Getting out of the Maw

Am I the only one super confused on how all these beings are getting out of the maw?

I was under the impression the only people who can get out are those who resonate with that waystone or people connected to them… so how is anduin getting out? How are all these others being just walking back and forth from the maw with no problems? Is anyone else confused about this?

I think Sylvanas is technically a maw walker as well, and the val’kyr can just fly out.

As for why the covenant people start showing up, that’s actually why you set up the waystone in Korthia in the first place. Without it, anybody trying to join you would get trapped on the other side, and you give them the go-ahead to storm the maw once it’s running.

We open a path for the covenants in the Korthia intro but when one of Odyn’s val’kyr just casually flew us from the Maw to Skyhold I was so confused.

I also remember some Mawsworn inexplicably being able to open a portal and drag Kel’thuzad through at the end of the Venthyr campaign.

Anduin also doesnt make sense considering he explicitly couldn’t activate the way gate way back in the Maw intro. Only the player could.

Mawsworn can fly through the torn open Veil into Azeroth so logically same can be done by the Valkyr.

Anything that can fly can fly out of the Maw back into Azeroth.

Furthermore the Mawsworn can also enter the Rift/Realm of Shadows/Spirit Realm from the Maw’s side of things though not Azeroth despite having access to it’s side of the Rift.

Kel’Thuzad’s job during that mission was to find a way for the Mawsworn to exit the Maw into the Shadowlands.

He found a way and thus the Jailer now has the means to send Mawsworn into the Shadowlands at will. He himself still can’t escape the Maw so he is empowering the place with Anima so that it can envelop Oribos so that he can attack the Arbiter himself!

Consistency, in MY WARCRAFT?!

Its less likely than you think.

I think the idea is just generally: if you are a deity/pseudo-deity with respectable command over Death magic—or you serve such a being who shares their power with you—then you can bypass the need to be the Maw Walker via brute force.

  • The Mawsworn serve under Zovaal, who can clearly break people out of the Maw. Same goes for Kel’thuzad and Anduin.
  • The Val’kyr serve Odyn, who presumably has some power or sway over the Shadowlands/Death magic via his eye deal thing.
  • It’s implied that people like Jaina who escape do so due to their direct proximity with the PC and their connection to the waygates.

All of this is consistent with there being a singular Maw Walker, who’s ability to open the Waygate is tied to holding the Heart of Azeroth (as implied by the Korthian attendant who analyzes your anima, which really deserved its own thread).
