I mean who knows maybe I just have the wrong mindset I use to take rated somewhat seriously and started getting into higher keys and the first priority before anything else was doing all my dailies lmao, maybe this is gonna sound like your typical comment but whats “fun” for me is doing the “harder” content of the game and when thats tied to “Slay 8 Stormwind Troops” it makes it pretty sluggish imo. Maybe this sounds too basic to most people that want account wide essence but, If I wanted to do chores i’d do them irl or play farming/truck simulator.
I 100% agree with most of your reasoning here.
But the point remains, if you want to avoid meaningless grindy tasks that are not fun, BFA as a whole has NOT been the way to go even if playing only one character imo.
Seems like they just keep implementing more and more systems to bog players down inside, with no real carrot reward.
The carrot is a lie!
Ever since they started using a telescopic pole and a bigger carrot, things aren’t actually what they appear to be from a player’s perspective.
It would be nice if essences were an account wide progression system.
I think that this would help players enjoy the benefits a lot more.
If necessary, maybe account wide up to rank 2 and then reasonable requirements to earn the next rank on each toon.
It’s the difference between something that is enjoyable to earn and unlock for many players, and something that feels like an onerous requirement.
I am betting a month before Shadowlands releases they finally give us account wide essences.
Every time I login to an alt and remember it doesn’t have essences I just logout for the day. Blizzard killed alts with the last two content updates. Prior to 8.2 I had 5 characters I did mythic+ on. Some in my guild had every class. Now I only use one character and spend significantly less time in game.
Go farm some essences? You can get enough rank 1 essences to fill every slot for your alt in under 3 hours.
I know it’s silly time gate since everything as far as gearing should be in dungeons, raids and some quests but this essence crap should be account wide.
Rank 1 and 2 are almost worthless if you want to do any challenging content on alts. Plus you already are doing a whole set of dailies for the newest system (cloaks). To reasonably gear alts for things like mythic+ or raiding you have to invest significantly more time than ever before in this game.
My alts are benched because of essences, and the cloak to a degree. If I only have one or two essences then I’m not bothering with that toon anymore. I have neither the time nor the inclination to grind out all these essences a dozen times or more. Just no. Bad system is bad. But hey, on the plus side I have more time to play other games now.
So you want multiple mains then not alts. Gotcha.
I’ve had them every other expansion and for half of this expansion so why not now? I know some players don’t invest in their alts like that I do but essences killed it. They force players into content they don’t want to do just to get those essences needed for content they want. They are time gated like no other systems in the past with no catch-up.
Maybe if the patch content alone was fun to play, the essence grind on alts could or would have been worth it, but we aren’t playing that expansion its from another timeline
Don’t let these guys get you down. You are right. Some will just disagree because they see a point and dont want to acknowledge it.
I have said it before in this forum and I will say it again. When the game was at its peak we had some amazing systems in place, systems that are being asked for to this day to be placed back in the game. Why they do not go back to some of the WotLK systems for gearing I will never know. It really defies logic. Their systems in LK were the best loot systems that I have ever played in any game that is about loot.
Instead they keep creating all these other systems that just compound issues after issue when implemented and leaves a lot of people upset to the point they just quit playing the game.
Keep it simple, stupid. - Michael Scott
It honestly seems like most people’s anti account wide sentiment is based on the “I suffered and you should for every toon you want to play”. Which is terrifying for how bad the system is that people look at it like that.
They have to time-gate so players will GO OUTSIDE
Same company will also time gate you on mobile so that you spend more money to play longer.
Has nothing to do with suffering. My belief and view on mmo’s in general is that progression should be tied to the character not the account. In WoW’s case they have shifted some of these to be accountwide which I don’t necessarily like but hey I live with it and still play. I’ve played MMO’s since Everquest in 1999 and WoW since launch; It’s just what I know and what I like.
It’s nothing against you guys personally; Everyone has wants and needs. The way the systems currently are is just what it is and we have to play what’s infront of us.
And that’s why I don’t play them.
I’ve been playing MMORPGs longer than that and if you remember old school ones correctly you never had things like bind on pickup or equip. You could take awesome gear and throw it on a low level toon making it an awesome toon. I learned to accept not being able to use the same gear on multiple characters when I started playing on launch. You also didn’t have restrictions on crafting tied to one character in old school games. There is a lot that changed with WoW to make things centered on one character and it was slowly getting worse over the years to the culmination we have now.
The question of account progression versus character progression is a legitimate point of disagreement.
Basically, yes, in a more classic RPG design, you are developing, customizing and progressing specific characters.
But WoW has never really offered a lot of options for that, outside of gear, and over the years it has evolved into more of an account-wide game, with lots of collecting (mounts, pets, mogs, etc.) and accumulation of alts.
Many players now want to basically swap classes almost like in a Dota or Overwatch.
I can understand the appeal of both concepts, honestly. I like traditional RPGs a lot. But I think that WoW is really more of an account-wide game now.
Not that certain things shouldn’t be character-specific. Especially features focused on replayability (like the class order halls in Legion).
But something like essences could be account-wide or have an account-wide component, imho.
