Druid + Tanking =?

It’s because the way threat is calculated for Druid abilities is multiplicative.

Maul and Swipe deal threat equal to 175% of the damage.
Dire Bear Form then multiplies that threat by 130% (149.5% with talents).

[Damage] * 1.75 * 1.495 = Threat

By contrast, Warriors generate threat by dealing damage and additional threat built into the abilities.

([Damage] + [Ability Threat]) * 1.495 = Threat
Revenge = 355 threat
Sunder Armor = 260 Threat
Shield Slam = 250 Threat
Shield Bash = 180 Threat
Thunder Clap = 180 Threat
Heroic Strike = 175 Threat

Say you hit for 1200 with Shield Slam.
(1200 + 250) * 1.495 = 2,168 threat

1200 with Maul now.
1200 * 1.75 * 1.495 = 3,140 threat

Let’s say you gear up tremendously, and you start dealing double the damage.
(2400 + 250) * 1.495 = 3,962 threat
2400 * 1.75 * 1.495 = 6,279 threat

As you can see, Druids inherently just deal more threat, and as they receive better gear, they continue to scale higher and higher above Warriors in threat generation.

Obviously there’s other factors to consider. Shield spikes, auto attacks, Revenge, etc, so it’s not like Druids are massively ahead, but Druids are ahead in terms of threat nonetheless.

Druid tanks think they can just turn around when tanking mobs. This is false. Dont do it.

You don’t need thick hide. Get Furor it actually helps in dungeons more than armor

Well, they can more reasonably do so than Warriors, because their mitigation is mostly from armor, not from avoidance.

They still get dazed, of course, which is the real reason not to.

You can get both, though.

Warriors get most of their tanking ability just from Defensive Stance and dps talents help with threat (not as much as Defiance though).

No, stop. Just don’t do it.

I see a druid. It’s time to drop group. Wonder why? You get a terrible tank. Going to be lots of wipes. Make sure to get a warrior.

:-^)

I do fine a druid tank but as you have seen even in this thread there will be people completely against it. Classic has a lot of elitist that demand you play the game a very specific way.
I have pretty much stopped doing any kind of pugging because of this.

Kittens and bear cubs.

They can’t have Gnome Druids because everybody would roll one.

I’ve tanked every dungeon in the game as bear (brd, strat, scholo, u/lbrs dozens of times now)

No issues at all and it’s quite fun managing threat if you’re into tanking.

We’ve also had a bear tank in MC with no issues, in and out of there full clear in two hours regardless of who tanks.

Here’s the thing though, even the elitist will shut up and deal with it after sitting in lfg looking for a tank for 15m.

Out of dozens upon dozens of groups I’ve had exactly one guy kick me for joining as a bear tank. Whispered him “that works both ways” and then put him on ignore right after watching him continue to spam lfg for a tank. I then got a group less than 2 minutes later

Unlike boomkin, the elitist will have zero impact on your ability to find a group. I make 100s of gold every week just chaining dungeons for loot drops.

Despite popular opinion druids are great OTs in raids MT not so much, because they don’t have a way to avoid crushing blows like warriors do, get the right gear and shoot for a warden staff and can easily be an OT in raids.

HAHA your wrong. A bear using 1 charge of a MCP cant be matched by threat of even a DW fury tank war in threat gear. The only time a bear is slightly overshadowed by war is bwl full t2. Phase 1 bears are alot better than warrioirs/ phase 2/3 tryhard druids in R13 will be over armor cap easy. When AQ comes out bears get most of their BIS for the entire game and will be mountain. Druid threat can’t be caught. MCP 1 charge with a swap back to warden staff.

Would not advise this. Forgoing 10% flat damage and OoC is most likely a dps loss compared to the double bear and cat talents you took. I don’t know if you’re more concerned with tanking ability or cat dps but I’d say a dedicated cat is less of a tank than a dedicated bear is a dps.

I have been maining Druids exclusively since vanilla, feral specifically (with a hint of balance from time to time) and decided to tank in classic. I love it and almost ever group I’ve been in I’ve gotten compliments. They’re more than capable in all content. Now to clarify something I saw…

Erroneous. Bears are, almost objectively, better tanks until BWL. They then fall behind starting there because tier 2-2.5 is amazing and obviously bears can’t use the tier sets. Once AQ is in, bears are fantastic again as the feral AP gets implemented and the scaling becomes more even. At end end game, wars usually have to choose between TPS or mitigation. A fully decked out tier warrior has insane mitigation but garbage TPS in comparison and generally switches out pieces. Bears basically get it all. They will always have more health, armor, and threat. Period. Their main draw back is the lack of being crush resistant which is admittedly a thing for sure. Warriors are phenomenal and proven surely, but they in no way overshadow bears in every facet. Certainly not in physical mitigation straight up or threat/damage.

Bear tank can do 95% tanking of every raid boss. Hell i’ve already tanked Ony, and Rag. Nothing hard about this anymore since all the classes are on the AQ Drums of war 1.12.1 and heals aint healing in dungeon sets. Most of the people posting here arent even 60 and claim to be experts. I’m actually clearing these raid bosses as a bear. Don’t listen to the haters.

OP for dungeon spam Druid tank take Improved thorns/ all the bear reduce cost/ rage on crit/ increased dmg on maul swipe and icreased motw. You will be an aggro monster. Improved thorns does alot more Aoe threat than you think. 75% more dmg.

Wrong, bears get one shotted by raid bosses and mechanics.

Not really. No one is demanding you play any way at all. Choosing not to invite an inferior spec is not the same as demanding that player change their spec.

You’re free to play whatever you like; that doesn’t mean you’re going to get invited to every group.

Even the so-called elitists are fine with bear tanks, anyway, as they’re much better tanks than Warriors for dungeons.

No, they won’t. Trust me, no matter how long I’m waiting for a tank, I’ll never invite a Prot Paladin.

Crushing blows are irrelevant when it’s only 150% damage of an attack that hits for 2000 base damage and you have 7k HP and 66% damage reduction from armor.

Shoot the bosses didn’t get the memo that they are supposed to 1 shot me. Someone should tell them.

Druids are fine tanks.
