Take a look at any flow charts/infographs for gaming controllers. Current console controllers got their designs from their predecessors, with Xbox getting their design from the Dreamcast. Keep going and it goes back to Nintendo setting those standards. Prior to them, controllers were mostly standalone joysticks.
