Growing PvP

I think to grow PvP we must accept that it would involve doing unprecedented changes to PvP. Doing the same thing will result in the same change. Not to say there haven’t been great additions to the game for PvP like solo shuffle, bg blitz and training grounds. But clearly it hasn’t been enough.

Personally I consider myself a casual PvPer and mainly a PvE player. So I am going to approach it with that mindset. Since I think to grow the PvP community involves getting PvE players to try it out.

I just play at the end of the season to get the vicious mount and the 1800 set for a class I think the mog looks good. The biggest thing that has gotten me to PvP the last few seasons was bg blitz. I’m not super into PvP overall but I can think of things that would make me PvP more and that would be incentives.

Alt Friendliness
Make alts more attractive there are occasional seasons where I see an elite mog set for multiple classes I’d like but it can be annoying to gear up so something where you get bonus honor/conquest on alts after getting a full conquest set. The bonus conquest buff later in the season is nice but realistically what that mainly does is tell players to do PvP later in the season. It reminds me of what Ion said about the Collector’s bounty event. If it happens too frequently then players will just wait for it.

World PvP
I think crate farming has become an issue. While it is nice to just join a group and go watch a tv show while farming crates. I think is not with the spirit of PvP but players are naturally going to do the path of least resistance. There is little PvP involved in these crate farm groups occasionally just massacring a couple people who have the misfortune to be in the same shard. There have been rare occasions where two crate farm groups meet but it is extremely rare.

I think the solution is to nerf conquest gains from crates and give minor conquest from world PvP quests to encourage more people to do these quests instead of the crate farming tech. Another thing would be to add a mount reward for world PvP meta not just a title ex: if the Slayer’s Mastery achievement had a mount reward in addition to a title it would promote more participation in Slayer’s Rise than just the Voidslayer title alone.

Updating Old Systems
The honor levels system is severely outdated. Either an entire overhaul should happen or adding onto the existing system so there are more rewards. Currently after level 200 there are massive gaps of rewards spanning 50-100 levels. A new or casual PvPer will look at that and think it is not worth the effort. There should be more rewards added at the 25 intervals that from 200-500. Here are some examples of what can be added:

  • Unarmored versions of vicious mounts ex: snaplizard, light boar, undermine eel, k’aresh bug thing, etc
  • Faction-themed hearthstone
  • Pets

Then another small thing would be to bring back the Arena Master meta achievement and just remove the 5v5 component. That and also make the achievements for Warbringer/Warbound include doing bg blitz to contribute progress.

Increasing Incentives
PvP should follow what PvE has done with mythic keystones. They have allowed players who earn a rating of 3400 buy a mount from a previous season that used to require 2k so the effective “payment” of not getting it when it was current is doing content at a much higher rating.

PvP has a lot of cool transmog in the form of elite sets that are no longer obtainable. I’m not sure how difficult they were to get in ages past but at the very least all sets from Shadowlands to the Midnight require 1800 don’t seem that hard to get. So at the very least the colors of those elite sets should be obtainable if you gain a higher rating.

This can also be extended to other old PvP rewards like elite weapon transmog or old illusions. I don’t know what the appropriate rating would be to get these different things for PvP but if we are allowing previous 2k keystone mounts to obtainable now at 3.4k then some number could work out.

To note I’m someone that doesn’t focus on pvp with some minor pvp experience while I still play a bit. I have some interests in doing pvp but it’s not in my opinion really worth my time currently moreover I don’t really engage in arenas as much. So this is based on observations but also the small amount of previous experiences. This expansion for example I got 1600 in blitz to get my catalyst early on and did world pvp and leveled in world pvp.

There’s 2 different visions that people promote either making gear less of an issue and removing it, even maybe going as far as scaling anyone to the same level which would let people at all levels play the same content and use pvp to level and truly split pvp from other content. Trying to develop a more unique pvp base and trying to get new players.

The other choice to me which makes more sense is to promote casual pvp. Even rated seemingly see success with blitz and shuffle which are much more casual.

One way to do this is promoting to do random battlegrounds more. Which like rated pvp has issue with people dodging queues but instead to try to get into the same team in the same bgs. One way to reduce this would be to first completely randomize Horde and Alliance but also adding that queue penalty which is being added to rated pvp to reduce people trying to cheese the queue to get into the same matchs/teams.

Like it’s been said crate farming I think had its time and has been completely made a joke with people forming raids. Capping the amount of conquest or rewards you can get from them weekly might be a good idea to reduce their impact and using them to completely skip content for gearing.

But having easy access to conquest is still a good thing hence why I would also make random bgs reward conquest, as much as rated content. Giving random bgs a more valuable place for casual players. I think also making conquest gear hero track instead of champion track would also increase the interest of people that want to pvp but are pve players. It would make pvp into an option to gear up moreover when heroic gear isn’t as heavily valuable anymore.

Same as world content need to reward much more honor, making it so people want to do world pvp all over the world for objectives and control of areas and keep people occupied. We have had recently an addon called Overlord which should be a massive inspiration for world pvp content. Honor should also be something more useful with more mounts but also consumables and crafting making it so people want to keep farming it. I also think a zone like Slayer rise is generally a mistake as first it’s too big, pvp zones thrives more when smaller and when you don’t get access to flying which can be solved in different limited ways.

Another idea which has been talked about is adding a sort of battle pass. A weekly capped journey for pvp which would be about earning a seasonal amount of honor.

Listening feedback also about pvp mmr inflation I think a major mistake has been made as it encourages people to push early and then wait till their mmr gets inflated and then push for their rating once mmr has been inflated enough as that will make it much easier. Inflation to me makes more sense to be used to help people reach the 1800-2100 rating and most likely shouldn’t push your mmr much higher making it so people are always encouraged to keep playing if they want to get higher rating.

I’m not quite sure also about pvp talents, to me they seem like something that complicate a lot pvp while I understand they’re another lever they would also be something that makes it much harder for players to get into pvp when now they have to learn to play their class another way. I think pvp talents make more sense when they’re more general like the 2 first rows in Legion with different damage reduction effects and pvp trinkets cc removal effects. Giving people also a pvp trinket like this does reduce the impact of not wearing one which happens a lot for players freshly engaging with the content and makes the content much less fun in my opinion.
