Dragon Isles theorycrafting and related lore

Dragon expansion with “multiverse” or “timelines” theme on the background.

Antagonists:

  • Infinite Chromie
  • Murozond
  • Corrupted Wrathion heralding the Void God expansion.

And the night elves’ mythology believed Elune lived inside the Well of Eternity. They were wrong.

A being’s understanding of what it is, is not remotely the same thing as a bunch of mortals trying to rationalize the origin of a world and universe that they weren’t around to witness being made.

Just because you want it to be true, doesn’t mean that it is.

It does matter because the titans - and Azeroth being one - are intrinsically involved in the historical development of the WarCraft universe. The First Ones are a bit, fat nothing. Literally their entire relevance is located in their name, while as a titan Azeroth carries a longstanding connection to the cosmology that’s been built, tied to the Pantheon, the Burning Legion, the Old Gods/Void Lords, and her eventual role when she someday awakens.

A random “turns out she’s this blank slate ‘thing’ that has no true story connection to any of that” development would be a multitude of gigantic detrimental steps backward from what’s been built. The First Ones shouldn’t even exist at all; lacking that, they 100% shouldn’t still actively exist in the universe. They should be some tier of incomprehensible beings who sacrificed their power and existence to kick-start the universe; having them still be around would just add one more soulless layer of cosmic power that lacks any connection or justification to care about them. Like a bunch of next-level Zovaals.

And there was a time when the Titans were the same.

Just because it wasn’t written before, doesn’t mean that a good compelling story cannot be written for them now.

Zovaal could have been an interesting character, but he was rushed and forced to make sense due to time.

According to legend, Aman’Thul was the first titan to wake from his slumber, although no one knew how or why the first titan woke.

** The whole Warcraft universe was built on an unknown. **

In terms of Azeroth, her story almost doesn’t change at all, and arguably becomes more true to Tauren Mythology if she is a “First One” or the lingering presence of the First Ones.

While traveling through the Great Dark Beyond, Aggarmar heard the tranquil dreams of the most powerful world-soul he had ever encountered.

A world soul is nothing more than that, a soul. Where does it state Azeroth is a Titan of Order? Where does any titan call Azeroth sister?

Dude… no. A fake leak is not indicative of anything being worked on, that’s something someone created to get attention and shouldn’t be taken seriously. It was obvious Shadowlands was going to be the next expansion because of the foreshadowing that was put in BFA, it was the logical step. Someone made a fake Nazjatar expansion awhile back that included Kul Tiras and Zandalar but that’s not proof of Blizzard having been working on BFA.

They should bring in Chromantus as one of the antagonists. Technology has advanced since Cata (eg, look at Ghidorah in the 2019 film), plus he’d fit the theme and having the powers of all the aspects, being loyal to Deathwing and nigh-unkillable would be a great thing for a Dragon Isles expansion.

Side note: he needs a lot of arcane magic to be woken up. Now who do we know who has a lot of arcane magic as a powerful mage, has similar past affiliations as Deathwing AND has a grudge against the heroes of Azeroth? hmmm…

‘Dragon Isles’ sounds boring as a concept and no amount of driving up old dead dragons from past expansions/books is going to make it less so.

I’d rather they put in the ground work (and I mean really put in the ground work, not just retcon it in) for a new antagonist and a new conflict.

I predicted a Dragon Isles Expansion back in Legion.

I wish I was right.

Why would Azshara have a grudge against the heroes of Azeroth?

Everything she has done has been in her own self interest and the Burning Legion/N’zoth were the ones to screw her over more so than us.

In fact, we even freed her from Ny’lotha…

What do you think of the Netherwing Dragons and what their interactions or conflictions with Wrathion could be?

Could Draenor have an untainted Blackdragon egg? Maybe a female counterpart for Wrathion?

