Garrisons was their attempt to answer Wildstar’s housing.
I wouldn’t say housing but some dev definitely played some kind of Harvest Moon game and insisted on personal towns and villagers followers.
It wasn’t housing, their engine doesn’t support it. It wasn’t a coincidence though that they tried garrisons when Wildstar was coming out.
Plots of land with pre-baked buildings that could be upgraded? What it lacked was all the customization, furniture, etc.
It even had profession plots just like Wildstar.
I’ve agreed that they have taken general ideas, but I still wouldn’t call any of those a full copy of some other games idea. This one isn’t similar, it’s a straight copy with very minor tweaks.
It would be less of a problem to me (I want to reiterate this is my opinion) if it wasn’t some main feature of the expansion and was just some little bit of added content. But for me it’s sad that a main feature and one of the primary sources of content is ripped from another game.
That said, GW2 mount systems are great and I’m sure a lot of people who never played it will enjoy this iteration. Doesn’t feel any less wrong to me. Most people complained when every other MMO copied WoW, guess that’s a one-way street.
I cant wait to try DR but I will have to wait because I don’t do PTR, but I wanna see what tricks I can figure out. Mount and toy tricks are my hobby and I fly upside down everywhere I go which I rarely see anyone do, although many have figured out how to “loop”, flying around normally while upside down is keyboard-only, try and use mouse and you will instantly flip right side up. (you can still use mouse for camera movements) And ya you can fly upside down in birdform too.
I pretty much only log into Beta to go do Dragonriding stuff since I got in. So, that’s just not true for everyone.
Someone else posted videos and explanations of how it isn’t.
And MMORPGs take more than just “general ideas.” AoE looting was taken from Rift. Old Republic uses WoW’s old talent design now. The list goes on of straight copies.
Edit: here’s an explanation of how the two GW2 mounts work:
Dragon Riding doesn’t work exactly like either of these. There is a speed button and gain height button in Dragon Riding. The bubbles refill as you go, no stopping involved. Speeding up does not keep you going, it just speeds you up. The direction of your mount and the gain height are what keep you going almost indefinitely. There is no flapping, there is no constant downward glide, etc. The graphics may look similar, but that’s where most of the similarity ends. Those two GW2 mounts have very specific mechanics that aren’t exactly like Dragon Riding. Similar? Somewhat. Blatant ripoff? No.
This is Dragon Riding:
I doubt there’s a patent for GW2’s flying system.
A TON, lol.
Im hoping that all our dragon mounts with the same models will just work for DRing.
If so, thats going to cover a lot more of our collection real quick.
And the abject stupidity therein is that its all the same at the end of the day.
Flight requires lift lmao…so ANYTHING that glides or flies requires that ONE thing…lift.
Lift pushes the mount/vehicle UP.
So isnt it a ‘blatant ripoff’ to have lift for our mounted flight by the joke complaints in here?
QUESTING existed in games LONG before WoW was created.
I guess by the joke complaints here that WoW must have stolen that concept too. lmao.
And dragons. good god, theyre mentioned in the bible, lmao. So I guess WoW stole the concept of dragons from the Jesus book, L M A O.
I complain when the game breaks my stuff or Ion takes it for no good reason.
something valid.
Whining because flight / gliding is similar to some other game is just juvenile and pointless.
I’ve played GW2 extensively and have these mounts (along with a few useless legendaries including Astralaria which I never use). Dragonriding is incredibly similar to the Griffon. You cannot tell me they didn’t pull this idea from GW2.
They have made it more forgiving to use (and obtain, hopefully) compared to GW2. But nobody will ever convince me that Blizzard didn’t take this entire idea from GW2. This was noticed by anyone who played GW2 in the very first video clips of Dragonriding, tons of people called it out.
I’m not sure why people are getting defensive over it, we have all agreed that all games mimic certain aspects of others, and I’ve said multiple times that I enjoy the mount system from GW2.
My only point and problem with it, is that it’s a major feature of the expansion, and it was taken from another game. They had all this time and the largest amount of resources of any MMO developer to create something unique, and they took the easy way.
They couldn’t even be bothered to create a class usable by more than one race because they are too lazy/cheap to make animations for other races. No excuse in my book other than they will continue to push the limits of how little they can get away with while still raking in cash.
I’m not some doom and gloomer, I’ll still play the game and enjoy it. Gold is too easy to make, tokens are basically free!
Who is whining?
Tbh, i’m kind of struggling to find what is worth being excited for to begin with.
And i’m not talking about “Fun” as everybody likes to use this, not realizing it’s a subjective term. I’m yet to see any actual use for it other then just going really fast.
Well you know what they say about fun being subjective.
Hey man if you want a painful experience there’s other places for it lol
That’s pretty biased to describe old flying and Dragon riding as that, since it’s not exactly painful for old flying. People can and have enjoyed old flying. Why can’t both of those things exist to cater to both for the fun they provide then, if the goal here is to increase the fun?
I just meant comparing old vs new and how a old thing will eventually start to break down.
Newer coasters have better safety precautions. Old ones? Not so much
I bet everyone ends up hating dragon riding.
…Well were not talking about roller coasters.
Odd that you bring up the possibly of breaking down, because… well typically the more complex something is, the more likely something will break and will break the whole contraption if you’re unlucky. New and/or Old.
I yet to experience New Flying, so i can’t say it’s worse or better, though i yet to see the ultity of what this brings and how it fits into WoW to see if it fits into what i find fun, subjectively speaking. But Old flying for me fits my fun quite nicely. Yes, it’s simplistic, but it works well enough.
Well I said its a comparison. The older stuff one bad run and you’re just “Ugh god I need some advil and a bed”
The newer ones since you’re not getting all banged up you’re bound to go again and have more fun
I know, i just simply don’t see it as such.
The only time i will say that is whenever i have a massive headache coming on from pretty much anything. Motrin and YouTube does wonders.
Similar is NOT exactly nor blatant rip off.
