Feedback on Frost vs Unholy Skillcap

I’ll cut to the chase, it’s good info if you want to choose between which spec you want in shadowlands.

Unholy

  • Pet management ( pet stuns, pet leaps, getting your pet to stick on someone. )
  • Death & Decay can be used to make your scourge strikes cleave.
  • Choice between necrotic strikes or scourge strikes to burst or deal stackup pressure
  • Timing your soul reaper to get the execute effect to proc.
  • Keeping track of your stacks of wounds
  • Keeping track of dark transformation, when to use it & when it’s most beneficial when you need the upgraded moves of the pet.
  • Making sure you dot up enough targets to get effective epidemics.
  • Keeping track of targets that have been outbreaked as your abomination can dot up the targets for you so you can save the rune instead.
  • Watching the fiery chains between you and your pet during Unholy Pact.

Frost

  • Line up cds for burst. Rinse & repeat.

Oh &… a few targets are standing together, time to throw a snowball at them! (chillstreak!)

I’m mostly speaking from a pvp perspective, the skill ceiling for frost is just not where it needs to be. My suggestions would be,

  • Give back Presences, Blood/frost/unholy presences to all specs.
  • Give frost soul reaper back, frost used to have it.
  • Frost needs a couple more cds baseline to have depth to the spec, e.g, ICY TOUCH dispels, dark sim, rune tap, somewhere along those lines because they were what 2h frost had baseline! Or just make new abilities and name them with something frosty.
-Frost even had necrotic strikes back in the day, you could choose between necrotic striking the dude or obliterating him out of the world, if unholy can have the choice of choosing scourge strike or necros, frost should too have that choice.

I’ve had this DK & only mained this dk from the beginning of wrath, I’ve seen specs go up and down, frost is definitely not sitting right at the moment in my opinion.

fair points all across until you get to Necrotic strike

As your well aware Scourge strike does not bear anything near the importance of Obliterate when it comes to Frosts dmg vs Unholies which changes dynamics on pressure on and off target.

At the same time Frost vs Unholy is the most unique difference in styles between a class that has the same archetype, there is value in maintaining that. Where as Feral vs Moonkin, Ele vs Enhance are “different” from each other but entirely in the sense one is melee the other ranged.

While i do want to agree with your premise, I also look at the value in frost being entirely front loaded and bursty while Unholy is more methodical. pleasing both sides of the spectrum.

Why do people always feel like specs should be similar difficulty?

The fact that we have two dps specs of different playstyles is a good thing.

If you want a spec with more management and you have more control play unholy.

If you want a spec that’s more straightforward and rng play frost.

I like the fact frost has an easy dps rotation so that i can focus more on all the things happening in pvp like positioning, enemy casts, enemy cooldowns, using defensives etc. Having to soak in all that info while also managing my own dps/pet as unholy is overload for me.

In shadowlands there will be more abilities and keybinds to use than in bfa as well.
