LIFE. I always end up with two vans full of children on a salary of $20,000/year.

Other than that…I like puzzles. Does that count?

I’ve bought and played a lot of board games outside the “usual suspects” over the past couple of years, I’d say my current favorites are…

When I want to play something long:

When I want to play something short/fit multiple rounds:

Other, honorable mentions:

Sagrada
Latice Hawaii
Ticket to Ride
Settlers of Catan
Cryptid
Small World (<-there’s a WoW version of this one)

Unfortunately never heard of those games, i guess i live under a rock

If you happen to have a board game store near you, it’s definitely worth popping in and looking around. Never know what’s going to jump out at you, and there’s a lot of great stuff out there that isn’t Monopoly or LIFE.

Browse, make lists, look up what caught your eye on boardgamegeek.com and read some of their user reviews and subforum posts. That’s how my process usually ends up going.

Settlers of Catan.

It may be a cute little game about resource management, building a colony, and trading. But deep down inside the game is one of the most brutal and cutthroat games that make Monopoly look like hopscotch.

Hero Quest. There are others but this is probably my favorite. It helps that a kickstarter for a new set of it got funded a year or two ago and more expansions are being released for it. Me and my best friend both have the best kickstarter sets and are pre-ordering the expansions when able.

The other board game i really like is fourth edition Talisman with all the expansions.

I also like Warhammer 40k but it’s not a board game but a miniatures wargame.

Hero Quest got a kickstarter re-release. You can still find a newer release of it for an affordable price. Jut don’t expect to ever being being able to get the kick starter exclusive stuff for cheap (yes me and my best friend have the kick starter exclusive content). The kick starter exclusive content, the last time i checked, was going for roughly $1,500.

Spirit Island  I love that game. I always laugh at how it’s just pandemic but reversed, instead of stopping viruses from going out of control and killing everyone, you’re stopping people from going out of control.

My favorite game is called Blood on the Clocktower. It’s a bit like Werewolf/Mafia, or the video game Town of Salem, but 1000x better. I always hated getting eliminated in those games 20 minutes in and needing to wait for an hour while everyone else has fun, but in BotC, dying doesn’t kick you out of the game, all that happens when you die is you lose your ability (which is not revealed). And there’s dozens of different roles in the game with different powers that you can mix up to keep the game fresh. The only downside is you really need at least 8 people to play, but I’ve played it dozens of times and it’s always a blast.

Probably this game called Element. Found it at a PAX many years back. You pull random elemental pieces out of a bag and place them on the board with the intent of trapping the other player. They all behave differently when placed; fire spreading, water flowing, impassable earth, etc. It’s complex but super simple at the same time. Easy to learn and play.

I have a large collection of board games from years back when I used to get together with friends. Two stand out.

Talisman. I have the original game and most of the expansions. Yup. Board game with expansions

Wizards. Very old board game where you play a magical type traveling around a randomly generated board building power to defeat a demon. Nice thing about it, you could play co-op… or be that person that screws over everyone else and takes the win.
