It also becomes free during final patch so people interested in the next expac pre-order don’t have to buy the current one, etc

Right, I just don’t remember it ever being done at that point in an expansion.
Maybe they are planning deeper discounts at the normal mark time frame or they are squeezing it in before Blizzcon.

Prices were raised a while ago. Cost a tad too much now, even with discounts.
