Thank you for explaining that. It makes sense to me now. 
when the op calls themselves an “old fart”, they probably mean “i’m in my 30s”.
…and from what I can see in this thread, people have just gone directly into “hate mode”, instead of taking a bit of time to learn that the UI can do whatever it is they’re complaining that it can’t do.

It’s objective truth. You can do everything you could in the old UI + a ton more customisability. It’s very user-friendly as well.
Every negative of the new UI is just a shortcoming of the old UI that wasn’t fixed e.g. can’t resize/move some elements like the menu bar, can’t anchor tooltip to mouse.
I think the word you’re looking for is hubris.
