Give 1 reason why you like Layering

Layering will be far worse in this regard; AT higher levels. With the additional problem of material resource farming.

Sharding can be controlled and prevent material farming, and low populations at high levels.

What I meant was literally not ending up on a dead server. Thus you ended up wasting your time having to reroll.

I like layering because it will keep me from ending up on a graveyard realm.

So will sharding…

Feel free to elaborate on how both Sharding and Layering will prevent dead servers then. Maybe you know something I don’t.

So will sharding…

Not necessarily. If sharding still only allows for a standard 3k realm cap it does nothing to solve the issue of tourists quitting the game. Layering does.

Sure.

Classic launches with 20 servers, each with a 3k cap. Each realm is packed and full. Two months later 60% of people have quit (tourists) affecting each realm differently. Some of them have experienced severe population declines, and some have been relatively unaffected. Result is dead realms, possibly half of them, maybe less.

With Layering:
Classic launches with 9 realms, each capable of layering to simulate a 3k server.
As tourists quit, layers can be merged into each other so that when the tourists are gone, there are no dead realms. Instead just 9 realms with a healthy population.

Sharding is far worse, sharding isn’t even done by zone is done by area within the zone. You could literately be walking to a resource node and you get put into a different shard with no resource node there.

Also exploits still exist within shards, people switch shards all the time in retail to hunt rares.

Says who? Server pop size has nothing to do with layering or sharding…

The fact that they will allow more people to play on a realm decrees the chance that realms will die… Sharding is a scalpel Layering is a million pound hammer

Sharding can be set to an area as large or small as they want it to be set…

Layering is literally sharding…

They can set the sharding to Northsire, Westfall, STV exc… removing the shard phasing in the middle of a zone…

This doesn’t answer my question. You just used an analogy to dodge the question. Explain how Sharding will prevent a dead server and how Layering will prevent a dead server.

No six hours queues.
No slide shows.
No disconnects.

Layering is sharding that is capped with the ability to access it is only via invites. Sharding isn’t that, it’s dynamic .

Please show me a link that they’re able to have pinpoint sharding because retail has never had this.

Both increase the level of players on a given server…

This causes bad launches and inability to have an enjoyable game play experiance.

Add to that the assumption that many people will be tourists…

The implement a system that can help provide a smooth launch experience and prevent servers from dying when people quit playing.

Both sharding and layering do this… one is a precise tool the other a blunt object.

Give 1 reason why you like Layering

I don’t. I just think it’s a necessary evil we’ll have to deal with for the first little while until either the tourists all leave or Phase 2 launches.

Layering is not “new technology”. It is sharding on a global scale. That scale can be set as large or small as they want…

Small = Sharding
Large = Layering

Medium = Zone specific sharding

Still doesn’t answer how they help with preventing dead servers. You sure you know what you are talking about? :thinking: I mean, if you need to do some research to give a good answer, I won’t stop you.

Check my earlier reply if you want to see how layering prevents dead servers.

Sharding does not do this. It prevents competition issues (too many players, not enough mobs) or load issues (too many players in a zone for the server to handle). It’s not meant to do anything for population.

Why would they shard a 3k server? Your argument assumes they won’t just bumb the cap up to 9k and shard.

Why not just shard 1-30 and then let people onto one layer for all the contested zones?

Because the game world isn’t designed for 9k players. Servers capping at 3k was a conscious decision by Blizz.

Yes, because 4,000 people all trying to level though STV at the same time will definitely not be a problem…maybe I’ll go to another zone…hrm 4,000 people in this one too.

We should get rid of Layering in dungeons and raids too. No reason people should be in a different version of the same place with a layer separating them. It’s not like the number of people the area was designed for makes any difference, it’ll be fine and people will have a better experience when not separated.
