Game suddenly lags out, but does not DC and ports me to Oribos after attempting to log back in

This is an issue i’ve had for a while, and opened a few tickets for that never reached a real resolution. It seems to be happening to more people now though, so i’m going to make another post about it.

During dungeons and raids the game will randomly lag out like its about to disconnect me, only it doesn’t. Chat still works, so I know that a connection to the server is still being made, but I cannot cast spells or abilities, and my character appears to standing still to other players. I’ve stayed in this state for over an hour (for science), and the game just sits there, never catching back up or DCing me completely. The strange part happens after I alt f4 and try logging back in though.

Upon trying to log back in I am greeted with a LOOONG loading screen. It sits at around 3/4 full for 2-3 minutes. Sometimes it kicks me back to the character select screen with a “World Server Down” error. If it successfully manages to log me back in, I usually find myself suddenly ported to Oribos. Obviously this is a problem if I was in the middle of running an M+. If there is a warlock in the group and they attempt to summon me back, i’m greeted with a “Transfer Aborted: Instance not found” error.

This has been happening to my shaman since 9.1 and is now starting to happen to my other characters within the past week. The tickets i’ve opened have had me try a plethora of things to fix, but none solve the problem:

  • Repairing the game
  • Running without addons
  • Resetting/Defaulting my cvars
  • Reinstalling the game
  • Reinstalling the game on a different drive
  • Updating drivers
  • Changing out my modem
  • Running wired instead of wireless
  • Running the game as admin
  • Renaming my character
  • Reinstalling windows

I’ve tried everything short of chucking out my current PC and building a new one.

This is a lot of info to digest. All we need is a WinMTR test to look at connection data.

Are you on Spectrum? There are some major lag spikes with them that doesn’t affect only Blizzard games, but all connections.

I am on Spectrum, but for the longest time this issue would ONLY impact my shaman. Both my DK and my Hunter were completely unaffected by this until very recently. A simple drop in connection also doesn’t really explain being dumped in Oribos upon logging back in unless the game has serious error handling issues.

I will play a few dungeons and try to capture a decent test.

Another strange detail about the issue, is that the Oribos dump depends on which dungeon i’m in. If i’m running ToP or DoS and the issue occurs I do not get ported to Oribos upon logging back in, whereas any other dungeon I do. No idea if this information helps, but who knows.

Hey there Xlink,

That is a lot of troubleshooting done and considering the amount of time this as been occurring, I’m thinking it’s a network equipment problem. Those Transfer Aborted: Instance Not Found errors are usually due to add-ons, damaged files, interfering programs, or a connection problem. Since you’ve done most everything else to narrow this down, the next step would be to focus on the way you connect.

If you have a separate router and modem, try bypassing the router entirely and connect the computer to the modem with an ethernet cable.

If it’s a combo device, then that isn’t possible. If you can’t bypass the router or see no difference with doing so, then try using an alternative connection method like a neighbor’s or friend’s wifi. Using a mobile hotspot or tether can also work for testing purposes when you see that error. If you can connect while on that alternative network but not on your normal network, then you’ll want to talk to your ISP about the equipment being used. A factory reset of the devices or even replacement may be in order.

I do have a hotspot I can try, but from 9.1 up until about a week ago the problem literally only happened on a single character. If it was a broader network issue the problem would have been present across all my characters indiscriminately.

As for addons, all my characters use the same ones. I initially thought the problem was a specific weakaura on my Shaman that used some custom code, but even disabling all addons did not resolve the issue.

I did several keys on my hunter last night after posting but the issue did not occur, i’ll try my Shaman since that is the character that has traditionally seen the problem. Will play on my regular network first to capture a winMTR with that equipment, then with hotspot.

Alright, think I got a some good tests with my regular wired network equipment. Not seeing any packet loss on the west coast server, and central server just kind of never completes the trace route no matter what.
