I forget which song he wrote but he made one during Shadowbringers I wanna say while he was hospitalized battling cancer. That’s dedication to your craft.
Anyone who thinks WoW’s music is even in the same ballpark as FFXIV’s is huffing some serious copium. FFXIV’s boss music is just ludicrously good. I cant even express in words just how well FFXIV’s soundtrack is put together. FFXIV’s music director Soken is an absolute monster at making music. Dude makes banger after banger after banger like its nothing.
FFXIV has some incredible boss themes to get you hyped up to fight the Big Bad you’ve been chasing for the past forever. Every single Trial boss has their own unique theme, and most of them have more than one theme as they switch between phases. If you dont care about spoilers for FFXIV, look up the tracks for Insanity, With Hearts Aligned, Maker’s Ruin, and Revenge Twofold, just as some samples. This is what FFXIV delivers all the time.
As for people who are like “Well WoW has better background music!” you’re wrong again. What good background music or zone music can you hum the beat to right now? Grizzly Hills maybe? The Classic Barrens or Dun Morogh theme? I like WoW’s music, dont get me wrong, but there’s a world of difference between Storm Peaks’ theme and (spoilers again if you look them up) Neath Dark Waters, Sands of Amber, Against the Wind, Solid, and even the good ol’ Waking Sands theme. Again, these are in pretty close to every zone.
Soken is a champion when it comes to making soundtracks. WoW’s music team has always been consistently good, but Soken is consistently legendary. Unrelated, but he’s also got pretty bad cancer, which I can only assume means that God decided that Soken had given us the goods for long enough and now wants Soken up in heaven banging out some tunes for the Big G himself, as he deserves.
There’s an argument fkr both. WoW relies more on ambience with its soundtracks. Part of the reason why everyone seems to love Grizzly Hills is its music (the zone is overrated to me but opinions is opinions)
But FF14 definitely wins when it comes to pace setting music. Whether it’s music that helps set the tone of a storybeat, or action music to get the adrenaline flowing in a boss fight, FF14 does that music almost flawlessly.
WoW has since been trying to get in on the boss music, but most of the time it just ends up being a slightly remixed version of the raid background music, which is more often than not also an atmospheric track, which ends up making for… ok boss music, but not great.
And, me personally, I am a sucker for great boss music.
In regards to the cancer, recent news is that it’s in remission, but we should always watch out if it comes back
He’s on the winning battle on that front, last we heard. He’s too young to go, and he’s touched so many with his music
Music is subjective. Don’t be cringe.
But Blizzard, especially WoW, is known for having amazing music.
It sounds like bad early 2000’s punk rock.
Is there a part of this song specifically you think is particularly good?
Because this is incredibly mediocre so far.
Alrighty then
O_o
Are you trying to imply that by me stating music is subjective… I can not have an opinion…?
sub·jec·tive
based on or influenced by personal feelings, tastes, or opinions.
From what i read, it was MOST of the entire expac tracks.
There’s no competition. Sokken is a literal godly composer and FF14 has the best soundtrack of any game. WoW’s is dry and bare.
Of all the things that the cultists insist FF14 does better, they never bring up the OST.
FF14 pretty much has the best OST in gaming.
Glamour is a hell of a lot better, and I will die on that road. The storage of it sucks though. I want the looks of FF armor/clothing with the storage system of WoW.
One can dream
Looking at both games objectively I think its actually hard to compare the soundtracks; many tracks in FFXIV come from earlier IP games while most of the soundtracks in WoW originate in WoW outside of the original jingle from WC3.
I mean when you say that music taste is subjective, followed immediately by declaring that something sounds bad, is mediocre, and asking which part is supposed to be good, it seems like you’re straddling both sides of the fence.
But in regards to your actual point, yes, music taste is subjective. What makes FFXIV’s music so good in my opinion isnt even actually the soundtracks themselves most of the time. Take a theme like Heartless and play it mixed in with some Immediate Music or such and you’d probably not be able to pick it out of the crowd.
The thing that makes FFXIV’s music really stand out is how music is used to enhance storytelling and evoke emotion in a way that WoW has never even attempted.
Like when you fight Deathwing, there’s basically no music worth mentioning playing. You probably couldnt even hear it anyway over all the sound effects of spells and Deathwing shouting at you. Meanwhile when you fight FFXIV’s Big Evil Dragon boss, you get Revenge of the Horde and Freefall in between phases transitions to highlight the tension of fighting for your life against an unimaginably powerful foe intent on destroying you and your friends.
When people say “Oh well the Invincible soundtrack is good” they’re not wrong, but they’re missing the point. Invincible is never actually played in-game, when you’d think it would be the Lich King’s boss theme. Meanwhile in FFXIV when you fight the ancient enemy doomsday weapon while you have a power-up from literal God, you’re hearing the Ultima theme to go along with it.
FFXIV’s themes are emotional and bring the tension and drama of the moment to the fore, as it should be when you’re fighting the big boss. Dark Souls/Elden Ring does it, virtually every single player RPG from Knights of the Old Republic to Skyrim does it, but WoW does not. FFXIV not only does it, they do it best. Thats why FFXIV’s music is incredible.
Hard disagree, have you seen the trailers for FF14? Their small detail to everything is INSANE. Specially yhe darkness partticles in shadowbringers trailer when the WOL kills the forgiven enemy just by throwing darkness at it then he pierced the light open.
To be fair it is 1000% better than it was in ARR. When it was released (near the endgame of ARR) it was HORRENDOUS.
So i’ve heard. This month marks a year i started playing. I first started when they opened the realms back up, because endwalker was so popular.
Off topic but is anyone else looking forward to FFXVI? Interested to see what Yoshi-P can do when he doesn’t have to untangle a massive mess.
