Emerald Dream review (design)

the zone itself felt… kind of magical.

the first thing I did was just fly around for a bit and there were lots of loops and circle things that were just begging to be dived through.

I found an area with a lot of elite mobs, which reminded me of the western part of the zone in the underground sniffendiggy zone, or the area with wathion and sabellion. It made me wonder why the developers feel the need to force part of a zone to be an elite area? it doesn’t seem to add anything to the experience, it just takes longer to kill those mobs. it’s not very fun.

the random elites are the worst though. they die in just a few seconds and by the time one pops up on my map and I zoom over there, it’s already dead. this is a huge step back. at least in zerth mortis you would have 1 minute to get there before it became active. this is very sad and bad in my opinion.

the smaller blooms are a fun idea but in practice you just have a bunch of players standing around not contributing because nobody wants to have to spend their own currency if they don’t have to. so it just turns into one big game of chicken until someone breaks down and contributes everything themselves to get the bloom to 100%. I think dewdrops collected near the bloom should result in bonus dewdrops flying through the air in an arc towards the bloom and automatically making the bloom bloom more. these would be extra drops and would be scaled up as time goes on to make it easier for less players to complete these later.

superblooms are fun, it would be great if there could be new powerups each week. also I think some of the threats to the tree are a bit too easy. perhaps we could get a ‘heroic superbloom’ that would actually be difficult and have a chance for us to fail, and require healers to heal the tree as well to keep it alive (sort of like zangarmash event?) as currently healers don’t have much to do.

the zone secrets are nice, not overly difficult to complete.

I’ve never seen a quest that requires you to summon a pet, I guess there’s a first for everything.

the gear is all better item level than my current gear, I am not sure if it is worth it to take a higher item level and lose my 4 piece set bonus, the gearing is confusing, I wish the 4 piece set bonus was just disabled automatically at the start of a new season.

it’s a proper zone with lots of questing to do.

I don’t know what to do with the honey hives. I can collect pollen and there’s a flower I can presumably dump it on but nothing happens no matter what I dump the pollen on it seems.

some of the small nuts are floating and can’t be looted (except by a druid in flight form… hehehehe)

I don’t know where the world boss is? apparently they only spawn every 2+ hours or something and also die fast? why? there was nothing wrong with just having a purple world quest and letting players do the world boss anytime they wanted.

the quests are fun.

the lieutenants of fyrakk are total pushovers, they should be far more of a challenge.

the flying fish world quest was very boring

requiring me to /sleep to loot certain things was a nice touch

Lilian and Shandris Feathermoon working together felt out of place, but when I read the backstory for Shandris I thought Blizzard was writing something really compelling. And then it was cheapened somewhat by a spirit inhabiting her. I think it would have just been a better story for no spirit to have been involved and for them to just be dealing with their feelings without any supernatural interference.

Nagrand smashed into Val’Sharah, with a sprinkle of green-colored Ardenweald, imo.

I actually love the floating rocks- they are an homage to the ORIGINAL Emerald Dream, which was before Nagrand even. A leftover relic from Vanilla that never made it in.

I like the vastness of the originals, I actually “did the thing” (creative use of game mechanics) in Deadmines to access it in-game, back in the day.

It was hidden underneath instanced Deadmines, you had to slowfall and do other creative tricks to get there.

I’ve also been to GM Island on live servers, back in Wrath lol.

Don’t ask me how, the GMs said it’s a bannable offense and I’m certain they moved the island as well, lmao.

You can’t go to either of these places anymore, afaik.

From memory, GM island was accessible by gliding off the top of Teldrassil and then glitching your way past fatigue waters. But I think its been removed now.

Yeah, that’s one way lol.

I remember using water-walking and somehow getting past the edge of the map, I think there was a corner that didn’t have a glass wall, and way beyond the fatigue zone.

They did move it, because too many players were interested in getting there.

It was getting too much attention.

Not really content for me. Though I’m glad people are enjoying it.

I don’t care for the asthetic, but I recognize that a lot of people do and this is probably a pretty exciting patch for them.

I like the presentation of the campaign quests with short cutscenes. I don’t care at all for the transmog but I like how much of it is available. Bodes well for the future, at least.

I spent the morning hunting treasures and was pretty fun and rewarding. Pleased to see that knowing what a “burl” is finally came in handy.

Should’ve included new versions of Night Elf forest music, but maybe they’re reserved for when the Tree manifests completely in Azeroth and become a home for the Kaldorei

There’s a delay before they can be attacked, so no.

I like it. It seems slower paced to me which is actually great. I like that it’s not overwhelming me with ‘fluff content’ every second even though of course this content is always going to be fluffy compared to the Mythic+ and raid focus. I know what I’m going to do exactly as I’m doing it… which hasn’t always been in the case in earlier zones that overflooded my brain with too much info and tried to pull me in so many different directions.

Before the devs got in trouble with zones being so over-saturared/too much crap going on, they do something kind of the opposite for once and people still complain lol.

It’s a good zone, idk what people were expecting exactly.

Disappointed.

I feel they missed a massive win with connecting it to the Legion version and making the zone massive. This small land mass was visited once and I’ll never go in again.

Much prefer sunshine and brightest to dark and dreary

I love the Inky Black Potions. They were wonderful in Zereth Mortis too. My only complaint with them is that they replace the sky of the zone too, which is a little sad if said zone has a unique sky.

The dryads are creepy…

The overgrown Faerie Dragons are also creepy…

The pure irony of seeing a Night Elf Demon Hunter say that.

I left darnassus so long ago in pursue of helping Illidan, I never cared for the greens of nature.

Still isn’t as spacious as Teldrassil or Ashenvale, hard to appreciatethe vastness of the trees as everywhere you look it’s busy

Omg the so many trees and gues what we cannot fly thru them what a surprise

Fey dragons look like someone put a costume on their drake for mardi gras. The proportions are all wrong.

I did find the quest where we get a dryad daughter amusing, but it ended too soon. I wanted to have her battleshouting and cleaving skulls with a battleaxe.

Two quests and she’s off to druid college. They grow up so fast.

It feels like this weird in-between for me. I don’t do world content usually, just the campaign for the story then I push m+. No review to offer then, for now. But, I’m a fan of the setting and the story so far seems pretty good.

On my OG Vanilla account (not this account), I got banned trying to get to the OG Emerald Dream LOL. I was obsessed with finding my way in there on live servers…

Anyway, this account I’m posting on now has been my account since Wrath or so. Never going near that level of hidden exploration ever again because, my goodness, not worth losing all that progress

On another note, I love the homages to the OG Emerald Dream in the new zone. Still wish there was a bit more of that “alien” vibe seen in the Verdant Fields with the spinning flowers and that yellowish green hue for the skybox.
