Well, I know what the response to all those epic ideas would be:
“We are giving you Classic servers!”
No flight there, boys and girls, grinding till it runs out of your ears, and all the social interplay in the old fashioned way you could hope for (and probably won’t get because, yknow, it isn’t 2005 anymore, Toto).
This is all making me feel old. I need coffee. I shall “fly away” and get me some. Behave, young Pandaren.
Yeah, it’s been like 10 years since Wrath…longer? Don’t remember the level numbers but I remember paying a lot A LOT for flying for all my lousy scrub alts so they could go pick flowers and smash rocks (running across the Icecrown floor on a ground mount = guaranteed dead from the giant fuglies.)
Point is, it’s either level each char to max +lots of gold vs. pathfinder. Middle ground.
You’ll find that when Blizzard says compromise or middle ground, what they REALLY mean is; “We’ll do what we want, and unless literally millions of you quit over it, thus angering the share holders, there is nothing you can do about it.”
The only reason we get flying at all is because of the aforementioned millions of people unsubscribing.
If I was designing flying, I would bring back the ability to buy flying for gold (with a substantially higher price) in addition to pathfinder. I also believe pathfinder should not have any time gating or rep requirements. Give players the choice of whether to spend a lot of gold on flying or get it for free via the exploration and questing required for the achievements.
Doing an achievement and content to unlock flight… fine. I actually like Pathfinder and the fact the achievement unlocks it across my alts better than just buying it for gold like we did before.
But, the freaking god awful time gate does not make it feel like a reward or good when it’s finally done.
It feels like a festering sore and boil that’s finally been washed out and might actually get the chance to heal in time as you forget how much of an irritation lack of flight was the LACK that ruining game immersion, and you can finally stop thinking about how much of a bunch of jerks and things I can’t say on the forums here without risking a temp ban the Blizzard Devs in charge of that time gate were for half a freaking expansion.
But running down the same road, hitting the same FP, or blowing your whistle for 150th time is immersive. It’s fun! Ion decided that for you! Fun!
They’re trying to bring the real world monotony of a commute to the game. Going to opposite direction from fantasy. A good dose of reality to go with your cartoony graphics.
A compromise involves an open dialogue two ways. Bean counters forced Blizz to keep flying while Blizz can’t design the game with flying in mind. Sad that the bean counters of Activision-Blizzard stepped in to save one of the crown jewels of this game.
The three crown jewels of this game:
Flying
Progression and vendor Gearing
Fast and fluid combat and classes
All three have been thrown in the trash with the current dev team.
Yeah, druid flower pickers got a lot of hate, especially Tauren druids cuz racial is quicker gathering + flight form perk. A lot of the gold farmers were cow druids back in the day…still are today I think.
But we have the “interact with target” leather buff and the no-daze BS or tank buff now so everyone is almost as good a flower picker as a druid.
Pathfinder 1 is fine, though dreading part 2, and also annoyed at how long it has taken for flight to be implemented. Really should have been in months ago.
It isn’t middle ground by any means, but whatever, it is their game. They’ll do what they want regardless of what the community has repeatedly expressed. They’ve made that very clear.
Pathfinder is fine, but instead of waiting two entire content patches later for it to be unlocked, it should be turned on all at once in 8.1 (OR better yet, 8.0.5) for everyone who completes it. This waiting half an expansion and completing multiple parts to unlock something that should be immediately obtainable is ridiculous–and it’s getting real, real old.
