I don’t even know how there can be a serious discussion if exaggerated lies are being told. It’s okay when one doesn’t really like the style of a game and FF14 actually does have some problems that even their own playerbase recognizes. But when someone starts to make things up or twist the narrative like that, it looks like they’re just hating against it for the sake of… well… being against it.
Then why did I have a guy asking me to go to a market, and introducing about every NPC along the way ?
Like I said, blame the game.
I’m not exagerating, when I saw I was level 7 and had yet to kill a mob, all quests started and ending with chores around town while a guy kept pointing me at fetch and retrieve quests, I was done.
Literally never played a RPG that had such a bland start and I played a lot of Ultima games. Like even Ultima VII, with all its walking and talking, knows to start you off with a good ritualistic murder in a barn to get the juices flowing.
The MSQ guides you in the direction to progress the story, but you don’t have to follow it if you don’t want to. You will eventually have to go back to it to continue the game, but the game does not railroad you into anything after that introduction at the inn.
Oh so now as a new player, I should’ve ignored where the game was pointing me to, because the fun bits were off the beaten path.
Ok, it’s my fault for following the MSQ for 2 hours and being bored out of my mind.
You guys will defend any trite will you ? It’s a bad intro and I bet I’m not the only player they lost to that bad intro.
the grizzly hills music and the howling fjord music still give me chills, including the wrath rendition of a call to arms
the music after legion is really mid asf
Were you not the guy who said not even an hour ago that you think games should be less handholdy? And now you’re telling me that the game should have guided you better? Again, nobody said the early game was perfect. Nobody is defending it. What we’re saying is:
-
You didn’t play it for two hours. The introductory quests are not that long and you certainly kill things well before then.
-
You just chose not to explore after the game set you loose.
Pick a lane, man.
Yes. FF XIV would do good to get rid of that MSQ thing, or at least, cut in some “Ok, freely roam now and don’t come back until you’ve killed a few things”.
The problem is games are handholdy and often not finishing the tutorial doesn’t let you go anywhere.
And thus we try to plow through stupid tutorials.
I did. I read quest texts and I listen to dialog. I’m not a skip Andy.
I was level 7 and had yet to get rid of that stupid guide.
No sorry. Next time have some bandits attack that Caravan instead before even gettingo the Inn. That way at least I’m still on some bit of adrenaline. Lost opportunity, I see no reason to play FF XIV. Even Asmon never managed to finish the 2nd expansion and he’s a skip Andy.
But this is what the game does? You can’t progress the MSQ without being the proper level.
Look at this:
https://ffxiv.consolegameswiki.com/wiki/Seventh_Umbral_Era_Quests
The first MSQ is level 1. The very next one is level 4. MSQs are locked by level, meaning if you are not the level suggested for the quest, you cannot do it.
You will not hit level 4 by doing the very first MSQ alone. You have to do something else. The game didn’t guide you in any direction. It set you loose to go do some things. So I’m not sure I believe anything you say at this point.
Asmongold didn’t skip anything, what are you talking about? He gave extensive reviews about the storylines of ARR and Heavensward, both of which he said were great.
If people are saying WoW story and music is better than ff14, that is an extremely wild opinion. It’s their opinion regardless

HUD UI design / Interface (DRAGONFLIGHT EXCLUSIVELY)
Pre-DF: FFXIV hands down. With DF changes: about equal… though the req. for DBM etc still annoys me. -
Art / Design (armors and zones)
Ah, thats eye of the beholder stuff. I love WoW’s cartoony style but have been a JRPG geek since like…'92 (oof)?
Armours are better imo tho in XIV. Not painted on a la WoW.
- Dungeons and raid design
They do different things. XIV is more about a few boss fights or using dungeons to tell a story (though this may start being very different with the coming update on Tuesday… new dungo scaling hard modes look very interesting).
I really like WoW’s raid design … minus the bosses. The feeling of a super-dungo they give is epic. The bosses I find lackluster.
-
Character models
This is a tough one. I’m leaning WoW simply because Goblins. -
Class design / Talent trees
I much prefer XIV on this. Yeah, yeah, no talent trees, I get it. But the ability to swap to different jobs on a single character is awesome. This matters a lot during prog. When healing for instance, it’s normal to bring a through-put healer and a shield healer. I have White Mage and Sage both 90’d, share most gear and can swap to whatever is needed. Same goes for tanks (do I need a little more DPS in the group? Sweet, Gunbreaker time).
