I’m not super experienced or good, but #2 and #3 are VERY good against most PvE teams. I’m usually levelling something from 20 up in slot #1, and still win.

In the worst case, I’ll grab another level 25, and always win the PvE WQs with something, #2, and #3.

Start by installing an addon called Pet Battle Teams if you are serious about battling and collecting. This will let you create and name individual teams of pets, so all you have to do is select the team you want for whatever particular NPC or dungeon you are doing, without having to remember the best team or where a “leveling” pet can be inserted into battle.

I’ve got about 140 teams set up right now - that’s one for every pet battle master NPC in the game (at least Horde side), and teams for every stage of the Deadmines and Wailing Caverns pet dungeons.

Then, I have indicators next to each name, e.g. “**L”, which means that for that particular team, I can level up a pet in slot three. You can’t do this with all battles, but using Pet Battle Teams, at least I don’t need to remember which ones they are, and which slot works.

IMO, this is really the only way to go. You only need to set up each team once, and then you can forget about it. That is a huge time saver in and of itself, but add to that the removal of “generic” teams in many instances, instead replaced with niche teams to annihilate that particular NPC’s team of pets.

As for “which pets are best”… I get asked that question a lot as I have a pretty extensive collection. To give a reasonable answer though, I need to know what your goals are.

If you want to be able to beat every pet battle NPC there is, win the Celestial tournament, clear the pet battle dungeons, and have a decent chance at PvP wins, then you’re going to need an assortment of a couple hundred different battle pets, at least. Pick a continent, pick a zone and start collecting. All of them.

I could recommend teams like “three iron starlettes”, “howl bomb”, or “three moths”, but it seems silly to make such a recommendation. Sure, a howl bomb team is awesome; I probably have ten or more teams using that configuration. But what’s ten of 140 teams? You need more than just a generic team that will beat a dozen different NPCs.

If you truly only want to beat BfA pet battle NPCs, then three iron startlettes, three moths, or a couple of falcosaurs that have dark claw and swarm will indeed beat a small assortment of the current battles.

If you name a particular NPC you need to beat, I can recommend a team. Other than that, just start from the bottom and work your way up with collecting!

People have done a great job here in listing the most useful pets for PvE.
However a few brilliant wild pets have been left out. I suggest capturing an Emerald Proto-Whelp, an Emperor Crab and a snail, (I use Shimmershell) all in the highest attack breeds available.
