I know I am not going to be good in arena as I was never good in BGs. Friend and I are just looking o have some fun and try something different. Should we get the best PVP gear we can or run in our PVE gear which will be better iLevel.

Doesn’t really matter since you will be roflstomped by the arena sweats that have been playing it since day one that are not only turbo geared but also 9 out of 10 times they are also running a god comp so you wont ever have fun in Arena unless you become a meta slave
Welcome to arenas!! Hopefully the most fun you‘ll have on the game. And don‘t listen to the other guy, there are plenty of people who start quickly and end up playing really well. It definitely does take a bit to get used to it if you never have before and I recommend starting with 2s.
I think that PvP gear will be very helpful, but it depends on the comp you run. Generally in all of the earlier expansions you ran a lot of pve gear but around cata/mop the game transitioned to mostly/exclusively PvP gear for arenas.
The first of two advantages is the PvP power, which increases damage done to players. Mop has a high base resilience and the stat isn’t on many pieces of gear (just trinkets) doesn’t really minimize the damage you take by much.
The second is ilvl. Pve generally has higher ilvl, but they‘ve artificially lowered the ilvl of pve pieces in instanced PvP. So arena gear may be much higher ilvl than pve gear; but your pve gear may be higher than honor gear. I haven’t played mop in a bit so I don‘t know the current state.
You can get the crafted blue PVP gear from the AH for pretty cheap, and a few Wintergrasps will get you two honor trinkets. I would get at least that much to start.
I am bad at arena, but I have a blast running 2s for laughs. Queues are quick and even losing half your matches, you can get Conquest gear relatively quickly. Once you hit a certain level of Conquest for the week, you get a buff (for all characters) that doubles the gains.
Your PVE gear will always be higher ilvl, and probably significantly so, but PVP power makes a big difference, and I believe ilvl gets scaled down to a max of 496 (498 for weapons) in arena anyway, as that’s the level of the Conquest gear. Or it’s supposed to be scaled down. Obviously nobody is fixing bugs, so.
A PvP weapon and two trinkets would help greatly, but you can probably jump in as is. If your stacked on valor points, then you can trade 250 valor for 250 conquest points in Stormwind.
Run Wintergrasp once every 3 hours to buy both honor trinkets and then trade valor to get your conquest weapon.
There are indeed sweats, or smurfs, hanging around 1900mmr. There’s very few queues happening beyond 2k mmr because the top end are on alts harassing the lower end.
Just have fun and don’t worry about rating so much.
