Show me that fake items exist in game.
You’re fine. I gave away a bunch of giftwrapped Steelbound Harnesses during Xmas last year. He was probably just trying to do something nice.
I’ve had strangers give me valuable items on a whim, and I’ve given away two reins of Poseidus , 4 Vial of the Sands and a bunch of other mounts and pets.
Reins of Posiedus is easy to farm these days, so a person having lots is no indication of malfeasance. The price you see them up for on auction is not proof they are actually selling. I post ~1000 auctions each week, and only sell 5-10% of my items. Someone could well have tired of posting mounts that were rarely selling, and if that person has a kind heart -
It’s probable you just got lucky.
The mount is simply a lot easier to obtain now. The spawn rate increased, and he can be multi-tagged. So, one seahorse can drop multiple seahorses now. He honestly could use it as a farming method.
Also, with the rare mount discord, they will often times have someone who finds the seahorse and announce it. They will invite multiple people to come and “tag” it, and then everyone gets the drop. Poseidus is worth like 5-10k on my server.
I left a server recently, and bought a ton of mounts. The ‘Subdued Sea Horse’ (I don’t know if that the mount you are talking about, but using it as an example.)was going for about $300 on the server that I left. They could have gotten the mounts from a crappy low pop server like I was on and loaded up the mounts to take and sell later.
Or, they could just farm mounts. I’ve done that sometimes during the holidays. I get up a bunch of holiday mounts and put them on the AH.
I wouldn’t think much of it, some people are just rich enough to give out that stuff np. The worst thing that could happen is them being investigated and any mounts from them being removed. Blizzard isn’t out to punish people that are clearly innocent. The best thing that could happen is Blizzard investigating them and finding them all legit and someone was being generous
