Friendly reminder that there is nothing wrong with your hobbies, if youâre enjoying something in moderation, nobody should be able to tell you its wrong to enjoy.
Men generally are action orientated and when there is a problem they seek to solve it instead of just talk about it. This is why there is the classic joke about the woman wanting to complain while the man is trying to fix it and the woman getting upset because she doesnât want it fixed.
There are types of therapy that are decent (DBT) but the classical psychotherapy doesnât tend to work as well for men because its just talk without action.
This on top of the fact that if all your going to do is ask how I feel about it and repeat the last word I said as a question than I can just use a dog as a stand in for the therapist and do the same thing for $300/hr less.
The best therapy for myself has always been work to get your mind off the issue, identifying and finding an actual solution to the problem, and when all else fails put on some boxing gloves and have a good fight. Nothing puts your problems in perspective like taking a fist to the face.
The best advise Iâve ever had has come from non-proffessionals. Just conversations like:
So you donât like your boss?
Nope, hate him.
You donât care for the work?
Not usually, bored as hell most of the time.
You donât feel like the work does anything important?
What making read write heads on drives⊠Its hardly world changing stuff.
Than quit.
I did quit and Iâve been much happier for it and the advise came free of charge and without hours talking about feelings.
As far as people not establishing boundaries thats on them. If you ignore them once they are put in place thats on you.
I do find it odd all the talk about therapy improving peoples lives yet the people who go for years on end seem the most miserable and its certainly not helping therapists themselves who tend to have high suicide rates. Yet third world countries where such âhelpâ is not available seem to suffer from mental health issues a great deal less despite sometimes living in a war zone. Perhaps its time to step back and ask ourselves why our method seems to be failing.
Iâm not to big on aircraft myself.
But I have always wanted to hear the Thunderscreech.

And the A-10 Warthog is amazing though its not an aircraft.

Happy menâs day to all the manly males manning around.

I agree, only I donât fight. Instead I go for hikes or work on the house Iâm supposed to be restoring.
Itâs slow going.
Back day for me, but that includes lifting with your arms, so kinda of a biceps day!
Hiking is great as well. Its a way to get away from society and other people and get back in touch with the world and just be at peace. Granted thats just weekend hikes.
Iâve always wanted to do thru hikes of the CDT, AT, and PCT but those are a different beast and with a family to support its just a dream.
Bouldering can be great as well as your mind tends to focus on the technical aspects of the climb and you donât have time to deal with worries.
Thinking about it more it seems like what Iâve heard a lot of combat vets talk about. In combat everything is fine because you are laser focused, its only when you have time between fights or in the lulls where you start to think about stuff and well I guess have time to fear things. Maybe thats why we have the mental illness issues we do here in the US. We have the lower tiers of Maslowâs hierarchy of needs filled so we tend to spend more time in abstract thought and focused on feelings.
While I might disagree with some tidbits, bigfel and the otherâs are right I feel. Self-reflection and quiet have made me calmer and allowed me to go after my career ( I get mad sometimes but itâs alot less nowadays.) I might even get therapy one day. A mental health journey is needed dor everyone, even men, we are human.
