Good change with the 60 day game time purchase

  1. It’s more like Blizzard wants to lock in the players who traditionally only pay for 1 month and stop playing, i.e. the mass amount of people who only sub for the first month of a new expansion or major patch, then check out until the next patch or expansion… so this is more of a cashgrab to instead get 2 months worth of money from these particular type of temporary players…

Also it’s to also cause a number of these individuals to instead sign up for a subscription and get in a automatically-recurring sub cycle but forget to unsub and end up accidentally resubbing for another month and then feel inclined to play (and end up boosting Blizzard’s player retention figures).

  3. and last but not least, the players in game who sometimes do enough content to raise enough gold to afford a token each month to buy 30 days game time, now won’t be able to, unless they raise double the amount of gold to afford two tokens. This change essentially made the value of a single token less valuable (except to those who are specifically buying shop items for $15 or less, aka not many)

This has absolutely nothing to do with botting. Their subs are tanking due to a lackluster product, and they’re beholden to shareholders. This is corporate greed, pure and simple.

The difference is one I can use Blizzard balance for, and the other I have to give Blizzard my credit/debit card info.

Call me paranoid or whatever you want, I don’t give that information out unless I am absolutely required to.

This was not a change that was needed.

Just buy a debit card from Walmart and or Equivalent store and put money on it…

If this was the real reason for the change, it would only explain eliminating the 30 day option and replacing it with the 60 day option. This rationale would not explain why they also eliminated the 90 day or 180 options, which one would assume botters were not using.

For cows like me that use gold to fund battle.net balance that I then use to buy game time, we are affected because we can’t use battle.net balance for recurring subs, and no longer being able to buy in 90 or 180 day chunks mean we lose the bulk discount aspect (90 day chunks were effectively $13.99/month and 180 day chunks $12.99/month).

In other words, my 180 day game time purchase that used to take 5 tokens bought off the Auction House to have enough battle.net balance to fund it now takes 6 tokens, an increase of 20%, albeit that’s an increase in gold cost not real world dollars. And to add insult to injury, since token demand from buyers off the AH will go up, the token price will also go up. Just look at the price for tokens on it’s dramatic increase since this announcement.

I think the real reason for the change is to encourage more people to buy subscriptions with real money, which we all know increases their bottom line since many people will forget to cancel the recurring charges when they decide to stop playing. Every business that charges via recurring monthly charges knows that this is a significant improvement to their bottom line.

Why would you ever defend yourself having LESS options?

If everything else is the same, I’d prefer to reserve the option to play for a month at a time.

I have looked into those before, you do know that there is a recurring fee for those, regardless of if you use them or not, don’t you?

Forget that, I could pay cash (and not pay more to a third party) for a Blizzard Balance card and buy a month of game time, now I cannot.

Ahhh and there it is. You were using gold to exploit a loophole and get more gametime.

First of all, you can still use your wow token to get 30 days of game time.

Second of all, since it only affects how gold is spent in their game, closing the loophole to exploit the Blizzard balance and shop actually helps the in-game economy. They never intended you to pool up blizzard balance to get the reduced “price” incentive that a subscription gives.

Subscriptions are a way of becoming “sticky” with the customer (a common marketing term). When a customer is more “sticky” they engage with the business more in the form of buying goods and services. So I cant help but infer that one of the reasons for this change is also to increase the stickiness of Blizzard with their player base, and incentivize that stickiness by making the only way to get the discounted subscription model is to subscribe to their service.

Doing it with gold was just a scummy loophole that you were exploiting. Blizzard balance is intended to purchase mounts / pets / and other digital goods, not game time at the subscription discount.
