Haranir are actually descendants of Dark Trolls

Now that you say that. That wouldn’t make much sense. If these are dark trolls, then they wouldn’t be known as one until the Zandalari branched out into tribes. According to the Haranir quest, they were long lived to the surface to witness dragons and titan constructs (E.I. Freya) till finally went under ground.

Yeah this race is a hack reinserting his lazy elf concept from another game he worked on into the lore before he got fired in the Dream patch and we’ve just been stuck with it because the wheel turns too slowly and the devs didn’t care enough about lore consistency to pivot away from it.

The Haranir being terrible in their lore and useless is something i legit wouldn’t doubt other devs have dialed up out of spite LMAO but it is frustrating. They’re a player race now so they’re permanent and prolly unfixable

Asking for clarification, but they do just replace dark trolls right? Dark trolls were the in-between race of trolls/elves (the purple trolls) that had proto -druids/elune roots that lived underground and fought the void. Haranir do the same things but expanded on. There is no reason for dark trolls to exist anymore unless they make haranir the actual dark trolls.

The lore on dark trolls was just like 3-4 paragraphs and heavily inconsistent in their appearances. Even Speaker Ik’nal in Dazalor could just get a new model since hers is just a reuse of the shatter spear jungle troll skin. Not saying this is a good thing but just an observation from how little blizzard cares about trolls and just seems to want to make haranir mostly for night elves with little for trolls.

Blizzard said that all dark trolls died and there was only one, a woman(heh) alive in zuldazar, she is literally the last one, so everything related to then is also dead

They can retcon later, but i doubt

that’s the point. Why make an in-between faction when the half of its relatives are dead due to blizzard forgotten about them in cata and not caring about writing any story for them. Are we going to find out the haranir saved the dark trolls from the night elves/void cults because having no dark trolls in the story just makes them the new dark trolls. Like the haranir are just a transitional species for ANOTHER transitional species. it makes them redundant or the dark trolls redundant.

Dark Trolls weren’t really the intermediate stage between Trolls and Nelves, they were just the Troll subtype from which the Nelves happened to evolve. As far as we know they didn’t exhibit Nelf-y traits or anything. The Haranir don’t replace the Dark Trolls, the Dark Trolls’ existence is firmly established in the lore and regularly reaffirmed ; rather, what makes the most sense here is that some Dark Trolls, instead of evolving into Nelves, evolved into Haranir.

It is plausible that this is the case, yes, that they are retconning out the Dark Trolls being the ancestors of the Night Elves and instead having it be the Haranir.

I understand their place but more the purpose in the story. They existed but never expanded on like the level of any of the titan-born of Azeroth or Draenor which the writers love doing constantly. It is just hollowing to watch the active bias in the story where we have elves survive the same thing trolls do and get 100+ pages of story, new factions no matter how small their population is, but having more then 1 dark troll in wow who is a non-character like Ik’nal in contrast to all the void elves and now haranir feels counteractive no?

I am biased myself I wanted to see dark troll story of them being proto druids/priests of elune, or if elune left them to die during elven expansion. Did the wild gods betray them? Their ties to Hyjal and the nightmare/void. What drove them underground when no other troll lived underground. Why there was no dark trolls in the shadowlands at all. For a dead race we find non of them in the lands of the dead like the other side or ardenwield.

Baalsamael, prolific Troll advocate, has constantly pointed out how the Haranir have no cultural showing of Trolls, only superficially that some, not even all, Haranir have tusks.

They are definitely more tell don’t show re: any troll connection. We’ve even got troll activity in proximity to at least Orweyna, and I’ve not really seen that there’s any cross pollination or interplay going on there.

Unless you count veggie dinosaurs existing down there, I guess.

Not even tell. I’m not sure how many times I have to state that the beta removed any mention of Trolls in the Haranir history that was in the alpha. I’m just going to start a new thread at this point.

I’m talking about actual dev discussion and coverage. Elf/Troll is the mold they were designed in. They just sorta forgot 90% of the way into the process that they had only been working with pieces from the Night Elf crate.

I don’t see the reason why they just don’t specifically state they descended from a group of trolls who went spelunking once and never came back up. Unless they’re trying overly hard to force Haranir be their own thing, without any sort of connection with trolls or elves.

Gotta love these Danuser brain droppings given digital form.

They were a creation of Danuser. The iteration we see today in Midnight is 100% not the one Danuser had planned. This version is what Metzen and co reworked to ground it in the lore. It feels like he leaned on early night elven concepts he had back in the day that he struggled to get anyone to buy into and wove them into what we see now as the Haranir.

Blizzard DOES NOT WANT Azeroth to be a Horde race, and the Horde has the oldest naturally occurring races on the planet. So they made Night Elves 2.

They saw that dope art of azeroth being a troll and said absolutely not, we need it to be an elf

Imagine if this is why they created haranir to begin with.

I’m sure they eventually have plans for Azeroth to make an appearance in a humanoid form, but they wanted to make her appear in a more neutral light. So they made these new guys that are stuck somewhere between troll and night elf (though Clearly leaning towards nelf) that are her direct worshippers. So now they have a base model for dear ole Azzy to make an appearance in.

The problem with this, of course, is that if they’re goal is to avoid offending one side or the other, they seem to be irritating even more.

Which itself was a retcon of Warcraft III, where Night Elves where the oldest race on the planet.

Who are likely the ancestors of the Night Elves.

You’re assuming they care about offending the horde. the only things harranir have in common with trolls is OPTIONAL tusks and pointed ears.

To be fair, the changes of the Haranir history in the beta from the alpha are likely because Troll fan feedback of the Haranir calling themselves the superior form of Troll. So now they’re likely not Trolls at all.
