Enhancement right now in PvP is one of the most predictable and punishable melee specs in the game, and that’s the core of why it struggles so hard in high-tier arena.
The biggest issue is that all of Enhance’s kill pressure is tied to extremely obvious, telegraphed cooldowns — primarily Doom Winds and Ascendance. There is no real randomness or surprise factor left in the spec. In the past, Enhance had moments of RNG pressure that could force reactions, but now everything is scripted. When an Enhance presses Doom Winds, every experienced player instantly knows: this is the go. There’s no guessing, no pressure buildup, no mind games — just a clear, predictable burst window.
Because of that, countering Enhance is ridiculously easy at higher ratings. You don’t need to outplay it — you just need to hold one button. Disarm alone can completely shut down Doom Winds. When your entire burst window is only 8–10 seconds, losing even 4–5 seconds to a Disarm already kills the go. Then it’s immediately followed by a stun chain — Leg Sweep, Storm Bolt, Kidney, Cheap Shot — and the entire offensive is gone.
It becomes a rinse-repeat situation:
Doom Winds → Disarm → stun → follow-up CC → zero pressureThere is no backup plan. No secondary pressure. No way to recover the go. It’s one of the easiest burst setups in the game to counter, and at high-level arena, players will shut it down every single time.
On top of that, Enhance has no real CC immunity tools to force its damage through. Other melee specs have ways to bypass or ignore CC — things like Lichborne, IBF, or other forms of control resistance — but Enhance has nothing comparable. If you get stopped, you’re just stopped. That’s it.
Mobility is another issue. Outside of specific setups like Ascendance, Enhance has mid-tier mobility at best, making it easy to kite during its already short burst windows. So not only is your damage predictable, it’s also avoidable.
Defensively, the spec is even worse off. Enhance is arguably the squishiest melee in PvP right now. It lacks strong, reliable defensive cooldowns compared to other classes. You don’t have a true immunity, and your survivability tools don’t hold up when being focused in modern arena pacing. When trained, Enhance falls over faster than almost any other melee.
Even talents don’t solve the issue — they actually highlight it more. If you take something like Bulwark, you’re sacrificing elsewhere just to try and survive, and even then it often isn’t enough. Without it, you’re even more exposed. Either way, it feels bad.
Then there’s the design direction of the spec itself. Stormbringer, in particular, has made gameplay feel extremely stale. Instead of dynamic, reactive gameplay, Enhance has been pushed into this “one go every X minutes” style, where you wait for cooldowns, try to force something, and if it fails, you’re back to doing nothing impactful.
Ascendance is the worst example of this:
2-minute cooldown
No cooldown reduction
Pure “all-in” burst window
If it doesn’t work, you’re stuck waiting again. That kind of design is outdated and just not fun, especially in fast-paced PvP where other specs have constant uptime and pressure.
At its core, Enhance right now suffers from:
Over-reliance on short, telegraphed burst windows
No unpredictability or RNG pressure
Extremely easy counterplay (Disarm + CC spam)
Lack of CC immunity tools
Weak survivability
Mid mobility
Outdated cooldown-based design
That’s why it feels like the easiest melee to shut down and one of the easiest to kill.
There are a few clear directions that could fix this:
Make Burrow a permanent/consistent defensive tool instead of a niche pick
Adjust Doom Winds so it isn’t completely countered by Disarm (either baked-in protection or cooldown changes)
Shift Enhance toward higher uptime, consistent pressure, instead of all-in burst windows
Rework talents like Stormbringer so the spec feels active and threatening outside of cooldowns
Right now, Enhance just doesn’t fit into modern PvP design. It’s too predictable, too fragile, and too easy to counter — especially at high rating where players punish every single go perfectly.
love seeing other long ones about the big R words behind this design
I feel like I read 95% of this list 13 years ago in MoP.
Almost like the only things fixed since then were totems being easily countered by getting real health pools and maybe the slight mobility bump. I remember we were excited to finally get Ascendance rather than praying for lava lash crits on top of windfury procs to get something like burst damage.
