Never liked cross bows and guns were ruined when they change them to sound like staplers.

As mentioned here, it all depends on the race and mogs you’re using your hunter.
Specially since any ranged weapon can be mog’d into any other ranged.

I prefer bows, but will settle for guns
In Classic and in Wrath of the Lich King days, the gun blast sounds were too loud and go annoying after awhile so I always preferred bows. Plus my hunters were a Troll and Nelf so racials for bow and troll were good and thematically good for Nelfs.
They’ve lowered the sound of the gun blast now but I still prefer the aesthetic of the bow. If I played Dwarf, I’d likely give him a gun for the theme.
The game has a huge problem with over exaggerated weapons. I like the less extravagant models of some of the earlier xpacs. I tend to prefer bows or crossbows. Guns don’t appeal.
It depends on the race, gender, and their animations.
On my main here, I prefer guns over bows over crossbows.
But I don’t mind which weapon I use — because, again, it’s about the character’s animations. 
Always a bow. In fact, that’s the only time I really care about transmog.
Guns for my Dwarf, Gnome, Undead and Goblin hunter… Bows for my Nelf, Belf and Human, Crossbow for my Kultiran, for some reason it suits them.
I run survival for my Orc, Tauren and Troll hunters…
Currently, a bow. But only because it’s the best-looking bow in the game.
But for the longest time, Wolfslayer Sniper Rifle. Even with the ridiculous low-poly flat-sided revolver magazine.
I have a hunter named Gunbuster that uses guns, and one named Bowbahfett that uses bows.
And sometimes this hunter will use a gun, but I prefer the look of a bow.
Ive seen someone online who made a full size replica of that one.

I’ll use best option available, but will immediately transmog it to look like the Talador Hunting Rifle. It’s my favorite looking ranged weapon.

I prefer bows, since I find the sound effects for guns so very annoying.
But, it depends on what mog I have.
Sometimes guns or a crossbow just look better…
Normally I much prefer the look of bows, but I absolutely love this gun I have mogged
bows… unless maybe the mt legion or the one from challenge mode from wod.
My Night Elf hunter uses Titanstrike.
My Void Elf hunter uses Thas’dorah because “Dark Ranger”
