In fact, Alliance even has this in BFA (I was disappointed it wasn’t Jaina’s angels)

Blizz said that the golden eyes lorewise would only be applied to paladins or very devoted priests or other individuals who really like the light. Other belves would keep their green eyes, or, as we can see now, possible purple eyes (if that datamining was correct)
Playpen is in Denial guys, you must forgive them. All of there arguments have always been “SAME RACE” now we know they are not Blood elfs evolved from High elfs but they can’t accept it which is fine.
He may have said BEs are HEs, but do note not all HEs are BEs. He also said BEs have evolved past blue eyes. But made no comments on HEs as a whole. You attributing him to applying BE as the go to name for the race as a whole means nothing, it was specifically about BEs.
I’ve also never seen anyone from Blizzard call HEs expatriates living abroad. It’s very clear they are two separate narratives now. As doubled down today by ions comments on BEs but not all HEs.
Gold eyes are dependant on an individual elf’s faith in the light. Its possible that High Elves could have gold eyes, but it’d be most likely on a paladin/priest type. Most High Elves are mages/rangers
Otherwise blue eyes seems to be Blizz’s way of indicating Alliance/neutral High Elves, with one known exception.
A heavily altered human model, preferably. Blizz has yet to reuse the standard humans. Make them thinner, change their idle stance, short pointy ears… viola Half Elf
Personally I think HEs on Alliance are coming. I’ll still be a BE>HE fan any and every day, but the two narratives are different enough imo to attract two different types of fans. Ones on how BEs have changed, which as seen today was doubled down on. And ones who prefer how BEs used to be as HEs narrative thematic wise.
I’m unsure on Half Elves as anything other than customization options for HEs in the future assuming they are implemented for HE fans.
Also I like your name sir though I think we identify with rival families.
But a belf warlock that infused him or herself with fel and chaotic magic shoud really get golden eyes? Is the connection with the sunwell stronger than his/her connection with the demons/fel?
The point is that Blood Elves, as a population, got exposed to fell, that changed them slightly, but changed them nonetheless. Now, the light aspect of the sunwell seems to “cleanse” the fel on the faithful (Paladins, priests and ostensibly anyone pious enough) and gives them golden eyes.
We can’t be sure this applies to High Elves on the same manner, since there’s a marked difference on how holy interacts with fel and how it -doesn’t seem to- interact with arcane.
Could High Elf paladins and priest get golden eyes? Very likely -we could count Arator in this- but we cannot be sure to the degree this would be, and if it would be comparable to BE’s where holy actively cleanses fel, but we have never heard of holy cleaning arcane.
Blue Eyes is the default eye color for High Elves, green for Blood Elves. Whether either groups devotion to the light leads to comparable rates of golden eyes, it doesn’t really change those default for now. Previously it was mentioned it would take generations for the green tint to fade, but that never rung true for those who… kept using fel.
So generations down the line maybe BE’s will get blue eyes, or golden will usurp it. But that’s faaar down the line, as orcs recovering their natural skin tone is most likely.
It’s your choice to use golden eyes as per their own words.
For example I was conflicted with a Paladin or priest to replace my mage as my new main Horde character, Golden eyes for my character make sense for me. Because my character was almost a priest or a Paladin.
I always said the blue eyes for BEs didn’t make sense to me because if it did they would have added blue eyes at the same time as golden. I don’t see how arcane cleanses Fel, but holy has many times over, and seems to actively like to influence things if it can. Like Xera and Illadin or Yrel now being all crazy Lightforged trying to make others Lightforged.
But golden eyes can make sense for your character if that’s how you feel for your narrative.
I think Green and Golden make sense for BEs. Also maybe red with undead skin tones for dark ranger themes basically applying the same logic of the devs golden eyes statements of if you want to feel your character was an Elf loyalist raised by Sylvanas you can.
And then Blue and Golden for High Elves. With Half Elf customization for those who want it with maybe purple eyes for example implemented there.
Just an idea, maybe both can have purple eyes too though.
this was true before ions ‘evolved’ statement. we know their green glint will fade eventually so the logical conclusion is they will all manifest golden eyes eventually. even the few alliance ones. they all are connected to the same sunwell so it doesnt matter what adjective you identify as thats where the race is going. green/blue will be overridden in time. even feasel said gold is where the race should be lorewise, this kind of syncs with that and danusers comments can probably be looked at for high/blood elves in the current moment where only priests/paladins have them but gold IS the future
Hate to break it to ya, but as this is just a video game. The moment Ion is told by his boss to drum up more players by adding blue eyed alliance high elves, blue eyed alliance high elves will be introduced and the lore be damned. The lore in this game changes like outfits at a fashion show to fit the one color that the upper management truly care about: Dollar Bill Green.
