That still wouldn’t work, as you could upgrade a piece, upgrade another for free, then downgrade and get refunded. If you were able to salvage crests, I see no way of doing so without removing the discounts

Upgrading a piece of gear into it’s overlap point is always burning crests. The only reason to ever do this is if you’re literally never going to replace the item at that level, or you only have a chance of getting something better.
If you will never get a Mythic Spymasters, fully upgrading your heroic one always makes sense; additionally if you’re banking on luck to get a Myth track version of that M+ trinket you just looted, then it’s also reasonable to upgrade it.

I’m new to this delve stuff. I really want to work towards the myth dk red set. All I have to do is 9s all season or use the crest to upgrade it for the myth color?
tier 8 delvers bounty gives 4 runed crests. 9 gives 6. 10 gives 8. and 11 gives 10.
11s also give 21 crests.
9s delvers bounty gives enough for a full mythic set at the end of the season, and 11s can get u it sooner if ur comfortable at that level of gameplay.
im just taking the simple way.
so basically, whatever level ur comfortable at, use a delvers bounty on tier 9 , 10, or 11 delve
on tier 9, six crests, multiply that 6 crests by whatever many weeks of the season, ima say 23 weeks. thats enough for a mythic set by the end of the season.
15 crests to unlock the mythic color on a hero level piece.
also do ur nemesis boxes on tier 8 or higher for those sweet runed crests as u also need those to even get to the upgrade level to use gilded for mythic tmog
u can shave off an upgrade if u dont care for the bracers which you wont see anyway
also pro tip; sidestreet sluice is super easy on tier 11 so whenever its up try and do ur 11 for that so u get 7 crests. use delvers bounty as well to get 17 crests instead which is an upgrade to mythic tmog

yeah, if you level a piece to hero 5/6 you’ll get the myth appearance

If you don’t get myth items right away, your gilded crests will just pile up if not spent.
I’m a delver so Hero track is where my gearing ends.
I plan to use my gilded crests to craft things first
- Weapon(most important gear slot so everyone should craft this first unless they getting mythic weapons)
- Ring (the circlet is said to be bis for spriest for whole season)
- bracers or boots we see by then where I’m at

Champion track gear is just mythic gear that makes you waste your runed you could be using to upgrade into gilded to upgrade mythic track, veteran gear is just mythic gear that makes you waste your carved that you could turn into runed that you could turn into gilded to upgrade your mythic gear…
I know right now you should never fully level up your adventure gear for example, because it’s cheaper to MAKE blue 629 gear with enchanted weathered crests. 60 crests to upgrade from 5-8 and 30 to make the 629. Not to mention saving all of those stones.
This is a pro tip for lower gear folks, but figured this felt a good place to share.

Slow but easy process to follow:

Only upgrade your gear up to 658 to unlock the Runed achievement (the one that lets you convert Runed to Gilded).

Buy more gilded crests and use gilded crests to craft 675 gear.

Good points. I don’t really have any rebuttal. Overall I am sure the system is set up to spend spend spend with your crests. Personally, I have no intention of reaching Myth gear (if I do, cool, if I don’t…doesn’t really bother me), so spending crests on hero gear is a good investment to me. If I do get myth gear, I’ll either rotate out any Champion gear I still have first (if possible) or just bite the bullet and replace the hero piece I upgraded to 5/6 or 6/6.
Now, if I could CHOOSE the pieces when I get them, then it would be a different story and I might be a little more conservative with my crests, but until Blizzard implements an option like that, this is what it is going to be for me.
I don’t really find it that huge of a waste. I can craft something with Runed crests that basically rain from the sky and just recraft it with Gilded once the transmuting threshold is met.
I will, for the meantime, just burn them to upgrade Hero gear since Sparks are timegated. There’s no huge rush and you’ll have more than enough Crests to do eventually anything you want, anyway.
665 will do just fine until I eventually craft myself a 675 boomstick.
A lot of what this system faces is nothing more than a PR problem.
Pretty much everyone is like the OP, and has moments where they’re annoyed with “upgrading their gear.”
Except, that’s not REALLY how the system works.
You upgrade THE SLOT.
The next time you put gear in it, it only costs Valorstones. And… we solved that problem in S2. If you don’t have 2k Valorstone right now, I dunno what to tell you. They’re to be had everywhere, from 100 different sources now.
Regardless, you’re either getting a discount ON THE SLOT, which makes future upgrades trivial…
OR…
You’re really pumping, doing the minimum upgrades to your Heroic gear, because you know Mythic is coming which… AGAIN … makes upgrading trivial.
FOR THE MOST PART (I’m sure there are outliers), this is only somewhat of an issue for about 3 weeks. It seems like such a torture during those 3 weeks but … chill out. It works itself out. Are you new here??
People spazzing about how inefficient it is to get to i665/ 3k IO … IN THE SECOND WEEK … sorry, not hearing it.

I pretty much wholeheartedly agree with the points you’ve made here.
I think one exception is when gearing changes for some specs season-wide. (For Blood we start looting in Unholy, then go tank loot for tome when everything else is done)
My main has a maxed out Hero Tome of Light’s devotion. I’ve made the justification because I know I’m far better off looting ‘Unholy’ in vault because 90% of my trinket options are better being DPS. Until I have enough crests and a myth track trinket I am certain this is my BiS by a long mile. By the time I can afford to fall on bad tank trinkets in myth slots crests will likely be uncapped.
The players who are at the level where they can get myth gear generally know what they’re doing when it comes to playing the game gear acquisition and upgrading. They’re already aware of this overlap and either account for it or already know to not ‘waste’ crests on stuff they’re planning to replace anyway.
The folks most likely to be caught out by this ‘trap’ are the ones not really getting myth-track gear anyway, so they’re generally not ‘wasting’ anything by upgrading their hero-track gear.
This is why Ive just decided im not upgrading anything until its the final piece ill have for the tier. I dont care if my ilvl suffers, I’m not wasting crests again like I have in the past.
(And on that note, why do we need explorer & adventurer, and 4 types of crests… Just start ppl on vetern plz… And i dont mean take from the world quest folks, just give them all vet)
