag being used for the forum instead of characters. Don’t the SC2 and Diablo sites already do this?

The problem is that that hunter is using multiple battlenet accounts meaning showing battletag will fix nothing.

The mods simply need to deal with it.

I wouldn’t go for a Battlenet ID either. That would give people the ability to harass and troll the entire account.

What it should be is a single forum persona like the OW and Diablo forums. Don’t tie it to a specific character at all.

Yeah, I remember the community managers name both online and what his revealed name was. I won’t repeat either and have no idea why I remember that so clearly.

As I understand it, several individuals actually bought and sent him Pizza’s at his home to make the point of how quickly that could go bad. That’s why they changed it so fast.

Why does real ID come up when other forums operate very well with just one username that people get to use per account?

Real ID was always and will always be a bad idea. One username is fine.

Not sure what you think this would accomplish. These forums are an antique piece of trash these days, all the cool kids are jerking it at WoW reddit anyways.

Battletag would be fine, though, right?

Yes because it is a username you choose for your account.

People would just look up info on you and use that to invalidate anything you say. Not to mention use it to also mess with your real life which is not okay.

But yeah I remember it and the thread that blew up so fast I don’t know if any today was as popular.

What’s anything going to look up with my btag, lol

Not your btag but your full real name.

Obliviously, merely processing a battletag adds a layer of credibility I never imagined…

The forums don’t matter to them, at least it shouldn’t. I’d imagine we’re all a spec on the windshield of the community. If forums really mattered we’d get regularly updates and this would be their main feed of communication.

Just don’t take the forums super seriously and you’ll be fine :stuck_out_tongue: they clearly don’t.

If your btag is the same as your email address, and you use that email for other things, sometimes people can find out things about you.

They’d need to give everyone a free bnet name change.

Oh #%@^ no. Not in this day in age. People are too stupid, cancel culture and all that. We see how great it works on Twitter sometimes.

I might have been willing to use my actual name in posts 10 years ago, but not now. Not that it wasn’t a really @%@%ing stupid idea back then.

Every other Blizzard forum uses Batttag and then you select your Avatar that displays for the picture. They paid extra money to have the software modified to allow posting by separate chars here.

It does limit it though, a lot. From hundreds of chars per Bnet down to 4 or 5 Bnet accounts.

OW and Diablo use our Battlenet tag. It does not give anyone the ability to harass you. They can’t even message you without permission. If you don’t want to talk to someone, decline and block if they request friend.

Our current setup DOES allow harassment. I can log in to your server, friend you without your permission, send you in game mail, send you whispers, etc. Character-server is a lot less private than Battletag.

Which would be silly if they were the same. We all get one free Btag change. I have proposed that yes, if they changed the forums, anyone who does not have a free change left should get one. That way they make sure their Btag is within the rules and something they are comfy with.