I love the IDEA of class customization in WoW re: talents… but everything is so min-max’d these days (to the point where some builds are required to even be allowed into a group) that it just feels like an illusion of choice rather than an actual choice.
I even pulled up a playthrough from YT to confirm this again. It’s 11 PM here and I don’t have the time anymore to start up the game myself and play the first levels of a new character.
Directly after starting up the game and finishing the intro cutscenes, he was in the city and was introduced to the necessary and important things to get around in the game. And even after he had been taking his time… following the introduction cutscenes and the arrival in the first city directly after that, it took him half an hour to step outside and get into combat for quests.
As I said. It’s fine to dislike some things, but if you have to make things up it’s getting a bit absurd and obvious what you’re trying to do.
You’re welcome!
I also must correct myself, it’s not a 4 man sized only dungeon, it can scale up to 4 players.
So if you wanna solo it you can!

Id avoid the spoilers in your post because a lot of people haven’t played endwalker yet. But I agree that ff14 writing is a lot better
And yet there I was, level 7, in a town asking me to keep doing chores for every npc that involved picking up their trash to selling things to vendors.
It’s cute you think he was watching cutscenes and listening to dialog. His chat was telling him where to go and what to do. He couldn’t even be bothered to read quest text.
You know, I’m not making it up and you insisting I am just proves what everyone says about the FF XIV community : they are incapable of accepting criticism of their game.
Not my fault the game isn’t clear enough that I’m in “free roam” and don’t need to follow the bread crumbs as they are given to me.
Imagine expecting people to watch Youtube guides on how to evade the boredom of the initial questing experience. Not even WoW is that uptight.
So… what, are you telling me that you broke the game and were somehow able to do MSQs below the recommended level? Again, you had to have done something to level up to that point. It’s possible that you stayed in town and did a bunch of side fetch quests, but the game certainly did not guide you to those points of interest. You went there of your own volition.
You’re either lying or you’re just not telling the full story. I don’t know what else to say.
Nah, man. I accept criticism of FFXIV. I just don’t accept nonsense disguised as criticism.
Oh lord, my friend did that too when he started. Got to something ridiculous like level 9 or 10 before realizing he didn’t have to do any yellow quests. But totally fair, early ARR is such a brutal slog…
As for Asmon, he was reading out the quest text as he was playing - did a good review on both the ARR and HW story. That said while he didn’t skip dialogue boxes in ARR… I sure as S–t did. lol.
As for the XIV community and criticism (from outside)… you know what? This is actually true. I think a lot of it stems from being called every name in the book by, ironically, folks like Asmon for years. I’m a total XIV andy but still have about 5 or 6 MAJOR complaints about the game as a whole.
Uh… I watched a lot of Asmongolds FF14 streams and he never skipped anything and he even reads non-voiced dialogue out loudly.
Not at all. I even tried to confirm what you were saying and as I pulled up YouTube videos, there was proof that you just lied. Criticism is fine, but when you’re just lying and making stuff up about the game, that’s no criticism. There are a lot of things one can criticize about the game, but there has to be room for correcting false statements about it.
That’s like saying that WoW raids are boring because every boss is tank and spank and has just one ability and then when you correct them, they say “Oh, you can’t take any criticism of the game”.
Several times it has been even confirmed in this thread, that ARRs storytelling is not everyone’s cup of tea and that it can be a bit boring, especially for people who are not into extremely deep and slow world building. So you don’t have to make sh*t up.
I don’t know dude, I couldn’t even tell you the difference between a side and main story quest. I was a new player.
No, Rudly, you don’t.
Finally someone who actually isn’t gaslighting.
You have videos of me playing the game ?
Funny, I never put up any on Youtube.
You have videos of someone else who probably knew things I didn’t that just didn’t follow the bread crumbs like I did. Again, blaming the new player for not knowing better than what the game presented, instead of the game’s presentation.
No thanks. New World especially looks like a trash game.
I started in Gridania and loved the atmosphere and getting to know the game. It’s addictingly fun at first. The worst part about ARR is that it’s mostly setting up the rest of the game and takes quite a long time to start. Once you get to heavensward, you’ll understand the basics and the story picks up.
Again, if you don’t like ff14 I’d suggest ESO or new world. I think it’s fun to play more MMO’s then just WoW
They even criticized the game themselves a few posts ago, lmao. What are you even talking about. It’s just unreasonable what you’re doing here. As I said - just against it for the sake of being against it.
Come on, don’t get silly now. Now it’s getting childish. I mean videos of random people that are up on YT, not your video. Stop trolling.