Two years after the end of the Second War, the black dragon Deathwing traveled through the Dark Portal to Draenor. Believing the world to be a relatively safe haven for his offspring, he secreted away a number of black dragon eggs before he returned to Azeroth. When Ner’zhul recklessly opened multiple new portals on Draenor, the magical stress tore the planet apart. The energies released in this catastrophe altered Deathwing’s eggs, resulting in the nether drakes: ethereal dragons whose bodies are composed of energies from the Twisting Nether. Without Deathwing’s guidance, these otherworldly nether drakes are just now finding their own way among the blasted ruins of Outland.

My thoughts are that I do not want an expansion centered around the Dragon Isles. If the Dragon Isles are a zone we go to, that’s fine. But I don’t want another land mass popping up off the cost of EK. It looks very cluttered already.

I’d really rather see an updated world like Cataclysm again. Cata zones are way older now than the vanilla zones were when they revamped them. Create new storylines to explore, new characters, etc.

And don’t just populate the zones with more cataclysm style quests. I’d prefer fewer but more high quality quests than just a hundred different collect x or kill x quests with le funny meme names.

I think the Netherwing are a bit out of the way to receive much attention from other dragons. They also seem amicable enough that few would have reason to oppose their existence. I think a distinction between the five dragonflights and offshoots might pose an interesting narrative, though. For instance, if the infertility affects only the original five, that might leave the Netherwing to continue thriving as a species.

In which case Wrathion, with his savior/god complex personality, might take an interest in the former black dragons’ ability to reproduce. And I don’t know if they’d take kindly to being treated like Nefarian lab experiments, so there’s definitely possibility for conflict if Wrathion went with that route.

There’s also the existence of Sabellion in Blade’s Edge who might oppose Wrathion “muscling in on his turf”. Heck, seeing Sabellion making some moves on Outland would be cool, too. The parallel between Blackrock Mountain and Blackrock Foundry could be explored with Sabellion moving into the remains of the old Blackrock ancestral home, recently uncovered in a slab of what used to be Gorgrond.

As for the possibility of another uncorrupted sibling arising from Outland, I think it’s very possible. I like to headcanon that the black dragonflights suffered mostly from Old God whispers on Azeroth, so they’d be surprisingly safe on Outland from it. And with N’zoth, the last Old God, being destroyed, they could probably go to Azeroth safely and begin a story there.

We also foiled her plans to take over the black empire by defeating her thanks to Jaina and Thalyssra trapping the Naga Queen with her own anti teleport spell.

That was referring to Azshara using the Heart of Azeroth to overwrite the locking mechanism on N’zoths prison. And you know that.

Considering Azshara quotes the line in the fight.

Could you see Sabellion having a more… I guess, rightful claim to the Throne of Deathwing?

If the dragon isles were discovered, could he not come back from a dying planet to essentially claim what he believes is his…

I’m not sure if Sabellian (apparently I was misspelling his name earlier lol) has expressed more ambition beyond Outland so far. Granted black dragons seem to have a naturally grand ambition so he could make some plays. But it would depend on what “Deathwing’s throne” would be. The title of aspect, leadership of the dragonflights, or claiming the legacy and territories left behind by him and his cohorts?

I could see him expressing interest in carrying on the black dragonflights but under his own vision. And Wrathion might not appreciate that. I get the vibe Wrathion is a big fish in a little pond and has had little real competition within the black dragonflights. Could be interesting to see a more experienced dragon step up to bat against him.

Because we keep attacking the Naga who are carrying out her plans and killed/defeated them ever since from Vanilla to BfA before patch 8.2.

Because some of us work with the characters who thwarted her plans in the War of the Ancients, such as Malfurion and Tyrande.

Because she hates non-Highborne to the point of wanting them dead because they’re “unworthy of living” in her eyes; one of two reasons she signed on with the Burning Legion.

Because some of us made rude emotes at her or flirt emotes at her in the Eternal Palace! (and also beat her up, stole some of her trinkets, killed some of her best servants and ruined her “overthrow N’Zoth plan”).

We know this to be true (at the time of TBC) as there are several black dragon nests in Blades Edge. One of the dragons with one of those nests appeared later in Cata and we killed her. She had a title implying that she was one of the last Broodmothers of the Black Dragonflight.
