I opened the forum last night and saw I was on a different character than earlier in the day. I’ve posted on the same character for months, maybe a year. I tried to change back, but that character no longer is on the menu to select. I logged into that character in the game with no issue.
Today, still not there.
I’ve poked around some more. It seems to be completely random whether a character is on the forum menu. Some recently played characters are not. Some characters on expired accounts are on that menu, and some are not.

Just happened to me as well, my main is not to be found on the forum Character select menu and posting was randomly changed to an alt I haven’t played in like forever.
I think it’s random which alt it is changed to. I have been playing this character recently. I have many characters I haven’t logged into lately. There doesn’t seem to be a pattern.
UPDATE: I just tried typing the name of the character I usually post on in the filter box, and it showed up in the list and I could select it.
Same problem here. Most of my characters have disappeared from the list. It seems the more I played a character the less likely it will show up. Most of the characters I have available haven’t been played in at least six months.
Oh, look. I just got bumped to yet another different character, this one a Classic character I haven’t played in a few months.
Edit to add: just checked my forum character options list. I now see only 12 characters, all classic ones.
I’m unable to post on any of my retail characters now.
They must be doing this to troll us. I can’t imagine any legitimate reason why they would have done this.
My guess is they are implementing the forum changes where all of our characters forum posts are tied together (already the case for MVP’s) and this is a side effect. Because I still see any new updates on my other posts while on this character.
They’ve been phasing that in for several days.
Nope, my account has been like that for over six months now, and I am having random characters being chosen without any input from me.
That sounds like there might be something different about your account than ours.
I’m now able to use my preferred Retail Character to post now.
Same with me. I am on an Oceanic toon at the moment , my US character Mortnoctis disappeared off the planet.
After I read logging out from the forum then logging back into it the problem stopped happening for me.
