I’ve been having a huge issue with freezes and crashes lately and have yet to figure out what is causing the issue. What happens is my game will randomly freeze for 5-10 seconds. Then when it comes back I can see all models and textures are being reloaded. I’ve also noticed that my VRAM will dip and jump back up as if it is reloading all game assets. Sometimes the game will crash instead of unfreezing or will crash later. It seems to happen in instances the vast majority of the time.
I’ve tried disabling addons bit by bit and even disabling all addons but the crash still occurs. So far I’m not sure what is causing the issue.
I’ve updated GPU drivers, Windows 11 is up to date, and I’ve even tried changing my monitors refresh rate to be lower, none of them have changed anything.
For future reference, you need to remove them and their configuration files from the directory to test for issues.
You need to free up 15% space on drives C and D so their page files work properly.
Here are your primary errors:
Problem signature:
P1: RECentralService.exe
A lot of users of this software say Windows crashes when it stops working. Sounds suspicious to me, would look for an alternative if it’s something you need.
Problem signature:
P1: Microsoft.XboxGamingOverlay
Xbox overlay is known for causing issues with games.
Event Name: AppHangTransient
Response: Not available
Cab Id: 0
Problem signature:
P1: Wow.exe
This is a memory error for WoW and could be due to the page file space, RAM, or other lack of system resources.
Beyond that, check for overheating with HWMonitor. Don’t use a “temperature monitor display” since that will show an average and not heat spikes.
I’ll try removing all of my AddOn config files as well. I backed everything up just in case already.
I have nearly 300 GB free on my C drive and 100+ on my D drive. The page file should only be set to my C drive. I recently tried changing it as well to try and fix the crashes. It was being automatically managed by Windows but didn’t show which drive was being used, so I set it to my C drive with an initial size of 9Gb and max of 32GB. I also have 64 GB of ram.
I’ll also try disabling any overlays, but will probably leave those for last. If Shadowplay or the Xbox overlay is causing issues that would suck as I use both for games.
Also I’ve been using HWiNFO and have seen no issues with my temps. The only thing I noticed was the spike in CPU usage when the game froze and the huge dip in vram usage.
Feel free to research my recommendation on your own. The most common recommendation is actually 20% free space on SSDs, a higher requirement than HDDs. Keep in mind your drives are 2048GB and 1024GB, not the values listed by the Windows drive manager, since it doesn’t count some of the space used by Windows management.
You should leave it automatically managed by Windows.
Why though? They toggle on and off easily. No sense doing complicated stuff over these simple changes.
I’m pretty sure that my graphics driver is crashing during it. In the Windows Event Viewer under
Windows Logs → System. I saw that I had events for nvlddmkm that happened at the same time as my crashes.
I haven’t found a complete solution, but I think I’ve at least stopped the crash from happening. Here’s everything I did:
Download DDU and your latest driver
Boot into safe mode
Launch DDU and keep all the default options selected
Select your GPU in the drop down and confirm it is your GPU
Run DDU to remove the drivers and select the option to reboot
After the reboot finishes reinstall your drivers
After that I was still having issues so I looked and found a bios update for my motherboard. I installed that and so far things have been better. Though now an older issue has popped up where my screen will randomly go black for a second. As well as the game seems to still randomly freeze, but only for a second or so. I’ve also noticed the game will sometimes randomly reload assets still, but it does it very fast and doesn’t crash my game.
If I keep having issues I’ll probably do similar steps with DDU but follow this thread here from Reddit. The step for “Device Installation Settings” seems very important before booting into safe mode and running DDU. It seems to prevent Windows from installing its built in driver your your Nvidida GPU. Which I think is causing conflicts with the fresh driver install.
After doing my fresh driver install I noticed the nvlddmkm.sys file is version 30.0.15.1179 which is out of date, but my driver version was the current 545.84 version. So I think I might have to do the steps in that Reddit thread to do a full fresh install and so might you if this is the same issue you are having.
I’ve had very similar events occur when RAM usage/memory utilization is >99%
Are you running Chrome, Firefox or any other background apps that eat memory?
Yeah I’m running Firefox and discord in the background. I’ve noticed the crash seems to happen once my ram uses reaches about the 50% mark. So I can mainly avoid it by having fewer tabs open. But the crash almost always happens eventually if I start to stream. I’m also very sure my ram is ok as I ran memtest86 for nearly 10 hours and got 5 passes.
After I did the bios update things were fine for a day, but it went back to crashing. I’m going to try to revert to an older driver version. Currently it seems 537.58 is the most stable so I’ll try that and see how it all goes.
Downgrading my Nvidia driver to version 537.58 fixed my issue. I’m no longer getting crashes. It was due to the nvlddmkm error and is a known issue with recent driver versions.
Though sadly now I have an old issue that was fixed by newer driver versions, where my screen will go black for a second. It only really happens while I’m alt tabbed so not a big deal. Plus I’d much rather have that happen than the game freezing and crashing on me at least once a day.
I’m about to try this myself and see if it works, I’ve been having this issue since probably late October. I’m HOPING this works as the random freezing and reloading is making it very difficult to push any M+ or raid.