I point this out to say how pathetic blizz’s design team has been with dps shaman designs and to put perspective on how these have been issues for practically the entire game’s life now. They clearly know fixes since they keep adding classes that seem to steal from our theme’s bag, they’re just maliciously deciding not to do anything at this point
Agree with everything you said. If enhancement shaman isn’t doing big burst damage it ends up just being useless and you do nothing. More so in Midnight now than before. They also nerfed our burst early on in the season (which was necessary) but they didn’t actually give us more consistent damage to make up for it so we just lost damage. They buffed Crash Lightning by 80% but that wasn’t enough since Crash was actually terrible, it still isn’t good and is barely pressed.
Weaknesses of Enhance:
-Lost Totemic Recall so can’t reset totems anymore making us far less disruptive. Can’t reset Grounding or tremor
-Lost Thunderstorm which was the last thing we had to protect ourself while in CC. Nothing else we have is useable in CC defensively so now we have nothing.
-Can’t use our CC immunity (tremor/grounding) in CC. Have to pre use our weak CC immunity but it is also counterable since Tremor is a totem and can die in a global so it may just get no value. Its also not useable in CC so if you dont pre you either waste a trinket or just sit the fear/sleep meanwhile Berserker Roar is useable in CC, warriors got a more user friendly version of Tremor. Grounding Totem is good but lasts 3 seconds and only immunes magic CC, but without being able to reset Grounding/Tremor our CC immunity is much weaker than its been in the past.
-Over reliance on Doom Winds leading to Enhance damage being very easy to counter. 1 min CD, lasts 8 seconds (or 10 with thorims) meanwhile Disarm lasts 5 seconds, so if you don’t trinket the disarm you have to trinket the CC that comes afterwards or you just lose your entire damage cd. Disarm lines up with it so it can just get countered every time.
-Mid mobility. Can get kited pretty easily. Spirit Walk is a 1 minute CD meanwhile Tigers Lust is a 30 second CD and useable on allies, Blessing of Freedom is a 25 second CD and useable on allies. Spirit Walk does nothing that those two do not do, yet its double the CD? If it granted immunity to movement impairing effects for its duration I’d understand, but how is this a 1 minute cd in its current state?
-Worst CC in the game. There is no ranged or melee spec with worse CC aside from maybe Shadow Priest since they lost stuns, but they have 2 instant CCs being Psychic Scream and blanket Silence. Enhance does not have a single instant CC ability aside from Lightning Lasso which we cannot take because it got thrown into honor talents which made it near impossible to pick up. How does a melee spec have less instant CC than every ranged spec in the game btw not to mention every melee spec?
- Why is Hex not replaceable with an instant stun for Enhance or why is there no honor talent that makes Hex work with Raging Maelstrom? Why is there no choice node option to make Cap totem instant in the class tree with a higher stun duration (4 seconds up from 3) so we can choose between lower CD cap totem or making long CD cap totem instant with a longer stun duration?
-Honor talents are rough. The issue is having something like Burrow in our honor talents. Name a single spec in the game that has a defensive as good as Burrow (2 minute CD immunity btw) in their honor talents? Most classes are getting their defensives baseline, ie hunter gets turtle and exhil baseline+gets Wall for free in the class tree, Paladin gets Divine shield baseline, Mage gets Ice block baseline, DK gets AMS baseline, etc. What defensive does Shaman have baseline? None. Move Burrow to the Class Tree and make Astral Shift either free (replace Lava burst/Lava lash with it in the class tree and make those baseline) or baseline, make Burrow useable in CC as well.
- Enhance also has no unique spec specific honor talents at all right now, every single honor talent it has is shared with Ele/Resto which is insane. Give Enhance a good damage honor talent that makes Crash Lightning worth pressing so that we have a damage talent to take that isn’t a risk because it can die in a global (totem of wrath/counterstrike). Give Enhance an honor talent that replaces Hex with an instant stun or makes hex instant with Maelstrom Weapon stacks.
How does Enhance still lack MS while also lacking instant CC/CC in general, has mid mobility, and its utility got nerfed hard and isn’t even unique to enhance as its shared with ele/resto. Survivability is also not great since we can’t use anything in CC and we have no passive damage reduction towards physical dps. Elemental is tankier than Enhance despite being a ranged spec since it uses a shield and has access to farseer making NG better. That is insane.
Give all Shaman specs 2 Ascendance charges and all the problems go away.
If frost mage can be this dumb and untouched, I think that seems fair.
