General Healer Advice

So, how do you all deal with the backlash that comes from the back to back wipes in a Mythic+ group that eventually lead to the run ending and remaining incomplete? Because I feel like the experience I’ve had as a healer has been nothing but this in Mythic+ and it’s seriously making me consider switching back to DPS as I don’t want to subject myself to this.

I mostly just ignore them or put my own word in. And then we usually just finish the key without timing it. I avoid being too dramatic cause I generally want to complete the key timed or not. If people leave then you disband and move on. If you keep wiping to people messing stuff up then maybe it’s best to end it there. I’ve slogged through keys way over the timer but I understand that many people won’t.

The best way to deal with it is to try to run with guild players whenever possible. So then it won’t happen.

My friend runs with elitism helper. All avoidable damage taken is listed so no one can say it was his fault. At the end of the run, there’s a leader board of who did the best mechanically.

I’ve had some really demoralizing runs that had multitudes of problems. I blamed myself for not healing well, even though others made mistakes as well.

The best remedy I have found for that is to simply queue for another dungeon. When I did that, it often went really well and was a huge confidence boost. My experience has been that toxic groups are actually pretty rare, and if you run into one, there’s a really high chance that the next group won’t be toxic.

This data is available without making assumptions via details in the damage taken and the damage taken by spell modules

Elitism helper will fail to accommodate for stuff like being a warlock\dh who can self heal to shrug off chip damage, as well as tanking various effects to ensure a priority target (especially void emissary) dies or a kick on a noob standing inside of going bananas gets landed

It’s better than nothing, but learning to actually use the information is better still

Usually when people strategically eat avoidable damage like that, it’s nowhere near the amount being taken by people who are just idiots.

Like, kicking bananas (have fun with that, Google) to save someone standing in it means the other person is already standing in it and likely has been all run. The intervening player usually isn’t the one berating the healer for it either.

It’s always good to be aware that there is sometimes a reason to take avoidable damage, but for the most part that addon will do a good job of revealing “the problem”.

that’s true, that’s why i say it’s better than nothing, but you could also just level up from having the awareness to personally avoid damage, into having the awareness to either just notice things happening to your group’s character models and hp bars or to leaf through details yourself

No matter dungeon, raid, etc. Healers are always first to blame, skada reveals quite a bit but a actual competent group knows that it’s not the healers fault. I have even had tanks tell me it was their bad for not using a cd. Not all groups are like that but dps love to blame the healer for them dieing

Why do you care what other people think? In general healers will always have spots in Mythic+'s. It is so easy to rank up as a healer, I basically went form having run zero Mythic +'s to running 10’s and 11’s in pugs in a span of 3 weeks.

What I have found is that in general you cannot save people from being dumb and refusing to do mechanics in higher keys. I have a simple credo: help complete the key no matter what, if the tanks, dps want to leave, its on them. I would say 10% of the failed keys I’ve experienced over the past few weeks was due to something I did (not properly hiding from void-touched or being out of position on a boss mechanic or somesuch) and 90% was due to DPs not properly doing mechanics or refusing to use the stun/interrupt key.

Here’s the thing: healers really aren’t the thing that will make or break a run. As long as you don’t stand in bad and keep the tank up while throwing out off heals not much more that you can do (as a mistweaver I can throw in an occasional stun/ring of peace interrupt). You aren’t really that essential, much more hinges on the dps classes being decent.

I’ve had relatively few folks rage at me. And the folks who do are to a one people who didn;t use interrupts or defensive cooldowns and refused to do mechanics. Which would explain why no one invites them to higher level keys. /shrug

Healers are very essential unless you’re running BDK/Ret/Ret/Balance/Balance (BDK + Quad Balance?) and pulling one pack at a time.

You’re there to heal, yeah, but if there’s nothing to heal you should be pumping damage as hard as you can. This is far better than the hilarious comps I mentioned above.

This is the truest thing I’ve read on the forums today. I always say that in mythic+, EVERYONE IS RESPONSIBLE for their own HP bars. Good players learn this early on, and try to minimize the damage they take. They move better, interrupt dangerous spells, are quick to use their HP pots/personals/lock rocks, and have good heads-up awareness for the emissaries on the map.

If the healer doesn’t have to burst heal for the entire dungeon, 1) that healer is contributing meaningfully to DPS, 2) has the mana to burst when needed, and 3) doesn’t need to stop and drink in a way that will impact the run.

So don’t take it personally. Just keep practicing, you’ll get it. <3

I really think players would perform better overall if they tried out all the roles in a dungeon and raid.

Heal a few dungeons and see how often you are going oom because someone won’t stop standing in bad and you just may find yourself paying a bit more attention when you are dpsing.

Try tanking and get frustrated at how often players are pulling ahead of you or otherwise messing up your pulls and you may find yourself paying a bit more attention and not doing such things.

Most tanks/healers I know have also dps’ed, but I know many healers that could use the reminder to use their stuns/interrupts on mobs when the dps may be on cd and such as well.

This. Best way to get better at the game is to play other roles. You will learn things.

blood death knight and 4 balance druids sounds OP lol you could even do 4 bear taunts in a bad situation

Thanks! I try to dps and use my group stun when I can, and that is definitely an area I am looking to improve. The problem is when I do that it tends to split my attention so if someone starts dying I may not catch it in time.

The difference in a run between good dps and bad dps is astounding. In a good dps run I can spend a lot more time doing other stuff (stuns, interrupts, dps). In a bad dps run if I take 2 seconds to focus on another activity I risk losing someone. Especially if there are a lot of ground effects to avoid often times I find myself forced to burst heal to keep everyone up.

Are we talking in pugs or in an actual group? I healed 100% in Legion m+ and honestly aside from specific unavoidable mechanics most of the wipes come from DPS getting hit by avoidable damage. I was doing 22 keys last season that were lightyears easier than 15’s because the DPS were better players.

As far as healing goes, are you owning your role and talking to your group about when to use defensives/pots/healthstones/etc? For example, I have a buddy that I raid with who wants to push keys, but he doesn’t put in the effort to go the extra mile and really own his role. All of the coordination of the run comes from myself (the tank) and one of our DPS.

We were doing 16 underrot last week on tyrannical… We wiped because he couldn’t keep up on the tantrums… He was all bent out of shape because the wipes fell on his unability to heal through it. After the key was scuffed and we were going back for our THIRD attempt I finally just spoke up and said, personal CD’s on tantrum 1, tranq on tantrum 2, health pots on tantrum 3, and then start the rotation over. We killed it the next pull without lust.

So long as you are doing your part and owning your responsibility the rest of the ‘blame’ falls on the other players.

The good thing about being a healer, is when the the DPS stands in the Sanguine, dies, and blames the healer, we can leave the party, queue for a new key and get insta invited.

I obviously don’t make mistakes, so I like to jump straight to calling out people for theirs.
