Flying & riding in the 9.0 level squish (1-50)

Has Blizzard made any official statement about when riding and flying will be unlocked in the new 1-50 level design for 9.0?

The only official mention I saw was “we dont know yet”

Considering that Flying is unlocked at 60 currently my guess would be somewhere around level 25-30

but they might ended up doing it higher

Once again Blizzard hides behind their ominously trademarked phrases “wait and see” or “soon”

I’m guessing lvl 50, max level for each of the old expansions. Since aside from Cata, all the old expansions flight was purchasable originally at max.

I’d like to see flying available when you can first enter Cata zones (which sounds like it’ll be level 10). I’m not sure if it’s even possible to do Deepholm questing without flight. Mt. Hyjal is annoyingly vertical and I’d hate to quest there without flight; that’s also one of the first Cata zones with the other one being underwater (Vashj’ir).

we aren’t even in alpha yet… no word so far. With the squish and all old content available i wonder if older pathfinders will go bye bye.

Agreed. Plus you can’t forget Stormpeaks and Icecrown in Northrend which were both designed around flying as well. (if I recall, flight was available at…78? or something, wasn’t it?)

Surely they wouldn’t restrict flight until level 50 because as Taco pointed out, paired with what I said, that’d completely kill certain zones due to how they were designed. I don’t see them making flight available as low as level 10 but I could see it being around 20 or so. If it’s much higher than that then it will be completely pointless to quest through half the expansions given the zone and quest design, especially Cataclysm and WotLK stuff.

To be honest, I’m working on Loremaster right now and a LOT of the older (pre-pathfinder) quest chains are designed in a way that would work with flight while leveling, because you’re generally getting quests in groups of “kill one big guy, also kill some little guys, also collect some stuff”. So the bugaboo of “but people will just land on their objective and then fly away without fighting any of our precious, precious trash” has already been defeated via quest design.

It would be weird jumping from one expansion content to another freely where half the time you can fly and the other half you cannot. It would skew where new players go after their first. Might be a good idea to sideline pathfinder in old content and make them feats of strength or legacy.

I’m not sure about Wrath’s level for flying in the expansion. (it might have been 80 with gold). But there were quest chains in Stormpeaks that ‘gave’ the player a flying mount at level 78. Most of the people I played with at the time, just kept the mount and did not complete the quest chain until after they hit level cap in Wrath.

Cold weather flying was available at level 77 (originally) cost 1000g.

Yes. 9.2 just like 8.2 in BfA and just like 7.2 in Legion. See a pattern?

Icyviens had a discussion on this back in November, when the topic first came out. Their suggestion was that WoD, Legion, and BfA should lose their grinding pathfinder, and that a simple gold price at a certain level be re-introduced to the game. (TBC, Wrath, Cata, and MoP all had level cap and gold as the requirement from flying)

I don’t except the new level requirement to be higher than 30 since current level 60s (Squish 25-30) can fly now. I am really interested on how they will handle the Legacy pathfinder zones. I expect we will start getting an idea as we head into the Spring months.

Well if you have the handy dandy chauffeured bike, I would say level 1. If not I would say level 10 when you leave the starting zone you would be able to ride and maybe even fly, because of Cata. They could make riding at level 5 so for some of the start zone you still would have to walk, then could ride. To only open up flight at level 10 so if you chose Cata as your leveling xpac you could fly right away. No other xpac requires flight from the start or was designed with it in mind at the start.

Other than that, there is no word on it. Its a wait n see thing.

I guess it will be 10 (60% riding), 20 (100%), 30 (150% flying), 40 (180%), 50 (210%).

They have to let you fly at 10 because Deepholm needs flight. They will immediately break their promise of letting you quest in any expansion zone to 50 if they don’t let you fly.
